Title: Boneybradley's blue Mk3 8v Anniversary!! The keeper?
Post by: boneybradley on 14 January 2013, 18:09
Well I've finally done it and given up on Passat's (thanks to my insurers asking for way too much to add the wife!) adn I've swapped with a forum member for a Mk3 8v Anniversary 5 door (needed with my 3 young kids)

here it is.... in the snow! (I've already removed the red stripe along the doors to make it original, oh and my good stereo is now fitted)

first jobs to do

After that...... I'm looking for idea's at the mo but will keep it looking mostly original??

What do people think about another (and the best) Mk3 moderator owning an Anniversary?

if they are anniversary 7" wide I have seen them go for £350 in rough condition, later mk4 type 6.5" wide sell for half that. that half inch does make a big difference!

Does the trim off the sills clip on that easily? I wanted to have a butchers at mine. i'm scared at what it might reveal though, seeing as i was pulling rotten metal out of my plastoc arch trim the other day!!!

Ive got 2 pairs of 7 inch anni alloys now after selling my 8v so if anyone needs a set let me know! They'll need a refurb but they are presentable.

I have found the handbrake is sticking a bit today....so either cable or caliper repair time (both common mk3 issues, but the cable issue is a free fix! and I will try that first  :undecided:)... and tomorrow will be o.e headlamp blackening day!

The Hella's fitted may be going on ebay (unless I get a decent offer first!)

Title: Re: Boneybradley's Mk3 8v Anniversary more door..First Issues!
Post by: boneybradley on 16 January 2013, 18:55
Well I've had the car up on the ramps today and I have found a couple of issues (1 dangerous!!)

rear axle mounts are fooked (near side is split in 2 and isn't doing anything! and I thought the knock was the exhaust on the rear axle! )
front top mounts have gone
ball joint on front passenger side has gone
front wheel bearing has gone (I may be able to tighten yet?)
both rear shocks are fooked (leaky leaky!)

well It means I will need to spend £££ sooner but at least I can fit the shocks and springs I bought, so it's not all bad!

Post by: SoundillusioN on 16 January 2013, 20:41

Considering you've got a new suspension kit to fit anyway that list isn't too bad or expensive really. At least theres no structural issues to worry about.

t.b.h I was going to change them whilst fitting the new kit, I just wasn't going to do them yet! It's going in next week to be sorted, so soon it will be 100% (car had a full going over by my polish vw mechanic and they were the only issues, so it's not that bad)

and it just means my wife's anniversary present this year will be as crap as last years

sh!t, I thought the knocking was exhuast was catching ream beam at times also!!!

If id have know it was beam i wouldnt have been driving 80miles up the A1 in her.

supprised the rear shocks are tucked as previous owner claimed he had changed for last mot.

Thats quite a bad list considering the ive probably only put 4k on her since the mot 6months ago if that.

Really am shocked as i considered her to be well looked after and maintained.

Hope she gets sorted soon and i can only apoligise but I was honestly unaware of any of the faults other than those i told you of

Like i said i was unaware of the fualts, to my knowledge she was and is a bloody good example of a mk3 anni.

Title: Re: Boneybradley's Mk3 8v Anniversary more door..First Issues!
Post by: boneybradley on 17 January 2013, 08:50
I don't have an issue with the faults, there not serious and are common faults with the mk3.

I thought the knock was the exhaust (it just turned out it was the axle knocking on the exhaust ) It will all be sorted within the next 7 days (subject to the parts arriving) and it will be a bit closer to how I want the car to look anyway

well I have now fitted some o.e (but murdered) headlights which I prefer over the twins (which are on sale in the relevant board)

this week the car gets....

4 new shockers & springs
front and rear top mounts
rear axle mounts
tracking checked/adjusted after a week to let it settle

and I have further plans for the next month or so and I will update the board with details soonish!! (as long as no unexpected problems turn up! )

rear axle bushes - f&r febi top mounts - 4 shocks and springs

replaced with

just need it to settle a bit and get the tracking sorted and I will post how it looks

oh and they are fk top adjustable but I can't figure if number 1 or 6 is hard!! If anyone has any idea's as they seem very stiff at the mo
(they will/should settle and soften a bit?)

I have also bought a few pieces to fit over the next week or two to make it a little different!  :lipsrsealed:

Calipers red? Or have you just covered them in copper ease?

they are newly painted red calipers (like the anniversary has!)

oh and I can't still work out how to adjust the shocks (and fk are crap at giving help!!).  I have fitted the adjsuter but it dosent have 6 notches, they are infinatly adjustable (well the knob turns as much as I want)

So i guess I'm doing them wrong and they are set to max solid which makes it fun when it's icy!

You're doing it wrong

The adjusting tool will only locate firmly in one position, turn it whilst pressing down (the whole thing, not just the top). You should then be ablet to turn the dial and there will be audible clicks.

