Title: 17 inch alloys

can i fit 17s straight on to my mk1 golf clipper?

You can but it would be better to go slightly smaller better fit and smaller

I think they are going to catch the arches, depending how much they catch, you will need to grind the inside of the plastic back a bit or have the metal properly 'rolled'.

One of my mates has got 17's on his mk1 they catch and he has had his arches rolled

ive spoke to someone with a 1991 gti and his 17s dont rub his arches.are some lower than others?

Depends how much you want to lower it by.  You dont want to get alloys and then leave it at standard hight it would look like a 4X4 and you dont want that.  The best thing to do is lower it first and then have a look at wheels after, then you will be able to judge the size you want.  The car will handle alot better if you lower it and then put on a reasonable size wheel.  The wheels will look biger if you lower it as well so 15s will look very good
