This might sound a bit crazy but im about to start my project tomorow starting with taking the original engine out . ill be selling the engine to fund parts that ill need but when i come to list the engine for sale do i list it as a gti ?? how can i tell if it isa gti by looking at the engine?? any pointers would be good guys . thanx

Which one does it look like? first pic is a GTI, second one is not. :huh:

That would mean it is a 1.1 or 1.3

well thats totally threw me its on the logbook as a 1.8 ill get the engine code today if that will tell ?

It will help but if it is 100% the 2nd picture it can not be a 1.8

Be interesting to see the car and engine if you can get some pics up.. also, if possible, see if you can get the engine code on here too.

bottom one looks to be a 1,3 , same engine was in mine

got the engine out today only took 3 and half hours i dont know where to look for the engine code its not in the same place as a mk4 i took lots of pictures aswell but dont knoiw how to upload them to here erm if you pm me your email address ill forward them

im soooo confused lol looking at the picture again its the 1st picture because the plugs are at the front and the alternater is to the left everything is the same as pic 1 but my engine has a carbarettor so im thinking its a straight 1.8L

Or a 1.5 / 1.6 as well as a 1.8

I think they only did the auto on the 1.6, what cc is shown on your log book.

hey thanks for the link i tried to do it and wouldent let me ! erm on the logbook 1.8 this gets worse guys ive just txt a thing on TV that checks car data and this is the reply i got

WTF?? IVE GOT LAST YEARS MOT CIRTIFICATE! FEEL ILL JUST GOING TO RING DVLA
Thats not good, no vic check means it should not be back on the road.

no it looks like a ligit MOT cirtificate bought it off ebay to do for summer i got the logbook and mot so i dont understand

ahh ebay, the worst place to buy a project :grin:
only way you can be sure is phone the dvla and see if they say it should have been crushed years ago :grin:

yeah will be ringing them mon morn . suppose if it was taken off the road there shouldent still be a logbook kicking about and definatlly not last years mot but ill see monday

had DVLA on the blower this morn the car is sound so all good to go now with the project ! bum holes stop'd twitching now. engines out all bottom half of engine bay as been undersealed today . going to prime top half then re paint white ready for engine to go in !

Cool, what did the DVLA have to say about the HPI records then?

they said theres no bad history with the car and if it had been a cat C,D then that gets logged on the log book v5 cirtificate or sometimes they hold the logbook until the car goes for a VIC check so my guess it was a crap txt thing that i did so my advise do a good hpi check not a 3 quid txt thingy !! i have the logbook back and all is ok !
