lol - cheers JV

obviously got my Dub Rides thread but wanted a place to put everything in a tidy order and also i haven't finished yet

Bit of story first -

Bought in February 2006 from a guy in Bristol for £8200 with 56K on the clock, full VWSH, and had the cambelt replaced at 50K.  Pretty much fell in love with it when i saw it and put a deposit down there and then

Full spec:

GT TDI 1.9 TDI with 130bhp and 223lbs ft torque
Electric windows all round
Air con etc etc
only real options that were specced where the Montreal II's wheels (big plus!) and a single slot CD player
Having previously been a lease car it was clear that budget was tight lol

Few pics from the advert and what i took when i viewed it:

Returned the following week which happened to be my birthday - got up early to catch the train and arrived in plenty of time.  Arrived to find out the guy had stuck petrol in the tank and the engine just cut out. Fecking great   instead of taking the long way home to enjoy a pub lunch was spent in the middle of Yate trying to kill time whilst the muppet sorted everything out.  He eventually got the car on a low loader, emptied the tank and then refuelled it to the brim

So eventaully left having pretty much ruined my birthday.....except the drive home was a lot of fun! Having previously owned a MKII 1.6 Golf it was obvioulsy a big step up but even i was amazed at how quickly and easily the TDI made progress - it surprised a few unsuspecting fools too

Thankfully there were no long term problems after having petrol put in the tank though as a precaution i got the fuel filter changed a couple of days later for peace of mind

so on with the mods

first up was a set of custom mats from Justmatz - the pic shown doesn't show the TDI with red D and I and the only pics i have are out of snyc so this will do

they have stood over 2 years of abuse so well worth the money.

Next was a Phatnoise MP3 system - same concept as the Kenwood Music Keg system.  Originally designed for the MKV i found that it could be used for the MKIV so a purchase was made.  Initially it was supposed to fit in the CD changer bracket in the cubby hole in the boot but it wouldn't fit so took my tools out of the spare wheel well and hacked at it with a stanley knife - relocated the tools to the cubby hole

still makes it easy to get at the disk quickly for adding more songs

after my remap my clutch lasted all of about a month before the dreaded slipping began

so began my search for a new one - putting a standard clutch back in wasn't going to be cost effective.  After a lot of reading on another forum i settled on a Sachs Organic Clutch

only problem being it wasn't cheap

£468 for the pressure and friction plates
£210 for the flywheel (may as well replace it as its apart!)
£40 for the release bearing
£200 fitting

if only it went that smoothly - basically i was supplied the wrong flywheel   after a ding dong with the supplier, who insisted they had supplied me with the correct part, i managed to source another flywheel and thankfully had the car back for the weekend

got fed up running around the works van

next up i decided it was time to finally fit the SFS Performance intercooler hose that i picked up in April (its now end of June in the scheme of things!)

i also purchased a larger screen wash bottle and using my newly acquired Halfords Pro socket set attacked the front end of the car

Bumper off - little did i know how proficient i'd become in being able to remove this  :lipsrsealed:

i was feeling fairly pleased with my Saturday afternoon exploits of fitting both the bottle and the pipe and celebrated with my friend Stella - obviosuly being a responsible adult this meant that i didn't drive the car that day.....................

So Sunday came and thought it best to give the car a go to make sure my work had been done properly

i made it about 500 hundred yards before the pipe went 'pop' and came off.  Looked behind to see HUGE clouds of black smoke pouring out of the back so turned around and went back home.

Naturally the pipe didn't pop off from the EGR end as that would have been an easy fix - nope it blew off from the intercooler end which meant i had to remove the bumper etc to get at it

refitted and tried again - made it a bit further this time and 'pop' (you can see where this is going can't you) - same process again, same test drive , same result.

It was now 5.30pm on Sunday afternoon and me needing the car for work the following day i refitted the old pipe, put it back together and test drove - it was OK!!   lots of head scratching followed and after a bit of research i thought the fact i was missing a couple of o-rings on the connectors might have been the cause - so ordered them.

Tried fitting again the day before GTI Festival in July and increadibly the pipe stayed on!! RESULT!!

