Have there been any reviews yet? Let's face it, it's going to be the best GTI yet as that's what VW do....but if anyone has seen a review of it being actually driven I'd be interested to see it!
Thanks in advance.

Car magazine has a review this month. It reckons 6th gear is a bit tall. But otherwise it's awesome.
-
There will be a few real ones on here in June.
-
Thanks chaps. Yes I have Car Magazine, less of a review and more of an old man rambling; plus it talked about the car on the track for the last third of the "review" which is irrelevant IMHO!!
-
Quote from the mag:
Georg Kacher states that 6th gear on the DSG has been lengthened to the point of being way too tall compared to 5th gear for improved fuel economy. I don't see this as a bad thing overall, but on a DSG that shifts into 6th at the earlier possible time could be anoying (think Golf R32/Golf R with DSG).
-
I don't have a problem with a tall top gear. It makes sense for there to be a gear that does most of the 'non accelerating' cruising speed work with most efficiency.
If you don't want the car to be efficient, stick it into S or use the paddles or stick your foot down. I can't see the problem there.
-
I agree. All the hard work will have been done in the previous gears, 6th is effectively a cruising gear anyway. If you haven't beaten the person you're racing by the time you've reached 6h gear you're not doing it right!

The guys from VW Vortex are reviewing the GTI next week with a test drive...
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?6017523-Going-to-Golf-7-GTI-First-Drive (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?6017523-Going-to-Golf-7-GTI-First-Drive)
-
They have a 3 page driven test in the new EVO mag.
They test a manual GTi with the performance pack.
A few quotes :-
Impressive progressive steering.
With ACC in sport mode the GTi remains flat and agile with eye opening speed through corners.
The LSD offers impressively strong traction out of corners.
The new car can make quite extraordinary progress on the road.
The revised EA888 engine with variable valve lift is less engaging than that of the previous model...it's a very efficient generator of power but not one that particularly excites.
The Mk7 GTi is better in almost every way than the MK 6 ... but it's just not as impressive ... the main issue is the GTi's ability to excite ... it's not a car I wanted to drive again soon.
Verdict :
+ Brilliantly resolved, fine dynamics
- Not as adjustable or fun as it should be
evo rating **** stars out of five
-
The Mk7 GTi is better in almost every way than the MK 6
Great finds on the reviews. The above quote is good enough for me!!
-
Exactly why I've gone for the GTD. I found my previous 2012 Scirocco 2.0 Tsi DSG boring and I'm sure the latest Golf GTI will be the same. My opinion sorry. It's not an exciting engine
-
Exactly why I've gone for the GTD. I found my previous 2012 Scirocco 2.0 Tsi DSG boring and I'm sure the latest Golf GTI will be the same. My opinion sorry. It's not an exciting engine
Because the slower diesel will be better?? ;D The ONLY reason imo that anyone would go for a GTD over a GTI is economy which is no bad thing but buying a diesel because you think the petrol engine is boring is daft! Perhaps a different marque would have been better? And cheaper!
-
Diseasal drivers saying that petrol engines are boring?

Go and chuck some soot.
-
I hope this thread doesn't detract and become a discussion about diesel vs petrol. I'm more interested in member views on the points highlighted in quotes from the reviews please.
-
You are of course entitled to your opinion, which is why you're purchasing the diesel. But saying the GTD will be more exciting than the GTI is the funniest thing I've heard in ages
Back on topic, you could call most cars boring and lacking in excitement if you wanted to find an angle to support that theory. A 911 C4 is dull as you like compared to a 911 C2 because the 4 wheel drive makes it 'too safe' as the car corrects nearly every driver error.....But it's still an awesome car!!
-
How many of us are driving these cars to the limit like evo testers. If we want our 'back ends' sliding out round roundabouts, we'll buy a cater ham, or a vauxhall. It seems as tho th new golf does everything I want it to, and the alternatives for the money don't.
-
wow he touched a raw nerve with you lot
glad I decided not to order one, EVO know whats great and what does not hit the sweet spot of fun. the mark 7 GTI is going too be good but not great

I live my life between 1-3k revs which is where my Sciricco was boring and the GTD will flourish. Have any of you lived with big power diesels?

