Tbh, I'm not sure how much has been lost as I haven't noted at any point as to where the level was, but it was higher as now bang on minimum. I'll top it up in the morning and it'll be in the workshop on Friday to be checked.

I don’t think I’d top it up if your car’s going into the workshop on Friday, unless it drops to below minimum the minimum mark. If it’s at the minimum level, the workshop can see for themselves that it’s dropped below the ‘normal’ level.

Got my car booked in to have the under bonnet sound insulation replaced and to investigate coolant loss.

The tech I spoke to thought the insulation shrinks due to dealers jet washing under the bonnet, the insulation dries from the heat of the engine causing the shrinkage. No idea if he's right or not but seems plausible. He was also the one who suggested getting the engine checked for coolant loss when he saw the bottle of G12 in my hand. Although I've had a couple of issues with them generally they have been very helpful.

The comment on the insulation sounds a bit dodgy, mine has never been power washed under the bonnet and it’s shrunk

Please us know the outcome, Watts. My guess is airlock.
The impression I get from reading about this online is that the thermostat housing leak issue is much less common with late 7.5s.
I also wonder whether many have been changed needlessly??

They've already seen the level so they know it has dropped. They will check for evidence of leaks.

I think he was being genuine but it was nothing more than a guess. Thing is they are not all shrinking so that would suggest some external influence but who knows. If mine shrinks again then I'll definitely know it's not from washing.

Please us know the outcome, Watts. My guess is airlock.

Will do. That's what I think too but since they offered to check it out I'd have been daft not to let them.

More dealer BS. Imagine, these numpties actually work on your cars.

Mine has never been washed and is now held in place with a couple of cable ties.

Agree - dealer BS.

There are mk7 owners on other forums who have never let the dealer wash their cars - not even as part of PDI when the car was new. Their under bonnet insulation has also suffered from shrinkage.

Today I caused my car to have a breakdown and need to be recovered. Yes, that's right, I caused it. I feel like such a doughnut although the words I used to describe myself at the time were a wee bit stronger and not repeatable here.

So, what did I do?

Or in this case, didn't do.

I topped up my coolant and forgot to replace the cap

So, once topped up I popped out for some petrol and struck it lucky on the first attempt at the local Tesco. Only a 1.5 mile round trip so not enough to cause a problem. Then after lunch, the OH wanted to go shopping, so we got 3 miles down the road when I noticed steam coming from under the bonnet. I pulled over straight away and switched off, I knew what the problem was going to be. Coolant all over the place. Couldn't find the cap anywhere so I ordered another whilst we awaited the arrival of the RAC - 3.5 hours. Luckily my OH was very understanding and didn't get angry or upset. Got towed home on a bar so I was steering which was odd but I did manage 50.1 mpg, given the engine wasn't running I expected better!

So my own stupidity and perhaps a sign that the old gray matter is becoming unreliable?

At least you found the source of your coolant leak, the lid was off