Title: Re: Boneybradley's Mk3 8v Anniversary more door.. Lowered with issues!
Post by: boneybradley on 02 February 2013, 19:43
Well I am having trouble getting the suspension adjusted from rock hard to anything else! (the top adjusters are crap and don't seem to work! so on Monday the shocks will be off and we will see if they will adjust off the car. If not the monroe's that came off will be going back on! with the lower springs.

I have bought a pair of metal pressed plates and have surrounded them with (possibly unique in Britain?) surrounds from the region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Eastern Germany). and I finally got some pics without snow

this might show the ride height at -30mm which may not look the best but it is practical (the wife needs to drive the car and she's not good with speed humps etc!)

I think it will come down another 10mm when the shocks are softer? (plus the tracking/camber needs playing with!)

next....
std airbox with panel filter (I still have the pipercross to swap/sell)
std exhaust from cat back
some minor paint tidying (a couple of little rust blisters coming through the paint...which are typical 1996 Golf!!)

oh and spacers? 10mm max so I have some adjustability in more lowering  :lipsrsealed:

Well the car has failed on me and won't move/drive!! It looks like the inner cv joint has shattered and I'm hoping it hasn't damaged the box etc!
I had being getting a sticky brake feeling/noise (which i know a caliper was a bit sticky, although it was given a good clean and it did free!)

The only good side is I'm away next week so i can do without the car which means I can get my staff of parts fitted... a few bits of powder coated brackets etc in the engine bay were my best buy costing me a whole 99p

I am also loking at some new shockers as the fk's fitted are a bit bouncy.... do i splash the cash and get bilsteins or go for gas monroe's??  :undecided: (the car is only lowered 25mm so I dont really need short shocks)

Well The fault is the inner cv has sheared all 6 bolts that hold it on! The cv has being refitted using high tensile bolts and everything has being checked and it all works fine. Just need to know what caused it now?

good thing is while I'm waiting for an answer I can get it fully serviced and a few under bonnet shiny bits fitted (as I don't need the car for the next week)

Well the inner cv joint is undamaged and she is now refitted using new bolts (although I have some o.e bolts are on order!).

while I was away for a few days she has had a service (plugs, all filters, oil) and a throttle body clean (with a new vw gasket), new anti roll bar bushes and new engine mounts fitted with a few bits of red added under the bonnet

that's my 99p powder coated front engine mount cradle and battery tray

ongoing is a new rocker cover.. powder coated or painted? and a timing belt kit.

next is new shockers (less sporty more o.e) - remote locking - paint work sorting - alloy refurb? - tyres that grip better than these Event's that are fitted!

well I have finally had time to give it a clean and polish

and she looks like

it has made me realise/check which bits need attention bodywise, so I am looking for a same colour passenger rear door, rear bumper, tailgate and it also need the rear quarter and 1 front wing lower painting.... I have being quoted £150 for the paint and I am currently in discussion with buying the panels for £150, I don't think that's bad for £300

oh and I have also being given this usa spec piece by fellow foum member ogryzek... cheers Greg

no it's that fk kit which has only lowered it 15-20mm.... a new set up is on it's way as it's far too hard for me!

That was supposed to be 40mm drop unless they meant 40mm from standard set up. Btw have you had your v5 yet as I ain't had a letter of dvla informing me of not owning car

Well more problems..... but only minor this time as a front wheel bearing collapsed!!

I have also had all the engine belts changed, new bilstein shockers (the car hopefully will settle a bit as it's as high as std.. it sits on -40mm fk springs!), rocker cover repaint and gasket and a new wheel bearing has all being fitted

the engine bay now has painted rocker, powder coated front engine mount cradle and a powder coated battery tray

oh and I got some chrome bonnet lifters (I was going to use rear boot one's but these were cheap JOM one's from germany)

and for laugh's here is how high she is standing (they were only fitted yesterday, so it's very early days for any lower!)

next is

replace all 4 tyres for falkens - fit remote lock kit - fit rear head rests as I have the o.e frames that simply bolt into the seat back (this means chopping the rear seat a bit though ) and I still have some paintwork to sort (I have tried to buy some replacement same colour panels of 2 people who have both let me down!!)

I wouldn't mind but plenty of mystic blue mk3's seem to be getting broken but either the prices are crazy or like I said....people don't want to sell the bits (that's 2 scrapped with the panels I want still fitted!!)