So it was up early on the Sunday morning to meet up with Rich and GTI Matt - everything was going well, i was averaging 50+mpg at an average speed of 70mph  :smug: and then 40 miles in i heard the oh so familiar 'pop'

Pulled into a service that i almost passed, popped the bonnet and thankfully it had popped off from the EGR; someone likes me lol, refitted and continued on my way.  Got a further 10 miles and yep same thing again.  Made it to Strensham services to meet up with Rich and Matt and set off.  I didn't make it off the slip road (that will teach me to show off )

Refitted and managed to get to GTI Festival AND back home without any further issues.

All was well for about 5 days until it happened again on my way to work

Got the lads in work to have a look and annoyingly found a simple answer to my problems - i had only hand tightened the jubilee clips with a screwdriver - Rob got a ratchet and socket on the clip and tightened it up. Result - hasn't come loose in 2000 miles - clearly jinxed myself now though

Thanks again to Rich for picking me up a set of VW Logo'd mud flaps

Then after lots of reading i picked up a copy of VAG TACHO and re-programmed my clocks to have the Miles to Empty feature and the needles lit when you turn on the ignition - looks awesome in low level light conditions and also very handy in brighter conditions when you've got your sunglasses on :afro:

Big thanks goes to my good mate Dave (dai-cymru) for fitting the springs along with some help from Alan from work as it turned into a pig of a job.....thankfully the end result is well worth it :afro:

well pleased with it as it plays MP3's from CD or USB stick - i've ordered a 60gig slimline hard drive which i'll locate in the glovebox.

The unit also has bluetooth for your phone and works well; can use voice dialling or set it to have dialling presets so literally 2 touches and you're ringing your neaerst and dearest (or your weekend b!tch!)

well slimline HD won't work unless i fit some kind of power inverter thingy majig so i bought an 8gig USB stick instead lol

also went to fit my new airbox pipe from SFS

but its completely the wrong shape and size   been trying to sort out a replacement............

Off to Portsmouth this weekend to finally find out what the old girl is pushing out - i don't think its more than 170bhp; struggled to shake off a MKV 170 TDI

gives me an excuse for a full turbo back Milltek and perhaps a little tweaking with my remap...............

well after a 5.15am start to get to Portsmouth after 9 months of running a mapped TDI i found out that she's pushing out the following

157.bhp
280lbs ft torque!!

little disappointed with the bhp figure but well pleased with the torque figure - curve is fairly smooth although it seems to dip then pull again  :undecided:

gives me an excuse for a fill Milltek to crack the 160bhp mark

forgot to mention that i did have a tiny accident in the Golf when i decided to rear end a Shogun  :embarassed:

thankfully the only damage was a cracked front grill - i've bought a new one and some paint but haven't got around to painting it

hoping to get it sprayed up in work this week :afro:

also got a bit of a dodgy idle and the engine feels strained - hoping to get to the bottom of it this week and return her to full health

sprayed and fitted my new front grill

no pics as i'd forgotten to charge my camera battery  :embarassed:

looks quite good though to will try and take some pics soon - maybe when i've washed it as the whole car is bogging and must have at least 2000 miles of dirt on it  :lipsrsealed:

power all over the rev range and 55mpg + on a regular basis  :smug:

just bagged myself an auto dimming rear view mirror so will be fitting that over the xmas period

will also need a service as its counting down.......i only serviced it in July and i can't quite believe i've covered nearly 10K miles since then  :undecided:

then its the dreaded MOT in January

got another 12 months ticket - no advisory although thanks to lack of use and the cold weather i think my rear brakes / handbrake is remaining on  :undecided:  hopefully a nice decent run should loosen it up otherwise i'll need to get it looked at

bagged myself a Recaro interior too coutersey of my good mate Dai-Cymru - needs a good cleaning which will hopefully be done this weekend but it depends on how quickly we get the engine out of his car

drivers side needs a small repair too

also got my auto-dimming mirror to fit - going to get a local windscreen place to bond the new bracket to the screen as i don't fancy trying to stick it on myself!

ordered a new seat base for my drivers seat which i picked up this evening - going to have a go at fitting that this weekend along with a mini service

though i can see myself at Dai's trying to see if we can get his damn car running

got a quote to repair the wear on the bolster of £50 BUT the bloke can't be sure of matching the fabric  :undecided:  so currently trying to source some material for him to sew in

well done the mini-service or rather Rob in work did the oil change whilst i swapped out the air filter lol - did that Thursday night

so that left my Saturday morning free to change my seat base

took a couple of hours but well worth the effort

look at the difference!

