How old are they?

Even if they were fitted fairly recently, they could have been sitting in storage for some time, so could have been quite old by the time they were fitted. There should have a 4 digit code on the sidewall, which will be the date they were manufactured - first 2 digits are the week of manufacture and the last 2 digits, the year. e.g. 0117 would mean they were manufactured in the first week of 2017.

not exactly sure on fitting date .. but must have been in the last year ... car is a 2014 with only 8500miles on it .... code on it is 1312 .. these were replaced sometime in 2016 through the VW wheel/tyre insurance thing .... iv sent pictures to Pirelli UK ... so lets see what happens

Did you pay for the tyres or did they come fitted when you bought the car

No .. I bought car with them fitted ... but that shouldn't matter .. was told they were done by VW not long previous to me buying the car ... I got can in December ...
most important thing is to determine if they are safe or not ..

Never trust a thing a dealer tells you the wheels probably got replaced and they just transferred the tyres over so proving to Pirelli the tyres are at fault will be near impossible  if it was my car the next journey would be to a tyre place to have them replaced your life or someone else's is worth more than 200 quid

Called VW Aberdeen today and explained the situation ... I'm now booked in for Thursday to get two new tyres fitted free !

A good outcome.

Hopefully they'll fit a decent brand of tyre with good grip / handling characteristics, and not some and not some poor performing unknown budget brand.

Mine did exactly the same they were only three years old and had done 7500 miles it was picked up as a advisory on first MOT.Replaced with continental.
You live and learn i will not buy Pirelli tyres in the future had no choice this time as they were on the car from new.
