hi, Has anyone chipped a vr6 or similar??? Anyone with any experience in this field??? which ones to go for etc

It was a couple of years ago, but whilst studing for my degree, me and a friend had a pissed up idea to put a VR6 in a Mk2 and supercharged it. It was DAMN quick. But didn't handle, even though we spent a fortune on the suspension......... anyway i digress.

 We tried using the rather obvious choice of superchips, which were fine for the type of things you are probably after, (Standard engine?). But we found that because of the stupid amounts of power the thing could produce, we went for a complete Lumenition management system with trottle bodies, injectors, the lot  funded, rather kindly, by the University. (Nice!).

These are damn expensive, (at the time it was around ?3500) but were brilliant. you could map every thing from a laptop, and spend hours, if not years messing around with every conceiveable aspect of fuelling and ignition timing. Hell we got the thing up to 296BHP on the test bed before we fitted it to the Mk2, It could have taken more, but considering if we blew it, we had to get a new one with our own cash, decided against it. so we  down tuned it to a nice round 220 for the road. Happy days.

Yeah it was a good course, 'Automotive Engineering/Engine design' University of Hertfordshire.

 Not sure if they still do it now, (we are talking '95-'98).

I have got all the test bed results here, as i used the VR6 on the test bed for my 2nd year project. The Mk2 we put it in was owned by my flat mate who was on the same course, (Looked like a standard black 8V GTI, steel wheels Normal looking exhaust etc, just a bit lower and damn quick). I keep meaning to get hold of him to see what he did with it after he wrapped it round a tree in the autumn of '98. I know he has some pics and i when i get hold of him, i will attempt to post them, mainly ones of us two pissed up breaking a bottle of stella on the bumper to Christen it (we were students, couldn't afford champangne!).

I went to that uni '94-'98 at the campus in Hertford - you must have been in Hatfield tho'.... happy days  

So the uni funded all that 'work' and then let your mate keep it?

We Had to convince the uni that we needed the VR6 for the work we wanted to do i.e supercharging, the Uni's only V6 at the time was an ageing V6 ford unit, OHV, antique. So they ended up getting 3 VR6 units of Shell. These engines has done 25,000 hours on there test beds in Ellesmere Port so were already quite run in and had been stripped and rebuilt countless time prior to coming to us. All were supplied in various states. the one we were given was bare, no manifolds, engine management, just the short block. The other two were running so these were kept by the Uni.

We had to basically bribe the department for them to let us have the engine for ?500. A bloody fortune, they funded the engine mangement as long as they could have it back at the end. but my mate a bit of a rich kid and as a 21st birday present convinced his parents to buy the whole damn lot off them. For the asking price of ?3500.

Cheap considering.

As he had paid for it, he of course done the honerable thing of sticking it in his Mk2. We both did it over the summer of '98 back here in Wales.

Hey dude IM SUPERCHIPED THANKS ALOT....That degree course sounds a mazes in .  I know this not a ucca and pcas but did get a good engineering job after ...I want some course like that one ..........CHeeRS mate.......