now have a revised shopping list lol

Forge TDI Pancake Pipe - Ordered  :smug:
TT Wishbone bushes
New front speakers
Milltek exhaust
New drivers doorcard

also need to investigate the vibration i get under heavy load - get a sinking feeling its my flywheel   will not be impressed if it is as its less than 9 months old

sold my old seats for a pittance but i'm getting one of the old seats so i can rip it apart for the fabric and get my drivers seat repaired

pics to follow after i've given the car a clean

bit of a bonus is that even since fitting the new wheels my MPG hasn't changed a bit  :smug:  long term average is holding at 51.7mpg  :nerd: :smug:

Anniversary valence turned up yesterday :afro:

got a few jobs lined up over the next month or so

replace all vacuum lines and check for boost leaks
spray my new valence - got some wet and dry and some black paint last night
spray my autodimming mirror black and get it fitted
fit pancake pipe - coming very soon!
spray my wing mirror covers
fit TT wishbone bushes and possibly new wishbones and new ball joints
get my drivers seat repaired
detail the car
hopefully get the intercooler clamps if SFS ever get round to actually selling them...........

Title: Re: rhyso - dirty diesel power!
Post by: Rhyso on 05 March 2009, 21:16
1)replace vaccuum lines

with the help of Rob from work we removed the vaccuum lines from the car and the boost soleniods - most of them were in good condition so we only ended up replacing a couple

also cable tied my intercooler pipe to the EGR valve as you could move the coupling about 2mm by hand! the sooner someone sorts some proper clamps the better and they'll make an absolute fortune!

no real noticeable difference although it does seem a little quieter and pulls a fraction harder but it could be the placebo effect  :undecided:

Update on the above ^^^^

Steve_PD had a similar problem with overboosting and has just fitted a new N75 valve so i'll be ordering that tomorrow

Also need to order a new coolant temperature sensor and thermostat as my temp gauge is urm confused lol

Pancake pipe should be here this week too

big thanks to Dai-Cymru for solving my boost leak - simple really - it does help if you swap the o-rings from the old pipe to the new pipe........

so thats one problem solved - still seem to have an apparent lack of power but fook me!! The top end is relentess!!  and much smoother it seems since i fitted the new N75 valve

temp gauge now sits bang on 90 all day long - will monitor MPG over the next couple of weeks

Sadly whilst Dai solved one problem he may have found another........oil in the intercooler!! Which normally means that the seals on the turbo are on their way.......

also i think Forge really should have developed the pipe a little more thoroughly - they have swapped the position of the bracket from the back to the front

position of old bracket - you can see the forge pipe doesn't have it.........

at the moment the red turbo pipe and the forge pipe are rubbing against the drive shaft - not sure if i'm missing a bracket which hold the red pipe in place  :undecided:
Title: Re: rhyso - dirty diesel power!
Post by: Rhyso on 15 March 2009, 22:23
^^^^

yes i am missing a bracket - the one Forge removed from their new pancake pipe so going to have to come up with a fix before my driveshaft wears through the red pipe

some good news is that done a bit more research into oil in the intercooler and it seems its perfectly normal - the main check anyone can do is to ensure you're not burning oil excessively

just ordered some new front discs and pads as mine are rumbling quite a bit...........

Title: Re: rhyso - dirty diesel power!
Post by: Rhyso on 22 March 2009, 18:03
currently cable tied the pancake pipe so it no longer rubs against the driveshaft

and i'm not exactly over the moon with Forge's resoponse to my problem
http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/258329.aspx

also had my new discs and pads fitted Thursday night so i actually stop without rumbling noises

on a more positive note managed to spruce up the motor over the weekend so here's some better pics of the valence