I like the red rocker cover

It's a cheap mod that improves the engine bay look hugely.. I am going to clean the bay a bit more too but not o.c.d style like yours

well it has just had the tracking done.... it was 14 degrees out!! no wonder it drove a bit crabby!

and I have had the tryes fitted and whilst it was there we did some checking of the springs (as to why it wasn't lower!) and I have found out it has estate springs fitted! well that means new springs to find as the rates are far too high for a hatch both front and back

amp and sub and rear head rests fitted.... being quite a productive weekend when you consider I have had all 3 kids in the warm weather!

here's how to fit the headrests.. strip the seat covers (they simply clip onto/over the metal backing! b.t.w these were freebies from a broken GL model)

unclip the plastic guides and unscrew the head rest runners
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7322/8714259701_f4c0c373cd_c.jpg)

and do the reverse to fit...you do need to cut a hole for the guides to go through the seat top but it's easy to find the correct location. Plus I didn't even need to remove the seats to fit them (I do need some black covers/headrests but the fronts are identical so they shouldn't be hard to find?)

next update hopefully will be more suspension work?? (as I'm still unsure about the springs that I have fitted!!)

front and rear headrest are different but they skins do fit, the shafts on the fronts wont fit the rears tho properly so you will need to put the skins on to your existing rear rests

early and late GTI's also have different fabrics

well due to injury I've done virtually no work to it! and it's now due the m.o.t (although it checks out all round ok, apart from the decat and exhaust which now rattles badly! new baffles needed?)

the mod I have done is some hella magic colour rear lights (clear)

they were very cheap for proper hella's and apart from a small crack (which is quite discreet) they seem fine although I am unsure of whether to give them some red paint (full red's?)

oh and a local guy (who's a german car specialist) breaks audi tt's for fun....maybe it's time for some goodies (or an engine? as he seems well priced and can give me proper engine history  :undecided:)

well after a week of the wife driving the GTI all over (she's done 500 miles!!) she pulled up last night and said it's broken and stuck in 3rd!! (she drove it 10 miles home in this 1 gear!!)

well the clutch pedal has gone to the floor, so luckily i know that means the clutch arm ratchet has failed and is a simple fix. It's a shame you also need to buy the cable clip, green cap and a new cable otherwise it would be a £10 fix (instead of a £80 one)

Well a few essential jobs have being completed and as usual with this car I have found a couple more!!

I now have a full stainless exhaust fitted as the middle box on the old set up was rotten from the inside (and welded to the rest of the exhaust!)
so it's twin pipes out back now
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3818/10119170296_7c43abf4b8.jpg)

sorry about the small pictures but I used my phone this time and flickr won't resize them!!

whilst underneath I noticed a bit of dreaded rust on the rubber bung holes, some prodding and scrapping revealed these were not rusted through but will need attending to properly before the winter makes them holes!

also I have noticed a few oil drops on the road and that has meant a good clean under the engine as there was oil everywhere (how can a drip create so much mess?) and I think it's the oil cooler mounting and when it get's new oil in a few weeks I will replace the o rings on the housing and hope for the best!

As I am jobless at the year end (although I have some interesting plans for the future!) I am thinking of what car I really want and have decided I want to stay mk3 but does that mean I spend on this one and buy another?
I have worked out a budget of £1500 for this which will make this one a very very good looking Anniversary (subject to no rust under the arches and sills?) and maybe a 1.8t conversion in the future?

Watch this space

but here's how the red's look

I have had the car on the ramps and all the suspension seems to be fine, although the tracking is slightly off! I also checked the state of the jacking points and as the wife's jacked it using the widow maker it has destroyed the sill, so it's time for some under neath work and I'm going to get both jacking points redone and strengthened before the ice comes.
I have also noticed a bit of rust at the driver side wing bottom, so I'm going to get the liner and arch off and see how bad things are, it's seems solid at the mo but you can never tell under the plastics!

You may also notice the front wheels are long beaches (thanks to ogryzek from this site for lending me his 2 spares), luckily I have bought a set of long beaches for winter which will be fitted with winter tyres (a bargain at £50 a corner for uniroyal's from camskill, and at least I can refurb the bbs over winter, once I find one to replace the damaged one!)

We'll I have a huge dilemma

Do I spend the £800-1000 the car needs to get in near perfect condition and put her away for weekend use
or
spend £250-350 and get her useable everyday but leaving the iffy bits of paintwork (loose the rust but no repaint) and spend the money on the second mk3 I have just put a deposit on?

That's right I have only gone and bought a VR6 (another mystic blue but 3 door this time! and some may of seen the pic's on ebay) Now that's a good dilemma to be in but it's a hard choice as I need 1 for daily use and the other for keeping tidy!  :undecided:

Well I picked the VR6 up earlier and it looks good for the money (no rattly chains etc) so I'm going to sort the anni starting next week (new sills and a small patch that will turn to rust if not sorted now!)

oh and the oil leak (from the cooler) will also be sorted! along with new tie rods (full lot), springs and a few bushes to tighten the handling (the VR6 steering is much more planted and I was told the tie rods on the anni had some play last MOT but I now know how much!!  :lipsrsealed:)
Title: Re: Boneybradley's Mk3 8v Anniversary more door.. Bodywork time!!
Post by: boneybradley on 08 January 2014, 13:00
Well as the body on the anni is in quite good nic, I have decided to sort the minor bits that come with age and I have started to strip her ready for the bodyshop

