Can I get text messages on screen with my Mk 7.5 GTi. Using an iPhone 6.
-
I can read them on the standard screen from my Android phone so don't see why you shouldn't be able to with an iPhone.
It's just a shame they don't fit a keyboard to the steering wheel to make replying easier
-
I can read them in my Macan so can’t see it’s a phone setting change that’s needed. Hopefully someone can help.
-
I noticed this too, I used to have a Windows phone and could get my messages through the head unit but now with my iPhone I can't. I can get them if I use carplay but I find using that too restrictive as it prevents me from controlling the phone via the MFD and steering wheel, forcing you to use the central screen instead which is a much worse experience and far more dangerous as it forces me to take my eyes off the road for much longer periods than using the wheel controls.

Yes its possible.
Its a setting on the phone itself.
Settings -> Bluetooth
Tap into the VW device (tap the "i" button).
Make sure "Show Notifications" is turned on.
Thats it.

@Joe ...thanks for that thats saved me plenty of frustration
-
Plug in and use the Apple CarPlay? Must admit didn't know you could get them on screen.
-
Brilliant Joe thanks for that. Worked a treat.
-
Even reads them out too. Great stuff.
-
Thanks Joe, great work!

No worries lads glad to help!
It does only show the texts that you’ve received while connected for that session. You don’t see old texts.
I noticed with the recent iOS 11 upgrade that contact photos work on the radio now too. I had to delete and re-add the 4 favourite contacts for the photos to appear there though.

Do this work on both head unit’s or just the Nav Pro?
-
My GTi is the standard nav and it works. Standard is just fine so don't really see any need me to upgrade as the MK 7.5 screen is a lot bigger

Thanks for the quick confirmation 👍 I have not specced the Nav Pro as I don’t think there are enough extra features to justify the £1325. I was loaned an R estate recently after I sold my R hatchback which had the Nav Pro in it and imo the gesture control was very hit and miss in its operation ( It was turned off when I picked it up..probably for a good reason ) the graphics on the sat nav however were very good

It works on both normal nav and pro but only from MIB 2 onwards.
The only thing is - who gets texts anymore, apart from texts from your Mum? Everyone’s WhatsApp’ing, snapchatting, etc these days...

Meh, built in VW text message thing and on screen keyboard is frikkin useless and likely to lead to accidents. POS.
I think its sunset time for OEM car data systems anyway, Android Auto is the future. Car Play too maybe if Apple can get their royal backsides in gear maybe too.
I don't use Whatsapp but Facebook messenger works in Android auto... you can't start a conversation with it yet, but if someone messages you it will notify you, read it out and let you reply.
Maybe Whatsapp is Android Auto too...
This week I discovered Iplayer is finally Android Auto enabled! That's making my daily struggle with John Humphreys a little easier.