My results from Saturday's Rolling road day

obviously extremely pleased but i think the torque figure is rather high

only basis i got for comparison is the JKM rolling road but i had my Custom Code map on the car at the time.  If there is another day at JKM later on in the year i'll try and get the car down to see how true the figures are
Title: Re: rhyso - dirty diesel power!
Post by: Rhyso on 12 April 2009, 18:26
well since having my brakes fitted my steering has felt rubbish - its lack there is a complete lack of weight to the steering, especially at speed  :undecided:  initially i thought it was down to high tyre pressures (thanks to some dodgy gauges in work!) but even though initially things felt improved it hasn't solved the problem

have had it up on the ramps and there appears to be no play in anything  :undecided:  although the wishbone bushes don't look terrribly clever so going
so have ordered some new wishbones and will be ordering the TT bushes to fit them on Tuesday

in terms of engine performance - MPG is improving thanks to better weather and me knowing where all the power is and using it more effectively; i've seen 60mpg on the run to work this last week or so and over 50mpg on the way back despite the last 3 miles travelling up a steep hill and covering approx 1000 feet in height!

going to get another can of satin black paint and spray my lower front grills and front valence to match the Anni rear - can't have grey on the car

got to get the tracking done but first impressions are ok but i haven't really thrown the car about and i won't until i know both wheels are pointing in the same direction
Title: Re: rhyso - dirty diesel power!
Post by: Rhyso on 17 May 2009, 19:24
thanks to my monumental amount of torque   i had an expensive weekend when my intercooler hose popped off and destroyed the EGR housing meaning a new EGR plus fitting at a cost of £200 - its even more annoying when you consider the EGR has been mapped out so its just an expensive shiney bit of metal

in an ideal world i would have bought the Allard delete kit but i was back home in Pembrokshire and needed the car back on the road ASAP.  Top marks do go to the local VW dealer - Sinclair Neyland who ordered the part Friday afternoon and fitted me in on Saturday meaning i was back on the road within 24 hours

4 wheel alignment tomorrow so will post again with hopefully some good results as i'm expecting it to be a little bit out

picture of the new (still useless) EGR Valve

so today i had proper 4 wheel alignment carried out at Mototec in Blackwood near where i live

here's the results
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/Alignment.jpg)

as you can see the camber was out but not as much as i was expecting

a quick adjustment and this is what i've now got
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/Alignment001.jpg)

and they did a chassis alignment - looks straight to me

Picture of the car on the ramps
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/DSC00074.jpg)

First impressions are good; despite it being only a small adjustment it does seem better planted at speed like it used to be.  Most of this could well be a placebo effect but as long as its a positive one i dont really mind

and also my steering wheel now sits perfectly straight  :smug:

IMO well worth the £43 it cost me and after any further suspension work i'll definitely be heading back to Mototec :afro:

hit the big 100K the other day!!

also the last few weeks i've noticed my steering wheel getting looser and looser in that and can wiggle it back and forth so today i popped th airbag off to have a good look - turns outs the bolt had come LOOSE!!    my own fault really as i've reused the bolt more than the 3 times VW suggest so luckily i had bought another in preparation; stuck it in and all seems good

Not much to report

had the cambelt and water pump changed at the end of May - VW also replaced my auxillary belt FOC as it was cracked so can't fault their service really

Got a slightly detuned map from Nick @ R-Tech to help reduce the flywheel judder i'm getting - first impressions are pretty good - much less judder and MPG is unchanged.  I'm hoping to go see Nick in August for a rolling road session and possilby some other goodies; will have to wait and see what cash i got  :undecided:

Steering issues - the more i drive the car the more i'm disliking the Falkens - very noisey and they just don't inspire much confidence when pushing on   going to save up and try some Michelin Pilot Sports methinks.

At a bit of a crossroads with the car - something inside me tells me i want something newer but my bank account says different lol.  One thing is for sure - i won't be going hybrid turbo.  TBE is my next major mod and i might try some THS engine mounts but that will most likely be it  :undecided:

really fooked off with the intercooler pipe blowing off at the moment - has happened 3 times as in as many weeks

ordered myself an EGR delete pipe so i can put extra clamps on the hose as one just isn't enough - doesn't help the hose itself appears to be disintegrating

reet but of an update and most of it isn't great..........

