Scrolling down this page is like watching a Golf2 descend into hell.

£10 says your accident was caused by your front end being a million miles out of alignment thus your car had no grip.

The whole thing is just  and the harnesses are   in particular.

not to sure on your Relentless oil breather?

Martin as if u have a thread. Good work. And uve ordered your spacerplates for you harnesses now. Its all going good. Did u have it all alighned at the front?
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 23 December 2010, 14:37
relntless can wasnt supposed to be permenent it was a quick fix so it didnt suck the gas from the breather into the cabin,it vents underneath the car.
coilovers were setup ok,not perfect i admit but it still griped better than when it was standard, accident was caused by a spill on the corner,i could still see the rainbow effect on the road as it was damp.
ultimatly it was caused by speed because i didnt allow for the spill and didnt expect it to be there.
lemski will say how well it grips normally
the plates for my harnesses have arrived today and will be fitted asap.

Not really a fan tbh  :undecided:

I think the rear end is too low, I don't like the seats or chequers (or any of the stickers for that matter), I think the dice look silly, the rear lights are chavy and the wheels are aweful

That said each to their own, the world would be a very boring place if everyone was the same! As long as you like the car and are enjoying yourself with it that's all that matters :afro:
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 23 December 2010, 16:55
im not sure about the lights either and im changing the wheels soon anyway(thay were painted like that to cover up the rust and only on the car because i couldnt afford tyres for the alloys)

Would be nice completely standard lowered on them RA style wheels, everything else in my eyes looks like it's trying too hard to be 'original' but just looks awful :undecided: seats and lights just look chavvy. But looks like a good base shell :) could be nice.

i get bored far too easily to have a standard car low on alloys.
i like trying something,if i like it it stays if not then it go`s

Does 'set up OK' feature any actual time on a ramp with some alignment kit?

Give the angle of your lower control arms it gripped no better than it would have done out of the box, it just would have felt that way, but because you'd moved the roll-centre below ground level it will let go earlier and with far less warning.

the plates for my harnesses have arrived today and will be fitted asap.

Will the plates move the harness securing bolts to somewhere else that isn't presumably the rear seatbelt mounts?  In an accident those POS harnesses will probably snap one of your collarbones as they're pathetically narrow and as the force increases they'll pull you down in your seat, compressing your spine and as you slide down as you don't have a crutch strap it'll do further damage to your spine as you submarine out of them.

Dumb f*ck modification and dangerous, too.
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 23 December 2010, 22:56
no it didnt have time on a ramp,it was set as close as possible by measuring various gaps between parts, so like i said it wasnt perfect but it was close.
the plates are to strengthen the mounting points to fia standards, but no it wont move them from the rear seat belt points,i know they are thin and i tried to find a set that were wider but most harnesses are the same width and they do conform to track standards,i also know about the compression injury in a crash but i cannot find a harness bar that could be fitted without a cage and i cannot afford a cage yet.however i am looking for a cheap full cage (has to be a full cage as the half cages in the rear arn`t very good)if anyone knows of one.

What utter tosh.

No, your harnesses don't conform to 'track standards'.  Go read the Blue Book - the angle of the shoulder straps is on or just over 45 degrees.

Why anyone outside of a 4x4 trialer would buy 2" belts is beyond me - can you not see they're significantly narrower than the standard belts, numpty?

If you can't do it properly, don't do it - your 3-point belt will be much safer.

Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 24 December 2010, 11:59
again like i said the suspension was close not perfect if i had it set up with alignment equipment it would have been perfect.but it was alot closer than just bolting it on and hoping for the best.
i also said the harnesses themselves are fia approved not how they were mounted.

Blimey: you've soaked up a fair bit of abuse on this thread with very good grace: well done! You are a Gentleman Sir!

Cars are a personal thing and good for you for building it how you want it: it's your car after all.

For what it's worth, I like to see the sort of cosmetic custom mods you're trying out. I hear what others are saying about safety but it could have been said in a friendlier way.

Long live The Beast!

Very good to see that you have set up a build thread, nice to see how much work you actually put in to it. Everyone has their own prefs as to what mk2's should look like and i like yours, like it was said before if all of us where rolling around in the same it would be boring.
Nice to see DH is back to his old ways of giving good advise in his own way

Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing it at the next meet.

i should be able to make the meet aslong as nothing comes up
i dont think my car wanted to go to the last one.i snapped a cv a few days before.and the other side went a couple of days later  all good now, just need to replace an inner cv boot and paint a few bits under the car before it starts corroding.
im also looking at bike carbs and a gti cam so it might get an upgrade soon

Do you know what you are on with with the bike carb conversion? A mate of mine is a bike mechanic and he was talking about doing a conversion on mine. I'm not doing it but he knows his stuff and his dad has a bike shop so he has access to cheap parts. Might be worth a chat- he's a local boy

Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast

yeah but that means messing about rejetting the carbs and seting the fuel pressure only to take them back off
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast

I suppose but we can rejet the new carbs and bolt up and fuelpressure isn't hard to set. Just getting the mixture right

Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: Diamond Hell on 28 December 2010, 23:01
For the driver you really need a crossflow head, to put the carbs out the front, away from the heat of the exhaust.