I expected to find rust under the plastics but apart from a small bubble on the front wing (which is getting replaced anyway due to lower scabs). I did find a ton of tigerseal holding a back arch on what I can't understand is why as they have 3 rivets holding them on normally that cost pence! Well there is a small dent on the arch that will also be getting sorted so rivets will be used when I get her back together

it's only 40mm but even at that it scrapes down my local high street!! (the vr6 doesn't though which is lower!) oh and a few goodies I have added

Anniversary Highline'd

oh and it also got some new steering arms and the feel and turn in is now lots and lots better (the springs also help as they are much softer than the last lot!)

I am currently in discussions with a welder to get a few parts sorted and I am also refurbing some wheels (for this or the VR??)
Title: Re: Boneybradley's Mk3 8v Anniversary more door.. Down Boy!!
Post by: boneybradley on 23 March 2014, 16:55
Well it's being a few fun weeks for the anniversary

First was a full machine polish (with a bit of paintwork correction as someone hit the car and left a few marks on the wing/bumper)

also changed were the front indicators and tow eye blanks for a perfect condition set (given to me by a good friend!)

also obtained for very low prices were a US cup holder and a set of genuine VW rubber mats (so much better than the carpet one's I had fitted)

and my final job was to switch wheels back to the BBS for summer which went with a major hitch (even though I had painted them ready for fitting)

I should check what I'm doing as when I went to balance the wheels, 1 was egg shaped (the one the wife hit the kerb with that spun ok but obviously had taken a proper knock!). So finding a BBS RS722 7" rim was difficult (cheapest on ebay was a proper rough one for around £100!) and I have settled for a set of 4 from a broken Anni in the end (so if anyone needs an Anni RS722 in 7x16 size let me know).

The only advantage was I stumbled across a small unit near my workshop who do body repairs and wheel refurbishments and they have quoted me £40 per wheel for a full acid dip and sand blast and full powdercoat (or a basecoat of powder for £20 a wheel). Luckily I turned up when someone was collecting a set of wheels done by them and the work looked very good.

Well the job list keeps growing but thanks to the wife ruining a winter tyre, I had to fit the bbs back before they were finished (polished) but at least it looks like an anni again (and I got the tracking redone and found it was 13degree out!! thats the wife's kerb touch parking I guess?)

and both anni's together (showing the new hella red/clear rear's fitted)

Next week the major work starts for the restoration which is

I keep adding bits but I'm not 100% on a lot as yet (I know what money I have to spend but many mk3 parts attract too much tax!!) oh and despite this car having new suspension and brakes within the last year, those parts will go on the black daily (which will donate some trim etc to the blue one). The black one will be the daily from next week!! (ready for the wife to kill! )[/list]

I also have a set of calipers that are 100% free, so dependant on what issue's I find with the current one's they may also be fitted??

oh and the work on this begins (I have a new wing waiting but have decided the brakes are more important!!)

Well I never updated this but I had some wheel bolt issues (the split rim bolts!!) giving me a wheel like

Luckily it happened a few miles from the motorway otherwise it would of being fun!! (it did happen about a mile from Bradford city centre! and I felt the vibration, so stopped quickly!). Now every bolt had come loose on that wheel and I think I know the cause?? Iffy nut lock (I have put some on last night to a bolt to see how it dries, so far it hasn't!! That's using the same bottle of VW genuine nut lock!!)

So I am currently redoing the wheels and will use some other nut lock (and plenty of it)

and that means the car is back on the red long beach alloys (but now fitted with summer tyres!)

Well it's being an odd few weeks with the blue Anni

First whilst I was travelling for work she broke a front wheel bearing and hub leaving me stranded in the middle of the country (and the garage didn't help as they kept ordering the wrong parts!! I did tell them which to order but they went there own way and it took there ramp out of action for 3 day's, so it wasn't all bad for me!), but a new hub and bearing later she's back 100%.

Then it was MOT time and she initially failed as a front brake hose split whilst the brakes were being tested (more expense as the Goodridge I have fitted are not cheap!! I partially blame my mechanic as they were not secured to the strut so had rubbed on the wheel rim over the last few months!). But that was the only issue and she passed with only minor advisories on the sills (which are due to get done very soon!).

I have now refitted the anni BBS which I painted in grey primer and then lacquered and I have fitted some upper and lower front vents (and now don't have fogs but as the Mk3.5 headlight switch wasn't for front fogs so they were surplus), oh and a new rear seat, gearnob and glovebox are now fitted (as they were far better condition than the current one's)

Next job's are a new steering wheel and then the paint (with a new wing and rear repair panel)... let's she if she behaves until then!!
