I've no GTD experience but it has been rather cold and to me, 43mpg sounds rather good! Mine is less thirsty than Booth's greedy monster and I'm getting around 30 in my GTI, less some days, not much more on others.

I had a mk6 GTD and the winter fuel consumption was (from memory) a good 10-15% worse than it was during the warmer summer months. Agree with Watts; 43 mpg sounds OK for a diesel during the colder winter months.

Was your DPF going through a regeneration cycle when the engine was idling at higher rpm than normal engine idle speed?

It's all in your right foot. Across a whole tank of fuel I managed everything from 40 to 60mpg.... on shorter but still significant distance blasts got up 70 and as low as 30 - in a MY17 GTD DSG.

Getting 60+ mpg takes a lot of foresight and paying attention to traffic and terrain - hardly any throttle beyond a third to half way down and the only time you brake is when you want to actually come to a full stop.

My current av on the trip comp is 53mpg.But in reality it's more like about 43mpg.Brim to brim and resetting the odometer is the best way to get your (real) average mpg.
Car does a lot of active regens so uses even more fuel.

Have you got the think blue trainer display on yours? If you do, use that to learn how to get better fuel economy...