2.0 Passats and Sharans are willing and cheap donors, although you'll need to get an oil return welded up/blocked off.
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 28 December 2010, 23:06
im going to make up an airbox for them that will encase the carbs and seal against the bonnet, then have a cold air feed from the hole in the inner wing
.im also thinking of adding in the standard hot air flap to help with cold running but i dont know if it will work
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: Diamond Hell on 29 December 2010, 16:29
And never mind the heat from the exhaust manifold?

Not sure you've fully thought this through....

Not sure you've fully though this through....

Or even thought it about it.
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 29 December 2010, 19:39
i would have thought boxing the carbs in would have reduced the heat alot.and with the constant cold air flowing into the carbs i wouldnt have thought it would have time to heat up before being sucked into the engine.
i want to avoid taking the head off if possible as it wil add more time and expense to the setup.
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: Diamond Hell on 29 December 2010, 20:38
Then you're fooling yourself, as you'll gain probably 15% flow with a crossflow head, given the bigger valves and simply better flow across the head instead of in, turn 180, and out again.

And the most important thing that you need to make any bike-carb-based stupidity even begin to work is flow, thus you really need to focus on improving the flow - bike carbs are one third, the head and cam the second third and the tubular manifold with a high-flow exhaust you are fitting is the last third.  You are fitting a tubular manifold, aren't you?

Plus with the crossflow you'll lose the heatsoak from the carbs being over the exhaust manifold, which is likely to deliver vapour-lock in traffic conditions, which will be funny.

Plus you'll be able to increase the manifold runner length, which will strengthen the torque curve, lower down allowing you to actually race to the red-line instead of bogging down in the mid-range.

After all, taking the head off an engine is a terribly complex job, which few people have under-taken successfully - far more complex than a quad-carb conversion....

Post by: mk2 helper on 29 December 2010, 20:49
love it martin i fink ur cars well smart and we just need to get them new wheels on her then it'l be sorted m8 and the bike carb set up will work fine with ur air box idea and with a good exhaust manifold that's heat wrapped u'l get away with it on traffic when ur standing still aslong as u leave the bottom of the air box bair shiney metal so it reflects the heat and hve a good cold air feed wich u do have.
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 29 December 2010, 22:06
i already have some exhaust wrap for it,and the carbs will be fully enclosed when the bonnet is shut.also with the carbs constantly drawing air in there will be a flow of cold air inside the box to keep the tempratures down, so i dont think that will be a problem but we will see.if it doesnt work i can change it.
i am trying too find a manifold but i want to keep expense to a minimum so im really looking at second hand parts.
the conversion wont be undertaken for a while anyway so it will give me time to sorce parts
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: mk2 helper on 29 December 2010, 22:11
oh nyc 1 m8 plenty of time 4 thinking and we need 2 get that spare manifold off ur old engine hav a look at what we can do to it... and its worth investing in a stainless manifold 'if therz any cheap flying about' as it will bend away from the inlet sooner and will be easier to keep heat down but the enclosed air box thing u come up with is a good idea it'l easi work
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 29 December 2010, 22:18
liam said he might have on but ive got to keep reminding him of these things

Yes, with the bulk of IQ that has just rushed into this thread this whole expedition can only end well.

I look forward to seeing the rabid power output graphs from a 1.6 carb engine with some bike carbs nailed to the back of it.

Well I will bring them. I will also look for a manifold. Now dh, am sure you mean well and know what your on about but instead of saying you need to do this and that idea won't work. Why don't you just see how it turns out. You may learn something. As it has been said many times b4 if all cars were the same it would be boring, and if we all thought the same then it would be a dull world. Cars are for experimenting with. Some ideas work, others don't. And as martin already said if it doesn't work we will rethink the idea.

^^^ Corrected

Gotta agree with DH, if i'm honest this, project neg and project £500 are 3 of the most boring threads on here now. This is simply because it is cluttered up with chat between you all, not enough updates about the cars or pictures of progress.

The point being made is that this is the Dub Rides section

Quote
Post up pictures of your car and get some feedback

Eventually this section evolved when people started shifting their project threads to here which made sense as most of us like feedback on what we've done..

But when they start turning into pages of single line posts about when people are going to meet or general chit chat about not very much the original point of the thread becomes some what lost.  The thread then appears only to be aimed at a couple of people and others loose interest.

Have to agree with you both Shaun and Dom. Shaun yours almost fell victim to that too unfortunately! :(

In the Dub Projects section my project has 3 pages of pure updates. In this section it has 27...

