No, you just like taking things apart and putting them back together again. There's not much point doing that to a new car so I guess you can have a good excuse to do it to an old one.

The good thing about a mk2 is the fact they were made properly in the first place. If you can find one that has not been crashed you have an excellent starting point for a restoration project. Stick a 2.0 8v in it and you're away; can't think of anything I'd rather drive on a daily basis than that.
I would rather rebuild the 1.8 myself. Much simpler and less/no electronics to go wrong. Give me mechanical control over electronic anyday.

Been thinking that most of spend half there time on this forum toying with idea of modifying their cars. Mods to 30k + car with the latest and greatest alloys, exhausts, brakes, lights, nav/sound systems, re-maps is an expensive labour of love. Therefore most of us never actually get round to doing half these things in all the time we own the car.

In view of this would it not be better to opt for a nearly new mk6 golf instead of say a new Mk7 and modify it to your hearts content.....?

2.0 just gives it that extra bit of torque, mates up well to the existing 1.8 head and cam too. Me want (me want too much, me need lottery win)