Fitted the EGR delete pipe as shown in the pic below
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/IMG_1634.jpg)

initially held on with a couple of jubilee clips but that wouldn't last 1.5 seconds of full boost so Alan found that big huge clamp you see in the pic

Sadly we didn't have time to properly remove the pipe from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve so we left in it in place.  Unfortunately that allowed too much movement in the pipe and as a result  i was venting exhaust gases with the result being i ended up on the back of this

going to limp the car into work (would have had it recovered there but didn't have my keys) and Alan will remove the pipe and refit the blanking plate in place.  Fingers crossed that will sort it

ok so this last week i have now bought

THS Engine mounts and new bolts
Innotec Turbo Cleaner
VRS Rear Beam Bushes
Rear discs and pads

mounts and bushes are being fitted Sunday all being well.  Possibly the brakes too depending if they turn up in time

Turbo cleaner will be done when up at R-Tech beginning of next month

right.....because Steve_PD's car turned into a bit of a nightmare job with bleeding the brakes that meant there was only enough time to fit the engine mounts to my car - big thanks to Lee (Johnson6672) for doing the work

The gearbox side mount was in good condition but the engine mount wasn't! Lots of play in it and it was not very far off from being useless

First impressions - increase in cabin vibration but only when stationary / idling otherwise once on the move its very impressive - reduced engine movement which has led to reduced wheel hopping which means full throttle 2nd gear can be done without introducing minimal wheel spin

Hopefully they'll settle in a little more but otherwise i'm very pleased

done a couple of niggly jobs tonight

bought some new door cards of Efunc over the weekend as my driver's door has had a crack in it ever since i bought it and i wasn't paying £100 for a new one so picked up all 4 for £50

swapped that over and jobs a good one

Also my passenger door speaker has been rattling over the last week so finally got annoyed, whipped off the door card and re-secured it - all seems ok at the moment

Well I've had an eventful few days with the poxy thing

Last Wednesday on my way home i developed a boost leak  Not as obvious as previous ones as there was little smoke but it was obvious something was venting air

I had a quick look under the car and and the bonnet but couldn't see anything obvious.  Being as I needed the car for the JKM RR day and weekend away i had no choice but to put it into VW for it to be checked out.  I had a suspiscion that the red turbo outlet pipe was the most likley culprit.  So Thursday morning the car was dropped off.

Received a call later that day saying there was 1.5inch split in the red outlet pipe  and it would be £100 for a new one!!    Was going to fit it but didn't have time to sort it myself so VW fitted it for me

Drove down to Portsmouth on Friday; car didn't miss a beat

Stuck it on the RR @ JKM on Saturday and was left more than confused! 169.9bhp and 310lbs ft torque  :undecided:  And more annoyingly I've got that dip back in my torque curve

Got a feeling the red tubo pipe when re-fitted has 'kinked' like it had before so on the weekend I'll be sorting that out and also borrowing Mr Dave's boost leak tester to make sure I've got no boost leaks.

Car 'feels' faster than the 170bhp suggested by the rollers and feels no different on the road although Jim @ JKM did briefly mention I could have a possible injector problem  :undecided:  Might book myself in at Nick's and get it back on his rollers and do some testing but that may have to wait as I'm skint

Following on from  this thread  (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=131053.0) I took a chance and with the aid of Wes (Wazzzer) bought what appeared to be a genuine Votex front splitter

Using work i had it collected and delivered to work, arriving on Thursday

So with a few hours spare I set to work

VW Stamp of approval

Needs a couple of coats more so I'll do that tomorrow.  Well pleased and an absolute bargain

Thanks goes to Miggie for spotting it, Wes for buying it for me and the numpty on Ebay who had no idea of its true value

Tested my auto-dmming mirror over the weekend and it works!! Just need to fit it now...only been 10 months

Also ordered me  Newsouth Indigo Boost Gauge  (http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=3784&xSec=142)

Hopefully have that by the weekend so I can test it out and see what PSI the turbo is running at  :nerd:

well as most of you know I did indeed head back to R-Tech only to find this

Picking up a potential replacement tomorrow night and I'm bidding on one on Ebay which is just down the road

I could end up with 3 useless intercoolers come the weekend  :undecided:

Still made 177bhp and 311lbs ft torque mind and that's still just the Spec 1 map.............

Had a couple of hours to spare this afternoon so thought it best to get around to fitting the Newsouth Boost Gauge I bought the other week

However I didn't buy a standard off the shelf pod as a) not a fan b) some are more expensive than the gauge itself!

