Bec, feel free to move this if in the wrong place but seeing as its 100% focussed towards detailing I thought I'd post here:-
Thought I'd share this with you guys.
We broight the house a year ago and I've always been unhappy with the fact that I couldn't get around the cars whilst I had the doors shut etc, so last week we set to convertiong the two up and over doors to one sectional 5.5mtr door.
This is how the garage was when we got the house. A friend of mine does contract flooring so he did the floor before we moved in. I set it up with my newage cabinets and created a gym area. This never got used so I sold that and put towards the project.

My cabinets have been moved a few times and are now ion their final resting place.
First job was to remove the pillar and install a new steel.

We then got the loft boarded out, with lighting in the loft and power.

Then got the door fitted and walls painted

And the almost finished result:-

Jobs still to do:-
Plaster the ceiling (Saturday with 38mm insulated boards)
Have the floor repaired where the pillar was removed (TBC)
Internal/external lighting (Tuesday night)
Order and install a 2nd radiator
Then wait for the builders to finish the driveways, improve my drainage at the bottom of the drive (doesn't take snow foam away ).

I was tempted to move this thread from this section and delete forever, but only because I am consumed with jealousy!!!
What a great conversion and transformation. Well worth the effort. And those cars don't look too bad either.
The question is do you ever go back in the house?
Nice one Neil. :afro:
-
Thanks Bec, to be honest I think that Bev only approved of the work so that I'd stay out of the house!
-
It's even heated. Funking hell. :nerd:
-
-
Can I move in? It's probably not far off the size of my house! Looks fantastic Neil, the green eyed monster in me is strong right now
-
Tremendous Neil, looks great!

Cheers, i'm really happy with it. Just hoping the plasterer doesn't mess it up too much!

Cheers mate.

Holy crap! Is that a BMW BMW i8? Ok, where do you live so I can come and "test drive" that gorgeous car!!!!!
Yup we're all jealous. Definitely better than the gym.

Did you get an engineer to spec the steel? With only 440mm masonry returns, plus a door opening so close in the side wall, there is little in the way of buttressing on the corners. I would have specified a steel wind post, bolted into the corner on each side to beef the structure up a bit more.

Staffordshire and happy to take you for a spin!

Hi Steve
Yes cost me £250 for drawings and nearly a grand for the steel due to its specification. A friend of mine heads up my councils building control team so used guys he recommended to me to be on the safe side. The steel guy said he's never made steel like it before and the steel is sat on pad stones too.
Cheers
Neil

I'm sure it will be fine Neil, but my concern would not be with the beam, or the padstones it's sat on, but the potential for deflection in the corners of the building. I would have either designed a 'goal post' frame or fixed steel angles into the internal corners to stiffen the building up.
I suppose most things have to be belt and braces designed these days. Years ago building were put up and altered with little thought to these things, and they're still standing.

No worries and thanks for sharing your insight. The project began with a neighbour "i'll sort that for you" but I was never going to go that route. At the end of the day if the roof caves in the people who have signed off the design will have a huge problem

Don't forget to wear a hard hat and Hi-Vis vest when detailing.

I know Dubbers got me paranoid now!
-
No need to be paranoid Neil, it would have fallen down by now if it was going to. Having said that, you haven't loaded up the loft up and we haven't had any high winds...yet.
Sorry, I'll keep quiet now.

Yeah we have on both counts, so fingers crossed if its gonna fall down it'll be when Bevs car is in the garage and then I can replace the Bug with a Clubsport, but not with cr@ppy wheels!

"Once an architect............"
I share an office with an architect and everything is viewed with the 'architect's eye'.

I hope you don't mean Pretorias.
-
They aint Pretorias, im sure???
I'm really hoping that the wheels that have been on all of the white car images are made available.

Sorry, I was referring to this article (below). Prets in all these images (towards bottom of the page), but yes it's been shown with an alternative wheel which hopefully is the ClubSport wheel???

I was getting kicked under the table in the restaurant last weekend for having a wandering eye. I was looking at the jointing details on the glue-lam beams.

Haha, how romantic. Hope you enjoyed your rare child freewheel end btw.
It's unavoidable, if that's your profession. Same with many others. My partner can't go past a building without commenting on the paintwork, finish etc.
Myself, coming from a fine art background, tend to view the world through an invisible 'picture frame'. I also see things in a very abstract way, that others struggle to see or understand.
