8v or 16v
« on: 11 February 2003, 16:23 »
Hi All,

In your opinion which is best the 8v or the 16v mk2 ?

I've owned 4 8v's but never had a 16v and I'm now looking for a new one.

Cheers,
ajh

Hi,

"You pays your money you takes ya choice".

If you have had 4 8v's then maybe it is time for a change. I have had a 16v in the past and driven a mate's 8v a fair bit. The problem these days with the 16v is that you need to install one of those k-star box of tricks if you want to run on unleaded.

Personally, I would go for a very late model 8v with power steering and as many options as possible.

Thanks for the response jv...

I've only got about ?1200 to spend though, so a late 8v is out of the question I think.

Hi, I'm no expert but I am of the opinion that the 8v motor is the grunty torquey motor(good) and the 16v is a revvy motor with less grunt(not so good IMO) I would personally go for the models with no ps cl or electric anything (less to go wrong, old cars see ;)) but then i am from ancient aircooled stock so i havent gotten used to creature comforts yet.

Don't ignore where your cars evolved from. Aircooled is COOL!!

Apparently the 8vs are more torquey at lower revs and then as the revs get higher, that is where the power picks up  ;D. I got my '88 for ?1300 off of autotrader. Has power steering etc. Just look in several different places and ask around for any 'deals'.

Good luck.

just my two pennies:

For 1200 quid your likely to get a much nicer 8 valve...than 16v...although th 16v is a bit quicker...if your restricteed to that budget...your prob better off with a mint 8 v...just my opinion!!!
