I think both these statements are true- modern oils degrade only very slowly over time, but fresh oil is better.

I do around 7k annually in the golf- an annual service is sufficient imo.

So what should you do with an older engine doing low mileage and with modern oils? I will be doing my 3rd oil change in 2 years and 5k miles in my 32 year old Pug.

Probably too much, but it makes me feel good!

Good thing you brought it up, as this week I changed the oil & filter in the mk5 which was 12 months old but it only covered 500 miles, the oil was very black though so I'm glad I did it. Even used my Spendlocal card to pay for it so it was free!

Yeah, mine is black when I’ve changed it, though it looks pretty clean on the dipstick.
How many miles on your mk5?

Along the same lines as preventative oil changes what does everybody think about using injector cleaner regularly?

It was always on my must have list so it gets babied a bit too much haha

For anyone that runs premium fuel (97+)  I don’t think it’s necessary, the fuel has cleaning additives in it. Although I did periodically use a bit of Millers EcoMax in the common rail diesel GTD and it was on BP Ultimate.

Either way it does no harm anyway, I know a lot of boys in the south of Ireland use the octane boosters for the petrols but they only get 95 octane down there.

Oil every and filter 6 months irrespective of mileage, currently on 12,400 in3 years.
Interested in the injection cleaner - might read up in that (though I only ever user Shell V-Max at 99 RON)

Once a year, which is about 9k.

'Long life' 2 year/24k servicing was a terrible idea by VAG, plenty of blocked oil strainers on the 20v/TFSI's, but yearly/12k servicing is more than enough.

Interesting point. I have just used some on my mk6 gti as it has had to be filled with 95 Octane for the last few fills because that is all that was available. It is on 88k and subjectively it seems to have improved the consumption. May have been the oil and filter change just done though? Not a regular user of injector cleaner.

Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.
