I thinks it’s more about the kind of driver they think is involved. I bet statistics show that “cars” with modified wheels have more accidents. And….they might be right on the basis of what I see flying round the town centre on a Saturday night.

And now my insurer wants a 20% loading if I switch wheels.

Maybe I will live with the Parkers. One needs refurb so that will relieve me of £120. Deep joy!

Don't be a tightwad, £120 refurb is less than two tanks of fuel

If you are keeping the car I'd go to Lepsons, if you are not keeping it longer than a year or two at a push, get the £120 refurb.

what about a used set of genuine prets off ebay?  If you pick up a cheap set with few scuffs you can get them refurbed?  Or just wait for an immaculate set

Would the insurance increase if you swapped to the older Austin wheels? Saving you about 1Kg

I expect it would still load the premium but would anyone notice in event of a post-accident inspection? I suspect not.

I think my passion for Prets has started to burn out and maybe I will opt for the simple solution of keeping the car original. Less hassle all round.

Next spring I’m going to get my Parker’s powder coated when I can find someone local ish that can do the black and silver. Like you, I like the OEM straight out of the factory look.

By coincidence I saw a red 7.5 today (a bit scruffy tbh) with Parkers that had been painted or powder coated a uniform mid-grey. No black inserts. Just overall grey.
Memo to self : NEVER do this!!!

IMHO OEM diamond cut alloys with wide spokes such as mk7 GTI’s Austins and mk7.5 GTI’s Parkers don’t look great when refurbished in a single colour; the wide spokes make them look very heavy. Just my opinion though, and no offence intended to anyone who’s had their Austin or Parker alloys powder coated in a single colour.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember the OEM standard alloys on the mk7 GTI in Germany was a silver powder coated version of the Austins. I think may have been 17” rather than 18” and were possibly called Brooklyn rather than Austin, and they were also sold in some markets as winter wheels.
