1.8GTI Turbo or 2.3 V5?
« on: 24 July 2003, 23:55 »
Hi all,

I'm considering buying a 3yr old 2.3 V5 ?9,995 22K miles.  Would I be better off with a 1.8GTI Turbo?

Which one is more fun?

Grateful for any advice.

The V5 is smoother but i've heard its quite a bit heavier on fuel, and they get a little smokey with age. the engines as far as i've heard, dont have that vw 'engine gets better with age' tradition.

Agre with Pimpster, V5 is a lazy cruiser whereas a 1.8T is a lot more racy.

The new golf 1.8T with 180bhp is quicker tha nthe V5, but it costs more than ?10k of course.

See if you can stretch to one.

Just got a 1.8T (180bhp) , feels alot quicker than the Pug 106Gti i used to have. Now it's got 18"s Milles Evo 5 & a drop of 30mm with Eibach's springs, Lexus rear lights looks like the mute's nuts now. Get the 1.8T (180) you won't regret it.

Well my Audi has the 2.3 20V 5 cylinder engine and there is no doubt about it, it will whip my cabrio! It just isn't very responsive in first gear up to 4000 rpm, but once it achieves 4000rpm its like a rocket. Really good for motorway driving/overtaking etc., but the Golf is more fun as it has that 'scaletrix' feel with the accelerator.....if you know what I mean?

golfvr6 you're wrong. You can get the 180bhp golf now as standard and its not an anniversary cos i just bought one! Got it in May this year. 0 - 60 in about 7.5  seconds. Thats good enough for me, for now anyway!

VW hasn't advertised it much, but you can see it now in their price lists!

I think it's about a grand cheaper than the anniversary, but i bit more than the other 150bhp.

With a REVO mod on it, you can get it up to between 210 and 220 bhp! All that for another 400 squids.

The v5 should be good, not that much smaller than my vr6. Same 15 degree V engine.
