Clutch Pedal
« on: 06 February 2003, 22:32 »
I have only just noticed while driving my Mk2 8 valve GTi that the clutch pedal is significantly higher than the brake pedal.
Is there a method of adjustment or is there a clutch stop missing from the car? Is it an easy job to repair? I have looked in Haynes, but can't find any reference to a clutch stop.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I believe there are 2 types of clutch cable fitted to the Mk2, manual adjusting and automatic adjusting.
If you have a manual adjusting type, it may require adjustment.
The only adjustment that I know of is for freeplay at the pedal. With the Mk1's, if I remember correctly, you adjust for around 1" of free play at the pedal. With the Mk2's I think its less than that.....but your Haynes manual should cover all of this.
There is something else that rings a bell about the actual pedal stop getting bent and allowing the pedal to ride up too high on the Mk1's. I'll have a look at my stripped out Mk2 later and see if the same may apply.

This height problem is a common one. There is a plastic stop normally clipped to the part of the pedal box framework above the pedal. Check with the dealer for a replacement. I have replaced these often on cars I have bought and repaired.
If the clutch is stiff a new ORIGINAL cable will make a huge differenc. The same goes for the throttle cable. ONLY buy VW ORIGINAL here as I have tried cables from German & Swedish, and Euro car parts but these are crap!
