Justification for gti!
« on: 24 May 2003, 17:30 »
Just spent the whole of a shift at work justfiying buying a gti to my boss. Because I'm 19 and a student he reckons i'm mad buying a gti and a much nicer 1.0L punto would be a better idea until I'm in full time work. Made a lot of sense but thats not put me off!

Problem is I'm going to face the same resistance when telling my dad that I'm buying the car. Still living at home so need the approval!

I can see it being very difficult to justify buying a gti. The obvious answer of its fast and looks good wont go down too well!

Need some good reasons to buy one!

Heres things to go in my favour
- When he was my age he had a flash car
- Its my money
- Its a golf and he's got a golf

And against
- His golf has a smaller engine
- He'll say its too unreliable and cant afford to get it fixed
- my brothers cars have caused him a LOT of grief

Any suggestions for reasons please......!

wot GTI you thinking of? If your thinking Mk1 you could go for the 1.6 GTI. I've got one (and i've just turned 20 last week). Insurance isn't too bad, and it's still really quick.
If your prepared to look after it, you shouldn't have any grief.

Good luck.

Had the big talk today, after an hours arguing he basically said its my money but STRONGLY recomended that I go for something with a smaller engine n more reliable. Says the repairs will cost a bomb and fuel economy wil be crap. Any truth in this?

My commen sense is telling me to agree with him, ive got the cash to buy, insure and tax the car but not much to cover when things go tits up. With only a part time job and living as a student in manchester I really cant afford a lot of repair work.

Convince me it'll work out...... ;)

Repairs wont be too much of an issue as long as you have bought a non thrashed car.

AA Check is probably your best peace of mind.

On the subject of a Punto - they have all been thrashed ;-) Unless you have driven one you wouldn't believe how good they are. The 1litre is a little small and manic, the 1.2 is manic.

You will be paying for repairs on a Punto.

Regards,
Justin

Hello

My girlfriend drives our 16v mk2 every day to work and back the fuel economy is very good. The only thing is having to fill it up with shell optimax or superunleaded because there aint many shell garages where i live.

Go and get a standard gti you wont look back.

Good luck.

i agree, the fuel ecomony wnt b an issue - both the 8v & 16v r fantastic - u wnt realise ur drivin such a mota wi the economy,ok,its no gna b the same as a poxy clio or festa but it wont b astronomical!  as i said, the reliability factor is also bloody gud - german build quality m8!!!!!!!!!!   ;)

I justified mine to myself and my parents cos i was going from an 85 mini - which was eating away at my wallet, and beginning to disapear in front of me (rust!) to a standard more refined much much quieter bigger car with 5 gears  ;D

the car has also just justified to me that i need spax or similar with possible drop for the m.o.t.  ;) haha
