Thanks for that and I am sure what you say is all excellent info but it’s way over my head I am afraid!!
I am not into coding and diagnostic stuff so wouldn’t know where to start.
I will try main dealer first and see if any of the old faces are still there from when I bought my mk5.

Check this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEMRIPjeJAs  Lots of good info including a quality third party stalk to buy. I fitted this to mine and it's been working like a charm. I used OBDeleven to do the coding.

Note, though, I had to pull a LOT harder on my airbag to get it to release. It's not only held in by the metal clips that you need the mirror to see, it's also held in from the back by push-fit plastic clips. I really had to pull harder than I thought was sensible, but eventually it did come out.