We're not saying cars are sh!t or anything like that, just detracts intrest which is a shame as they are all interesting projects!

am sure on every project thread there has been people talking to each ther and not everythry post has to be a full story or discusion and there are much more boring threads on here than the three u stated. and both neg and project 1.6 driver have been updated with pictures and info of whats been done .

Where did you find the wheels mate? Are they from the mk1 golf?? As i am sure i have seen these on them before? By the way check out the lincolnshire meet thread posted the bomber county dubs group sticker on it.

wheels were on ebay in nottingham, went and visited my sister when i picked them up.thats the only reason i traveled that far for them.
there not from a golf as they are a slightly smaller pcd which is annoying since he promised they were 4x100 when i picked them up and i had no way of checking, still got to make the best of it.
already been on that thread and love the sticker

i am going to trim the lip back,i cant roll them because of the plastic arch. the rears scrub slightly over bumps but the fronts will have to be cambered a bit more and have the lips altered to stop the scrubbing.if that doesnt work i will have to lift it up a bit

yeah i do like it on small bumpers,i just need to sort out the stripe on the back bumper.

im also looking at lower profile tyres so it would have to be on small bumpers for them

polybushed and welded wishbones and painted the calipers, aswell as a few other bits.
fixed the brake bias so now my back wheels dont lock up straight away.

now the new exhaust,
welded out of 2" stainless pipe using a gasless mig welder and im very happy of how it turned out,
thanks to jim for the pipe, ian for the awesome welding skills and i suppose liam cos i stole his old backbox without his knowlege
backbox was completely dismantled and the internals where fitted into a standard center box so it would fit in the tunnel without restricting the exhaust flow.
the pipes had to be off set to accomedate the fuel pump and the brake bias valve, bit of welding spatter but very good for gasless mig and it looks alot better in real life.
all mocked up and checked for fitment.
finally the exhaust hangers were welded on and it was heat wrapped at the back for where it would be close to the brake lines and fuel pump.

the fuel pump had a heat sheild put over it aswell to competely seperate it and there is enough room between the brake lines and the exhaust not to cause any problems.was on for a few days as a test and other than a small rattle there were no issues however is now removed cos it was too loud for the mot.and unfortunatly i didnt take any photos of it when fitted but it looked cool. side exits ftw

total cost £11.98  for some welding wire

new cold air feed, its increadably effective.the intake manifold temprature has dropped dramatically when running.
the air intake is directly under the front bumper facing forwards to improve air flow as muchas possible.

this is where the air feed runs down

Cracking work, exhaust is very different, will it not melt your arch trims however  :undecided:
Title: Re: project:1.6 driver, aka the beast
Post by: i_am_me on 30 May 2011, 19:50
ive had a few people tell me that seam welsded wish bones are a lot strongerso i thought i would give it a go.but i didnt want them too solid so i stitch welded them instead so they are still sacrificial in a crash.

arch trims are far enough away not to be a problem.although they do look very close i havent had a problem yet.

its nice to have them back on again instead of the passat wheels.
feels loads nicer to drive on these wheels, handles better, accelerates faster, sits lower and doesn't rub on full lock

i had been down to the metal on the old pads, but i didn't want to go and buy a set when i had been promised these.

im going to lift it up more so i can actually drive it

and the side exits need the tips swapping now cos i didnt use stainless for the tips,i used chromed steel and the chrome has got stonechipped and is going a bit rusty.

Post by: i_am_me on 25 January 2012, 18:30

i didnt realise how long it has been since i updated this but not too much has happened due to a rwd distraction
first off the mudflaps are gone
and i have some hubecntric spacers to goon but the arches need stretching outr even further to fit.
also decided to buy and fit nitrous
(http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv106/i_am_me_18/P18-01-12_2308.jpg)
cold fusion wet kit running 25bhp shot.
works but i have burnt out a solenoid so its running dry now but still has a significant effect on the power 8)
so if anyone knows where i can get some cheap solenoids from i would appreciate it 8)
also have fitted some guages
(http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv106/i_am_me_18/P25-01-12_175701.jpg)
oil pressure,vacuum gauge and a voltmeter 8)

also the injectors are fine, cant say they made a big difference though

another update.
first off i have bough an omp lower brace
(http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv106/i_am_me_18/P15-02-12_1454.jpg)
as you can see it looks a bit rough but its solid
so i thought i would clean it up and paint it before i fitted it
(http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv106/i_am_me_18/P16-02-12_135201.jpg)
it was a bit awkward to fit on my own but i managed it
also it is now running a kent gs22h camshaft with new tappets which has increased the power a bit although has moved the power further up the rev range
(http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv106/i_am_me_18/P29-02-12_1614.jpg)
also i have fitted an air cooled oil cooler with a billet alloy sandwich plate and braided hoses.
