Oil consumption
« on: 20 March 2022, 18:21 »
Hey guys it is common for the GTI engine (CHHA) to use oil?

Mine seems to have dropped from full to half on the dipstick in around 200 miles, which I think is excessive.

No sign of smoke or leaks, it has done 38,000 miles and I haven't been driving it hard.

Was it parked in the same place and in the same orientation both times you checked? Just thinking that you may have had two false readings due to a lean (one over and one under). If not then that is excessive in 200 miles and if it was me, I'd be getting it checked over sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the reply. it was in the same place, but it could be possible that I got a false reading the first time. I have topped it back up and will check again in a few days.

I have only had the car 12 days so if something is wrong I need to get on top of it as it has a warranty.

I bet it will be fine, just be 100% sure of the reading and position of the car each time you check. I've only had to top the oil up once between my 7 and 7.5 about 5 years ago, they really don't seem to use any oil. I had a 2003 Audi A4 which needed constant topping up but it was within tolerance. Kept the oil fresh though!

I check mine regularly in exactly the same position after fully warming up and then allowing to settle for 10 mins. Never appears to change (but it never gets thrashed / always allowed to warm up / down etc). Unless you have a leak, that’s a lot of oil to use - I’d guess a false reading. Consistency is the key 👍.

I haven’t needed a drop of oil in over 3 years and 22k miles.
I was meticulous in following guidance when running in.
Dipstick at most will move from full to 1/2 from service to service.
It shouldn’t use that much under any circumstances.

Did it have a service before you got it? As maybe it was filling up the oil filter in them 200 miles

Yes it was serviced before I got it. I will monitor the level over the next couple of weeks and go from there.
