16v Stuttering between 4/6000rpm
« on: 06 January 2003, 23:17 »
My mk2 16v is currently stuttering when over the 4000rpm, i've come to the conclusion that it's an electrical fault as the rev counter is fluttering in that area.
I've changed the ECU, the spark plugs and leads and the number 18 relay as advised by a friend which has moved the stutter to the 5000 rpm.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be and how to cure it?

Could be a few things, some of which don't bare thinking about, but i will start with the simple stuff....

:-/ Try yer coil, its sounds like its starting to break down, which will only become apparent at high Revs, until its totally screwed.

Have you changed the Rotor arm and cap?

If that fails try the fuel system especially the filter. On Mk2's most people tend to forget to change it, as its buried in front of the fuel tank next to the Main pump.

If all this fails.

There is a slight chance that one of you valve springes is broken or weak, causing valve bounce at high revs, this happened to me with a Mk1 GTI. But is thankfully rare normally.

Hope this helps.

Good luck! :)

Good Luck

You changed the ECU :o
I bet that wasn't cheap.
I was going to suggest the rotor arm as the earlier GTI's had a rev limiter built into the rotor arm and I had one where the spring weakened and it cut in earlier.........but if you have an ECU then I guess you haven't got that type of rotor arm ???

Not being technical, there is a timing circuit. you can find it located in the engine bay under the drivers windscreen wiper. Remove the plastic sheet, and you'll see a circuit screwed in. Two screws to remove it.

If it is that, care is required when removing it so you don't break it. They may be tougher than i think, but i broke mine.

Replace it like for like. If you have a 16v do not accept the Lucas part. Go VW.

Regards,
Justin
