Title: My classic mini
Post by: richw911 on 23 July 2011, 21:30
Well i have spent over a year - in my spare time restoring a classic mini. (With lots of help from good friends)

From this :

And that looks better than it really is its had new - front panel, both front wings, both sills, half a floor rear quarter panel and both door skins.

Check out the outer sills - they had a new sill welded over the top of the attached rotting originals

Few other pics

Rich that's a really nice one - and good to see a Mini on 10's rather than the usual 12's or stupid Sportpack 13's!!

If my Midas ends up anything like that I will be very chuffed!!

This is my old Mini from many moons ago, and also the the car that I very nearly died in! originally Inca yellow, I bought it as an MOT failure, only needing a new rear subframe to put it back on the road, unfortunately, the same day it was re MOT'd, I went over a crossroads and collided with a brand new Merc that had shot a red light! despite wearing a seat belt, I went straight though the windscreen! the headlights ended up somewhere near the scuttle panel the impact was so hard...
Mini was recovered to my workshop, and some weeks later, a mate said "Bet you cant straighten that" well I did, and this is how it ended up looking..., and won quite a few trophies with it
Got some more pics somewhere, I'll see if I can find them...

I put one of these in the barn today.

As it's British the owner was very surprised when it started, as it'd been left for some time in his old garage.

He was less surprised when the clutch had seized and it wouldn't drive so we had to push it on the trailer.

Clutter.

It's a got a few old lady owner related dents and some rust in the boot and engine bay. Also the rear subframe is a bit rotten. Going to strip it completely and then fix the shell up and give the outside a blow over and then re bush everything, hammerite all the subframes, arms etc and then put it back together with probably a new rear sub frame. Will have all new window rubbers as the current ones are a bit split. Not going to paint the inside as it has a nice level of patina.

I still love tinkering with them, they're so fun to work on, but I wouldn't own another one. Well not while I still have the Golf anyway.

We're budgeting £1000 for the refurb which I reckon should be doable. Car will be worth a good 3.5K when done.

I've spent more on tools than parts for the Midas so far. I have a feeling this will change once I start playing with engines, rebushing suspension parts and researching how to replace bits I can't get anymore...

FAO Chuff

Well not much to update, the car is still waiting for an MOT as ive had more important things going on.

I have put the last parts of interior cards in new head unit, a 12v power socket and given it a good wax.

Here a few more shots not ideal as it was raining :

Although my appreciation of Minis is pretty much non-existent (I simply don't get them) Mike, one of the Wellow Racing folks has one.

1380cc motor, with twin SUs etc.

It's a 'new' M-plate, but has been altered to look like like an old one.

He's not been able to drive it since it arrived last summer, as the clutch slave wasn't working.

Yesterday he finally sorted it out and zipped/bounced up the drive and back with it:

Suddenly he's got a touch more spark in his eyes.

Great work!

That is a little beaut of a car you've got there. Nicely documented too, the pics really give a good impression of the amount of work and care that went into it.

You not tempted to reinstate the outrageous orange paint detail? The blue looks fantastic mind!

Love this, real quality. The earlier rear lights make all the difference.

I got my mini when Iwas 12 and finished it when I was 16. Needed all the welding, wings/a-panels, done a full job although not to the best standard. But living my dream at the time. Painted it what I called 'Homer Simpsons Trousers Blue', 10" Weller 8 spokes, centre exit exhaust, lowered steering column and wee mountny wheel. Everyone was so jealous of it.

Anyway alas the dream never became reality as the month I passed my test I sold it and bought a Mk1 Golf.

Going to get another one soon.

Keep up the good work.
