Title: Rear brake pad/disc recommendations
Post by: Ratski on 26 September 2021, 12:51
Soon about to attempt rear pads and discs. Looking forward to the added excitement of figuring out e brake challenge.

What is a good manufacturer to go with ? Quite a few options on both halfords and ecp.
Pagid, Bosch etc etc. What do we recommend.
Thanks.rich

Brembo discs and pads.

I would second Brembo, always been really good for me.

I think you need VAGCOM or OBDEleven to get the brakes into the service position? Sounds fun.

Yeah I have obdeleven. Just need to figure out if I need Batt charger also..

I assume I'm ok to just fit the brembo to rear and leave front stock pads / discs in place as they have plenty of wear left. I.e don't need a full set front and rear. ?

yup, no reason to change the fronts.

I think they probably advise having a battery charger hooked up so that the battery doesnt drain down below a preset V whilst youve got the rear calipers in kit form and apply the handbrake by default as some sort of safety feature.

Cheers. That was my thoughts..
Has anyone done it with obdeleven..looks straight forward enough. My only query is once you wind calipers back through the obd tool do you leave ignition on or are you safe to turn off without calipers winding back in.

Keep a trickle charger on it "just in case". If it gets to a certain level it will auto engage the handbrake to "secure" the car. If this happens whilst your rear calliper if off the car then it will basically actuate until the internals of the calliper piston fall out. Then it is a whole world of fun trying to put all of that together again.

No you need to set the car into service mode. Otherwise as soon as the ignition is off / key removed they will activate again.

Ok got it thanks.
Don't think the obdeleven has this 'service' mode you mentioned. Looked on the app and it says ok to turn ignition off once caliper wound back so fingers crossed !

Just replaced mine with Brembo from ECP.
£86 all in due to August BH deal.
I've carista and very straight forward. Once in service postion turn off ignition. No charger needed. You can always look at battery status before you atrt.
As usual watch the torx bolt on the disc & the inboard pads have a spring on them. I didn't take notice so had to do them again.
All sorted in about 90mins. So an hour at most really.

I have done it with OBDEleven, no battery charger either. Ignition on, then using OBDEleven wind back, turned ignition off, changed pads, ignition on, wind back in then repeat for the other side of the car.

Thx for advice. Brembo from ecp got delivered today. I've gone for discs as well. Has anyone done recently that can advise how hard the M14 spline caliper carrier bolts were to do. They look a real pain. Will probably refit the old ones (assuming I can get them out) although some people recommend replacing for new.

I did mine last year in a 2013 GTi and they were fine (without any power tools). I re-used the old bolts after inspection, cleaned and lubricated generously with thread lock. I think they are torque to yield bolts from the factory, but they looked in good order so i re-used. If you wanted to be proper you can order from the stealer

I think you only need to remove them if you have vented rear discs (PP) mine's not so discs came off without removing carrier

Ok so some feedback.
Completed pads and discs (rear) today.
Didn't use Batt charger
Caliper 7mm slider bolts were tricky. You probably need a stubby 7mm hex socket as brake line gets in the way.
M14 spline bolts that carrier on were very difficult. You definitely need a decent breaker bar for these. I suspect it woul d be fairly straight forward on a ramp but working off a jack made things tricky.

Obdeleven was the tool I used. Follow instructions on there and all seemed fine.
