In a world run by Multi National Insurance Companies whose purpose in life is to part you from your money
and give as little in return, at least they've got one
thing right................................ they list the MK1 as a classic, nuff said.

'6 are you lost again? - surely you should be scanning the pages of WWW.Big-BargeGTI.co.uk. , not infiltrating the discerning world of the Mk1

It may have a little rust here and there, and no gear box at the moment but its only a weekend car, its for fun....  Cant have much fun in a barge.....  Do you rent it out for holiday excursions?  You could make back the money you loose in the car...   ;)

Post by: rustynuts on 27 November 2003, 01:01
Well i have both and my verdict is, I am glad i have got the Mk2 as the everyday car, too much stuff goes wrong on the Mk1, and it rusts and also not sure how I would fair in a crash compared to the Mk2. Also my Mk2 seems to handle better (Raceland kit on Mk2 and Boge kit and lower brace bar on Mk1), Although probably not a great deal in it to be honest.

I have got to do a lot of work on th Mk1 to get to a happy stage on it, like get the brakes improved but all in all i am glad I am not owning a Boeing Mk3 Gti/VR6 747 ;)

Yes your right MR VR6 Kid...  It mayewll belong in a museum but it does work on the road...  You've seen the old old b reg red busses in London, if they can drive so can I...  and dont forget where you roots are boy....  There would be no VR6 if it wasnt for the GTI....  As for a MK1 in a crash...  No way would you be alive if you were doing over 40mph...  Ben had a crash in his D-reg GTI, the copper informed him the d-reg golf was the first car to introduce the "Crumple Zone" do if you have a d-reg + your fine, if not, like myself, make sure its as quick and painless as possible, thats Y I go a little faster than most....  Helps haveing a stupidly quick car... ;D

I think the Valve was out in 86 - the reason Pug gave us the 1.9.

The Valve mk 2 is the definitive GTI

THE MK3 the Definitive boat - at least the VR6 shifted (but life jackets weren't supplied)

Well said slim....  Did you know they did actually build for MK3 as an amphibious car but the gov said its not allowed on the water due to it being too wide and not giving enough room to oncoming boats....  Used to scare the rowers...  :-* ;)

Why do we not have as many threads on the MK1 section regarding problems with our cars, as the mk2 and 3 section? is it because you boys get so many problems with 'em?

At the end of th day, the youngest Mk1 is 20 years old, the youngest Mk2 is 11. Law of diminishing returns says that there will be less Mk1's. Anyway we all know that Mk2's are far better built, but does it make it a better enthusiasts car.

I like both my Mk1 and Mk2, simple as that really.

I gotta say I love my MK2 but am thinking of getting a 3 door MK1 and building a big ass carbed 2 liter 16 vavle to drop between the struts.  Gotta fly in that light weight. I have a 2 liter valver from a MK3 sittng in the garage, now I just need to find a MK1 in good kit that isn't an outrageous amount of money and I can get started at it.

Hehe, the waits worth it though.
Stripped down his mainshaft a couple of days ago and it looks like we'll go for a new 3rd/4th synchro, new springs and keys........should fix that problem. Tempted to change the 2nd gear synchro whilst I'm in there. His first gear isn't standard, the cog is smaller  :o

Can you get all the bits for a rebuild? where from? i heard they are expensive.
Title: Re:sure you don't want a mk2? go on, kick me!
Post by: richandhazel on 29 November 2003, 14:12
Thats a good point, I assumed they were available from VW and was going to call them next week. Is that not the case?

I don't know, thats why i was asking. Modulators gearbox was shagged last year, we just put a recon box on for a few hundred quid.

Only one way to find out. I'll get the part numbers together over the weekend and call VW next week.
I'll let you know how I get on..........
Title: Re:sure you don't want a mk2? go on, kick me!
Post by: golfvr6 on 29 November 2003, 14:24
Good luck. I get a bad feeling they might be expensive, as this how these rebuild companies make their money.
Title: Re:sure you don't want a mk2? go on, kick me!
Post by: richandhazel on 29 November 2003, 14:28
Wouldn't the rebuild companies still need to source their parts from VW . All I'm endeavouring to do is cut out the labour charge for doing the job.
Title: Re:sure you don't want a mk2? go on, kick me!
Post by: golfvr6 on 29 November 2003, 14:33
I suppose it depends where the rebuild companies source there bits from. Isn't it a pain in the arse doing a rebuild? i thought you had to measure all the clearances and adjust them with shims. TAKE SOME PICS!

So is working on gearboxes quite and easy thing to do, my Mk1's box has gone in a similar way on the syncro's 2, 3 and 4.

Might practise on my old shagged Mk2 box.
Title: Re:sure you don't want a mk2? go on, kick me!
Post by: mk1 on 29 November 2003, 17:31
I worked for a g/box reconditioners for a while, most recon g/boxes just needed bearings and synchro's. If it was more than that (gears etc) they were not viable and the good parts used for spares. We used to buy a lot of low milage g/boxes out of crashed cars with broken cases for most of the internal parts.

Once you price the bearings, seals and gaskets put some labour on, I wonder how they earn any money out of it  ;).
Steve.
