Detailing / Re: Ceramic Coating options

I was thoroughly unimpressed by the GTechniq coating I had on my last. It didn’t performed well at all, despite proper maintenance. I have a Gyeon coating on this one, and it’s 10 times better. Better beading, easier cleaning, more gloss, and lasting much better.

Interesting to hear your experience with Gtechniq is pretty much the same as mine. I be sticking with old school waxes and sealants though, rather than trying a different brand of ceramic coating products.

What’s the best solution for replacing the ‘GTI’ logo on the performance pack callipers?

How about these?

Golf mk3 / Re: Can MK3 GTI sunroofs be repaired/reconditioned?
« Last post by Mieses on Today at 07:42 »
Hello,
So I bought my MK3 and a sunroof from a 1999 Ford Galaxy with the motor for next to nothing, given the low demand...
The Phase 1 Ford Galaxy is indeed a Sharan clone. VW Group sunroofs from this period fit the MK3, which allows for a broader parts search.
After diagnosis, I might not need to replace it after all. There are no broken parts because I can operate the mechanism with the emergency key. But I'm going to completely disassemble it to grease it. However, there's a problem with the motor cutting out when I try to slide the roof.

Hi, It started with my mk7 when I had some marks on the door I noticed after buying the car from dealer prep so took it to a detailer as was not brave enough to do heavy polishing and what I was trying had not removed them. At the time they were trialing their own ceramic coating brand and just found it so easy to clean and maintain after that.

For the R I went back and got the accrediated version applied and it’s so easy to look after. Just a quick top up every 6 months with their sealant and it’s still beeding 7 years later. For me it’s definitely been worth the money I paid. I guess it’s personal preference.

Out of interest, is there a particular reason that you go with coatings over sealants/waxes?

I use the latter and honestly prefer it.

I’m with you @Nino - it’s waxes and sealants for me.

I can understand that some people might be ‘time poor’ and / or not have off road space to clean / detail their car, so they choose to use the services of a professional detailer with purpose-built premises and get their car ceramic coated. Ceramic coatings are reputed to have better longevity and superior durability to a sealant or wax, so in theory should reduce the time (and frequency?) needed for subsequent car washing activities. Downsides of professionally applied ceramic coatings for me would be the initial cost, the need to get the car periodically inspected and the coating reapplied / topped up if necessary (presumably at additional cost) to maintain the coating’s warranty, and some of the questionable warranties provided with these products.

I did initially ceramic coat (Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour) the alloys on my current car when I got it; I followed the instructions to the letter in terms of pre-application prep, application of the product and curing time. In all honesty, I was quite disappointed with the results - durability wasn’t great and IMHO no better than some dedicated wheel sealants that I’ve used in the past. I’ve subsequently gone back to using a wheel sealant.

For the past 10 years or so years, my ‘go-to’ wax / sealants have been either Collinite 845 Insulator Wax or Fusso Coat 12 Month’s Wax (actually a synthetic sealant). I’ve found both of those products give very good durability and are good value price wise too. I’m not sure of Fusso’s 12 month claim though as I usually wax or seal my car’s paintwork every 6 months. I don’t find waxing or sealing my car twice a year to be a hardship as it’s something I enjoy doing .

Golf mk8 / convenience window opening feature
« Last post by MarkHowells on 23 May 2025, 20:29 »
Well, last week the convenience window opening feature stopped working. I am pretty sure that I could close the windows when locking the car by keeping my finger on the key fob lock button. I noticed that the convenience window opening feature was disabled in the settings so I enabled it. That sorted out the problem........well for a few days when it this feature disabled itself again,

I googled it and tried the two things that I found on the internet.

I set the convenience window opening feature to "all windows" and it worked again, but the next day it disabled itself again.

I tried the second thing which was to door an "all windows one touch" reset andthe feature worked again for a couple of days.

This morning when I started the car a load of alarms initiated and the car seemed to lose connection. The rear camera wouldn't work, the radio didn't work, it lost functions such as parking sensors, road sign recognition, lane assist and loads more. Anyway, when I finished work today and got in the car everything was back to normal, except that the convenience window opening feature disabled itself again. Did another one touch window reset and all seems fine.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or anything similar?

Now now, you obviously didn’t read the OP, I didn’t apply for a logbook, I wrote a letter to DVLA, asking them to pass my details on to him (not illegal)

I never paid for a logbook, neither did I fill in a V62, just a letter stating it’d sat there for months, I wanted to buy it, and if it was possible to send my details on to the guy, that isn’t a criminal offence.

I didn’t expect anything back, let alone a V5C.

Now don’t be a dick about this mate,  put yourself in my position….

1. You wrote a letter giving your details and hoping to hear something back from the owner! (Not illegal)
2. You receive a V5C back, you are now the registered keeper (RK) (not the owner, as the V5C states, just the person responsible for taxing it)
3. It’s sat on a public road, no Tax, no MOT. If that thing gets clamped, you are the RK and are responsible for the fines that’s go with it.

Would you have just left it there?

I had to get in it to make the contact with the guy, I found a phone number and called him the following day and spoke to him, he was surprised as I was that DVLA messed up and didn’t even contact him to let have my details. If he had said, no I want it, I’d have put the car back Into his name and that would have been that.

There was no damage to the locks, glass or anything. Instead he said he wanted something for it, which  I was obviously happy to sort out, he told me where to get the key from, (his mates) and I’ve also paid to take the private plate off it for him, again not the work of a thief!

All the calls were recorded and dealt with through WhatsApp. Again not the work Of a thief,

I’m 42yrs of age, a husband, a dad to 2 girls, and a business owner! One thing I am not is a thief!!! I’ve done everything properly!

Don’t think you’ve done everything legally as you had no idea who’s car it was so if a logbook just appears you should have contacted dvla again to correct the issue

And you never knew if the owners contact details would have been in the car to justify opening a lock fast place again a criminal offence

And how would you feel if someone applied for contact information for your car and ended up with a log book  and just thought hey let’s break in see if we can find more details about the owner
