Back to a GTI
« on: 20 June 2003, 11:40 »
Hi all. I am returning to MK1 GTI ownership (albeit a cabrio) after a gap of 10 years. My last one was a Mars Red '82 1600 'XLF540X' which is now a concours car.
I always regreted selling this car and now finally I'm in the position to get another. I found a one owner '84 GTI cabrio with just 44,000 miles on the clock thats been dry stored for the last 4 years. Just waiting for the current owner to get it MOT'd before I part with the rest of the cash.  ;D

Nice one.........how much are you looking at paying for it?

I'm looking into insuring mine with 'footman james' at the moment. I got, what I think, is a really good quote; ?118.65, fully comp but with mileage limited to 1500, although that may be increased depending on usage.......but I only plan to take it to shows and out on nice sunny days. For 6 months, over the winter period it goes back into storage.
They want to agree a value for the car and at the moment we are looking at ?1500. Does that sound about right, too much or not enough?

Sounds a bit low to me Richard. I'm paying ?1750 for mine and thought I was getting a bargain. After looking round at what is for sale I reckon it should be worth at least ?2500 if it's in good nick.
Mine will be a daily driver, insurance is ?360 fully comp. My Beetle is insured with Footman James with an agreed value of ?2500, 1500 miles limit for ?77.
I see you have a Coupe too. I had a J plate 2.3E auto a year ago, nice car, but a bit sluggish and very thirsty.

Hmmm, thanks for that, I think I might have to give them a call and review our figures. Not looking to put it on the road until July so I still have a bit of time to sort it out.

As for the Audi, it is very thirsty I agree. Up to 4000 rpm it feels sluggish but once you hit 4K it takes off and goes very well. Mine has been chipped and has a straight through exhaust which I found made a difference to the lower end torque.

My coupe was a 10 valve, so would be very sluggish compared to your 20 valve.
Good surname by the way  ;)

This is too spooky I've had my rag top for a couple of years now but I also had a MK1 GTi ten years ago, Black 1600 YLR 106X. And we share the same name!!

Excellent!! I don't suppose you've got a Beetle too? I've got a '72 1300 which I have now owned twice since 1987  8)
I'm finally picking the Golf up tonight. After 4 years storage it needed a new exhaust, fuel tank filter and 2 tyres. Not bad, I bet any other make would have seized up  ;D

No I don't own a beetle. I'm glad though because that would have been getting a little too wierd. Keep getting tempted with a camper, however storing too many cars is getting to be an issue (maybe when I've moved house!!).

My daily driver is a 95 pug306xsi, though I love VW's dearly I've had the pug for 6 years now, it's a fantastic drive(not lightning quick by any standard) and it's just been too good to me.

How's the Golf going now you've had it a couple of weeks?

After a few teething problems, mainly due to the car being laid-up for 4 years, she is running pretty nicely. Took her down to Suffolk for the weekend, 200 miles and had no problems at all. I filled up with Optimax for the trip and stuck in a bottle of Slick-50 injector cleaner for good measure which seems to have cured the slight hesitation under acceleration.
Next job is to replace the front springs as the previous owner had one replaced by a "VW-Audi Specialist" in Somerset and they have used a GTI hatch spring which is 20mm lower than the cabrio, hence the slightly strange angle of the front end  :-\