My initial idea was to replace the drivers vent with a normal standard one.  Started taking things apart and then thought it might look a bit rubbish not having the vent light up so I started modifying my current bora vent to make the gauge fit

I'll take some more pictures in the daylight but here's a couple for now

Need to plumb it in the bay but I didn't have anything suitable to blank off the 'no buzz t piece so I'll hopefully find something in work

Right - finally sorted my boost gauge out so will be interesting to see what figures I can achieve - I have seen a peak of 27PSI though

Here's how its connected in the engine bay
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/DSC00104.jpg)

To Do List:

Fit auto-dimming mirror
Fit oil catch tank to stop oil building up in the intercooler
Renew suspension components - going for Bilstien B4's from Euro Car Parts and will renew top mounts etc whilst its all apart
Get a couple of dents removed from the bonnet and rear wheel arch (that's been there since i've owned the car )
Keep an eye out for some side skirts

Post by: Rhyso on 19 November 2009, 20:30
Oil catch tank ordered - should see that in a couple of weeks, thanks to Patch

Been keeping an eye on my boost gauge the last couple of days - seen it peak @ 27PSI and then hold 23PSI to the red line in 3rd and 4th gears and seen a healthy 23PSI @ 3K rpm in 6th

Car feels strong at the moment so its time to look at extracting a little bit more power  :lipsrsealed:
Title: Re: rhyso - dirty diesel power!
Post by: Rhyso on 04 December 2009, 17:30
Should have catch tank next week so hopefully fit that over crimbo

Also as most of you know my supposed gearbox problem was actually a rattling exhaust  :lipsrsealed:

So that was laid to rest with the fitment of this

Also in between that I've got a Spec 2 map from Nick - it now holds 24PSI to the redline - not a massive difference but the top end feels much stronger and its also more drivable at lower RPM's

Thankfully only the toe was out and although the figure shown isn't much apparently it was a lot worse but the guy working on it didn't save the original measurements

With everything in good order me and Dan headed on up for the rolling road weekend

R-Tech Charity meet

Looks like my actuator isn't performing as it should but it still performs OK in the real world  :undecided: although it doesn't feel as quick at the top end as it used due to the boost dropping off.  Topher (Chris) did a quick log of it on Saturday and its making all the right boost numbers so hopefully it means no leaks! Just a little frustrating as i seem so close yet so far to having the car running absolutely 100% spot on

Got up this morning with the intent of doing some jobs on the Golf

First was to wash approx 10 weeks of salt and grime off it!

Second was to replace the gaskets on my rear lights
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/DSC00184.jpg)

Thirdly was to actually attempt to install my autodimming mirror.......so off I went to pick up a few bits and pieces for the install.

Came back and went to remove the old mirror......

Result is I will be having a new tinted, rain sensing windscreen

Well the puddle light lasted long....looks like water sat in the mirror caused the connections to rust and the led's snap off....joy.

So i stripped the wiring out and not going to bother. I may in the future put some at the bottom of the door card  :undecided:

Anyhoo onto the saga that ensued this week.....

Last Friday en route to my parents my wheel bearing started whining like a good one so upon my return I booked in for a free check up at VW.  They confirmed it was the bearing along with the ball joint!! This was slightly worrying as the car passed its MOT literally 5 weeks previous with no mention of play in anything......

So with VW quoting roughly the same price as other local garages (go figure!), it was booked in for Thursday to replace both.  Waited most of the day Thursday until finally getting a call about 2pm that it was ready.  So picked it up, test drove it, noticed the tracking was out.  Phoned VW and confirmed if the tracking was done.  Apparently so to which I explained 'well, its out!'  OK drop it back and we'll take a look.

So dropped it back, they looked at it and confirmed that the NEW wheel bearing was knackered!!     So i had to leave the car there and hope they would sort it ASAP for Friday as it was Linzi's birthday and we planned to go out for the day

Thankfully I got a phonecall before 10am saying it was ready.  Picked it up and its now driving spot on

Until the next episode.....

As some of you know I headed off to R-Tech yesterday to find out why I was bleeding boost at the top end of the rev range - more specifically - the boost was dropping from 24PSI down to around 21-22PSI

Bare with me as its a bit of an essay but I'll hopefully add some pics when Photobucket behaves itself.

