Title: Rear camera worth it?
Post by: Mag_Pie on 10 November 2017, 21:19
Just wondering what people's opinion of the rear camera is on the Golf? I like the idea and its another gadget but I had one on a hire car recently and I felt like if I tried to use the camera I just stared at the screen and neglected checking out the windows, sort of over concentrating on it. Where as without one you just simply look out the windows.

What's your thoughts people?

Well I have one on my Octavia, I find it useful and can recommend.

It's not a substitute for looking out of the windows, but it does help you to see things that can otherwise be difficult to see, e.g. small child behind your car.

Compared to some other options it's also relatively inexpensive.

Yes it's worth it and it's a pain in the a4se to retrofit. I've specced it on my last three VW's and will spec it again.

Had one on last car and even my Lotus Evora has one, so I spec’d it on my forthcoming GTI-PP.

I'd recommend it.Crystal clear fantastic wide view to the rear.Works very well with the PDC.Even in the dark it intensifies the available light.Buy it!.

Definitely.
Would not buy a modern VW without it.

And you've got to love that VW badge popping in and out!.

Had it on my last 3 vws   Always my first option
the fact that it’s behind the VW badge means that it’s alwaus clean when you need it 👍

Had one on my C Class as its std fit and probably one of the highest quality cameras and like the VW, hidden away so it never gets dirty unlike pretty much every other car. Not got one on the GTI and not missed it to be honest. The Golf is quite small and very easy to park and the back window is the end of the car unlike a saloon for example. The sensors are great so I guess as the saying goes, you pays your money....
Title: Re: Rear camera worth it?

I was sceptical when i first added it as an option on my previous Golf GTI.  But I will not be without it now.  An  essential option to add to your car in my opinion.  I use both looking out of windows/in mirrors and at the camera at same time for reversing.  It's just like having an extra mirror to look at which is out of your normal field of view.  Great to use when reversing up to low walls or in a busy areas with small children and objects such as trolleys around such as car parks.  I also find it is an asset on cold mornings when the mirrors are unusable until they have dried off/heated up.
Title: Re: Rear camera worth it?
Post by: SRGTD on 11 November 2017, 10:15
I have it on my car. Really useful for not reversing over my neighbour’s cat who seems to like sleeping and sunbathing on my driveway when the weather’s warm and sunny .

Not a substitute for using your mirrors and windows when reversing, but as others have said, a useful additional aid to see those low down objects behind the car that are out of your field of vision.
Title: Re: Rear camera worth it?
Post by: Gnasher on 11 November 2017, 12:17
It's very useful, if only for checking there's nothing straight behind the car that's too low to see out the window. It'll probably be cheaper than replacing the rear bumper if it saves you reversing over a bike or something.
Title: Re: Rear camera worth it?
Post by: CHB100 on 11 November 2017, 12:42
I couldn't be without it anymore, rely on it for tight parallel parking and general reversing as pointed out objects at ground level. The sensors beep so much at relatively distant objects one tends to not take absolute notice. I think it's good value all things considered, unlike most other extras!

On some cars it's a must have like on my CC but on a Golf no there is no need at all for one.

Of course!, is one of the best option!. Hate Parking sensors, with this you see exactly how close you are :) I can attach my trailer without adjust it

Love it...I use it to double-check that I definitely definitely definitely have put my security bollard down...
Sensors are beeping anyway due to proximity of my sons car. Trouble is it has spoilt me for when I drive a car without...

It's a great piece of kit and I'm very glad that I decided to spec it.
I'm not sure how much it costs now but it was pretty cheap when I got my car so was a no brainer really.
I would imagine it's even better on the larger screens of the facelift models

You can't be serious, cost near nothing and brilliant on the larger screen. No need? Are you invisible?

I've got one on my Amarok. On that is is a boon when reversing into tight spaces or up to a trailer hitch. Before having it, I never thought the Golf needed one. I'm not saying it does 'need' one, but I find myself looking at the screen in the Golf and being disapointed when there is no image there. It really is like having a fourth mirror.
Title: Re: Rear camera worth it?

Depends how you park, for ages I had to reverse up to a garage door, literally an inch from it in order to get the driveway gates to close. You cant get that close to an object on your own without a camera.

Title: Re: Rear camera worth it?
Post by: Splashalot on 12 November 2017, 03:52
My current car is the first with the rear view camera.  I was sceptical about them, but now wouldn't be without one.  The Golf camera is quite wide angle and great for reversing out of supermarket car park spaces - the camera can see approaching traffic/objects well before the driver turning their head, or by using mirrors.

I use all three info sources still when reversing (head turn, mirrors and camera), but the camera definitely picks up some objects the other two don't.

You still won't be able to judge an inch from something turning around. For the cost that a rear camera is it's a very helpful aid.

How much is the RVC now if specced?

I had it on my GTI PP and thought it was a cool gimmick. It was cheap at £150 ish too, as was the self parking thing which actually proved useful once or twice and was also cheap.

My R didn't have either option, neither did my GTD and neither does my Ed40.
I'd have both options again in a heartbeat.
The camera image is out of your line of sight so you do have to pull some funny head and neck movements when reversing: up, down, left, right, and repeat... so think of it as a workout as well as a useful gimmick.

It used to be a cheap retrofit too, but isn't anymore.

That's what parking sensors are for, you just need to adjust them to go solid tone when 1" away from an object.

