Title: TSI ENGINES

Hi all,

Been a while. Im looking into getting back into a golf. What are these TSI engines like? Lot of mix reviews flying around.

Preferbally the 1.4tsi 160bhp spec is what im looking at. Anything i should look out for etc?

Any info would be a great help.

It would be a golf mk6 shape i would be able to afford, mk7 is a bit out of my reach

If it's the 1.4 twin charged tsi engine avoid like the plague, wholly unreliable engine, drinks oil.
Bought the Mrs a golf with that engine broke down in excess of five times in a year and we ended up getting rid of it

Yup i have read some bad reviews for that engine. Its a shame on paper its a good car.

Im leaning more towers a audi 1.8 tfsi or golf gtd 170bhp spec.. So its between them two now..

post 2011 1.4 TSI engines were a bit more reliable than earlier versions but they're still a bit of a dog. I've now lost count of how many rebuilds/piston replacements/timing chain failures we've had to do. At one point it was a couple a week.
The 1.8TFSI Audi will actually be a TSI chain driven lump which unfortunately also suffers with the piston/ring oil consumption problems. One of our staff cars has that engine and it drinks a litre of oil every 300 miles.
The later common rail 170 tdis are pretty good though as long as you steer clear of cheap remaps and cheap fuel, I have that engine in my Tiguan. Turbo actuator failures are quite common but I could sort that for you, I'm sure you still qualify for "mates rates" :grin: ... just avoid the PD 170 (up to mid 2008) they were never the greatest engines and now they're a few years old we see quite a few simple-ish but fairly expensive problems with them.. inlet manifolds are prone to leaking.. £££££!!

How you doing chris! Long time man.. Yh only thing is.. Im not keen on diesels but i do quite bit miles for work now so needs must :-(...looking for a 2011-2012 plate... Lot these new dubs have some weak engines..makes it hard to choose...

Glad to see you still about man :-)

I defo need get back into a vw or audi driving a ford at the moment! Lol

Looks like a GTD may be the way to go then ;-)

Also is the dsg box ok on them?