When I was at the RR day in January we had a look at the actuator and found it was sticking slightly so for yesterday Nick ordered in a Forge uprated actuator (yes I know how much I love Forge but)

So as well as having a turbo clean Nick fitted the new actuator along with the spring that was provided although Forge cocked up and supplied the wrong springs but luckily the springs from the 007P are the same and Nick had a few colours spare

Pic of the item in question - the spring nearest the actuator is what should be fitted - the ones next to it are what were supplied

So we started with what Forge provided - a yellow spring and here is what happened next......all the initial runs were done with my current Spec 2 map in place

Yellow spring - took it out and initially the car felt sluggish and unresponsive but the more I drove the more it seemed to free up.  With Topher in the passenger seat doing the logging we headed for a blast up and down the M69.  It become more apparent though that the more you drove it the freer it seemed to get, the car getting ever quicker although what was noticeable is that the car wasn't overboosting to 27PSI and then back to 24PSI.  Instead it was either
A) surging as in starting from 21PSI and increasing to 25psi
b) would boost straight up to 24psi and just sit there!

After a approximately a 40 mile round trip we headed back and went to try the next spring, the initial thoughts being that an even stiffer spring was needed........

Red Spring - this was fitted and the test drive last until the 2nd roundabout - conclusion; its TOO stiff - there was no power from 2000rpm and then at 2700rpm it unleashed holy hell but even then it only spiked to 20psi.  Needless to say it wasn't in for very long!

So the train of thought moved to a softer spring.....

Green spring - quite simply, if it wasn't for the fear of blowing my turbo across Hinckley I'd have this currently fitted.  Saw regular spikes of 35PSI    in the short tun we did and I'm fairly sure if my boost gauge could read higher it would have gone higher.  Quite simply it was the quickest the car has ever felt!  It would just boost and go.  Sadly though I quite like my current turbo and so does Nick and Topher so we headed back and put the Yellow spring back in and started playing with the mapping

First map was without being kind, not great.  Lots of smoke on part throttle, felt like the turbo was being strangled, and then clearing its throat.  So Nick started again from my original Spec 2 map

Nick took it for a drive first and came back not overly happy but thought I should decide for myself

This 2nd map was much improved, minimal pre-boost smoke and then gathering pace very quickly with minimal turbo lag, even on full throttle.

We did a couple of rolling road runs but all the runs were down on power and torque (averaged 170bhp and approx 290lbs ft torque in 4th gear) BUT I was now holding power where previously it was tailing off.

I set off home and for 90 miles it was superb right up until the point it threw me into limp mode   The reason behind this after chatting with Nick yesterday and this afternoon is simply this - the spring rate isn't suitable and therefore you get instances where the boost will surge as the actuator struggles to control what's being asked of it.  No amount of mapping will ever cure this simply because the fault is mechanical

So to conclude - a new standard actuator will be fitted in a couple of weeks and further testing in both mine and Nick's opinion needs to be done to try and find the correct spring rate to suit a mapped car.  It now seems obvious why the hybrid turbo builders currently do NOT recommend you fit this Forge actuator.

It's a bit of a shame if I'm totally honest - the potential is there, it just needs some more fine tuning and development work.  An ideal solution would be a spring rate between the green and yellow.  Nick said there are also some subtle differences on the rod of the standard and Forge actuator which could explain why it sticks initially  :undecided:

Hope that makes some sort of sense

Right - some updates

New standard actuator was fitted by Nick and Ben about 2 weeks ago - much better.  Needs some data logging and fine tuning but its 99% there :afro:

Need to sort out some weird steering issue so going to start by changing the track rod ends

Car is still in he bodyshop - hoping to pick it up tomorrow

Not much of an update really but here's what happened lately.....

Went back to R-Tech end of last month to have the actuator adjusted - duty cycle now sits at approx 76% @ 4000rpm and it seems to drive and pick up a little better

Had new tyres fitted but need the weights re-doing as they've stuck them on the outside near the spokes

Going to concentrate on getting the car looking as clean and tidy as possible so I've ordered a few new bits of trim which I should have for the weekend.  Also hoping that I can arrange something with our resident forum detailer about refreshing the paintwork

Also still got my catch tank to fit and to clean up the vac system so hopefully so nice updates with pics will be coming soon

Stay tuned if you can be bothered