When engaging reverse your camera screen shows the parking sensor vehicle on the screen's left most border.  Somehow I have managed to change my settings so mine now obscures half the camera's image automatically each time reverse is engaged.  (hope that makes sense)  I have to manually tap the screen each and every time to minimise the sensor image back to the left border of the screen.  Which is an irritant.

Does anyone know how to change this screen setting back to left margin only?

That's what parking sensors are for, you just need to adjust them to go solid tone when 1" away from an object.

How do you adjust the sensors?

We have cameras on all our Golfs and it would definitely be the first option I'd look for on any new car.

No way anyone would have reversed into the parallel space I did yesterday without a rear camera without a lot of guess work or blind faith.
Once and for all it's a must have extra and expect a forward facing option sometime soon
Think this thread has answered the OP enough. And As such I would recommend any new golf purchaser to add it to the spec before any or no other option is selected

What space? If you have front and rear sensors makes virtually no difference when parallel parking.

The Golf is such an easy car to park due to its small size. Having been driving for only 21 years, I've had one car with a rear camera and guess which car I've reversed into something. Yes, the car with a rear camera! It also had the self park. Which is great. For drivers unable to park.

I'd say the only time I found the camera very useful was reversing out a driveway as the wide angle lens meant you could see if say the road was clear. Again, less of a problem in the Golf as opposed a saloon car. Guess for £295 it's not a bad price but it's not as people are suggesting a 'must have Golf option'.

Again, less of a problem in the Golf as opposed a saloon car. Guess for £295 it's not a bad price but it's not as people are suggesting a 'must have Golf option'.

I can´t reverse, but drive very fast forward! .

But serious the hidden camera is probably best in the car world. I borrowed a new 330E last Week. The Camera was dirty after 3 hour and was useless..

I think rear camera is one of the best option for little money, besides the active cruise controll thats is the Number one option!

Yes and no, I got the hitch and it did come with a camera for measuring the angles of the hitch when parking BUT the camera wasn't wired up to the mmi, it's the highline camera with the bendy lines

That's what parking sensors are for, you just need to adjust them to go solid tone when 1" away from an object.

How do you adjust the sensors?

We have cameras on all our Golfs and it would definitely be the first option I'd look for on any new car.

I haven't had a look on the Golf because i dont need to but I did it on my CC but I'll have a look over the weekend.

I take it you forgot or had no choice to order it, you go ahead @nd trust blind parking with sensors, no pal caméras the next best thing to eyesight. Unless you are unfortunately blind, then  sound and touch are naturally. Let’s just agree, if you have a reverse camera on a Golf would you rather not have it and get the cash back.No

The point is.. Its an option. Is it a must have option for a competent driver? No. Its nice luxury.

And no, I didn't add one to my company car. I wouldn't pay for one on a Golf.

The OP asked Rear camera worth? Its good value as a opposed to retro fit so maybe yes it its worth it. The point is, its not necessary.

I think we now know that some people really like the camera and some don't see the need lol.

Why is it so expensive now? I think it was something like £150 when I specced mine, and at that price, it was worth it just for the badge to pop out when I reversed

'er indoors has just got a new Nissan Qashqui and that's got quite a good system - it's got camera's front and rear and one in the underside of each mirror. When you reverse it puts up 2 images on the screen, from the reverse camera and a composite that gives the effect of looking at the car from above. If you then go forward (or press the 'camera' button on the dash, you can have the front camera and plan view.

It takes a bit of getting used to and the infotainment system is a little (ok, a lot) clunky even compared to my 2014 MIB1 CMS but it's quite good for getting in the middle of a parking space as you can see the lines both sides on the plan view.

4 cameras fantastic! Problem is you have to buy Datsun sorry Nissan to have them. Only joking  good motors for the purpose.

I’m with you on this. I have the reverse camera as it was a cheap add-on and for the price it was then a bit of a no-brainer to spec.  But I use it a fraction of the time and if it wasn’t there would barely notice and definitely not miss it. Not on my list of must-haves.   If you can’t park a golf without a rear view camera then you can’t park.

Why is everyone saying if you can't park without a camera then you can't park!! It's got bugger all to do with being capable of parking and it's a visual aid. It doesn't suddenly render you incapable of your parking skills because you tick the rear camera on the spec sheet. It's a cheap optional extra that costs far more to retro fit so if you have one then excellent if you don't have one then that's also excellent. Ffs 8 pages on a rear camera!!

Completely agree. My last car didn't even have parking sensors, so I know I didn't spec it because of any inability to park. I have it because it's relatively inexpensive and from time to time it makes those unforeseen tricky reversing manoeuvres that little bit easier. Some on here only ever use reverse gear for parking, try reversing down a narrow winding country lane when there's something coming the other way. It's times like that the camera is there to help. Ffs, it's not like it reverses the car for you! Did people that specced DSG do so because they are incapable of changing gear?

Yes, really really fast and smooth.

And if you are very lucky, you can push a button to start the engine too.

Yep, little button starts the engine, and 2 little paddles change the gear, and another little button means you don't need the peddles 😃

You sure can, with the help of the clever gearbox doing most of the work for you.

Tis the devils work I tell you! Witchcraft!

Much better when to change gear you had to stop, dismantle the engine and swap the cog out!

Even bicycles have electric gear shifting these days. It will only be a matter of time until they are linked to power meters and will shift automatically.