Big power diesels? What's that got to do with the GTD?
-
Lol I mean punchy diesels. The 4 pot I did love was our old TT-S cab....full of drama

Fair enough, the mk7 has got considerably more torque than the outgoing model so in theory should perform a little better in the lower rev ranges but between 1-3k says mile munching to me where the GTD will beat the GTI hands down, we all have our reasons for choosing what we do but performance wouldn't be the reason i'd buy a diesel.
-
GTD is the perfect real-world car. Similar in success to the original Fabia VRS
-
GTD is the perfect real-world car. Similar in success to the original Fabia VRS
The GTD is the perfect real world car - if you live your life between 1-3k revs i.e. for you (as you've stated). Personally I get past 3k revs as soon as possible, as id rather have some fun in a car rather than pootling along like a granny - hence why I have ordered a GTI!
-
Ooh play nicely now boys, or this will turn into a Derv v Petrol debate
-
Just healthy banter/discussions! Each to their own and it would be very dull if we all liked & bought the same car!
Bottom line is the GTD & GTI are shaping up to be great cars!

Exactly right IMHO ... journos always review cars as if they were on a track all the time, where in reality actual owners are looking for a great all rounder for all types of trips in all types of weather. The MK 6 Golf R got very similar types of comments, but for me it was the best car I've ever owned.
A few more quotes from EVO to get back on thread
I didn't know about this one :-
If you opt for the performance pack you get a choice LSD settings (normal or sport)
"We'd tick the option for the Performance Pack (PP - £980) with which you also get the clever electronically controlled LSD. Also tick the Adaptive Chassis Control (£795) with Driver Profile Selection (standard) giving you control over ACC, throttle mapping, steering mode and on PP cars, whether you want the diff in Normal or Sport mode."
"The most notable improvement to the engine is in mid-range torque. The PP GTi delivers 258lbft - the same as the MK 6 R and 51lb ft more than the Mk 6 GTI"
"There's very little kickback and grip levels are easy to detect both on the way into and out of corners. This allows properly committed driving; you can attack the corners vey hard and drive through them without fear of sudden oversteer."
"The Jacaro tartan seats are comfy, the driving position relaxed but multi adjustable, the dials are clear and the infotainment excellent. There's little wind or road noise, and the ride in "Normal" is relaxed. "

Cheers Jonny, i downloaded Evo to my ipad yesterday only to discover it was last months!! :embarrassed:

New online review by Steve Sutcliffe on Autocar!
http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/volkswagen/golf-gti/first-drives/2013-volkswagen-golf-gti-performance-edition-first-drive
He's very impressed....
-
Quote
"But there’s really only one thing you need to know about the latest GTI to understand why it’s as peachy to drive as it is. The chap who signed off the chassis of this car used to work for Porsche until VW gave him a new set of overalls with the words ‘Golf GTI’ emblazoned on them. And when he worked for Porsche, his last job was to sign off a car called the ‘997’ GT3 RS.
So right there, you can see the pedigree that the new GTI contains – because the 997 GT3 RS was one of the best-handling Porsche road cars that there has ever been. Amen."

Tbh I think we're gonna get a lot of conflicting reviews in the next few weeks depending on which magazine is covering the review and more importantly which car journo is doing the review. I like to believe that Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar gives a fairly good balanced 'honest' opinion, whereas the likes of say EVO magazine are more biased towards more "driver focused" cars more suitable for 'Hooning' around in.
I agree the GTi isn't the most 'exciting' car in the hot hatch market... If I had wanted "Exciting" I would have purchased say the Renault Megane 265 Cup, Vauxhall Astra VXR or BMW M135i. But exciting doesn't always mean everyday usability, which is where the GTi fits in. I like the fact that its 'Quick' but not blindingly quick you loose your licence in a flash. I like the fact that it looks handsome, but in an understated way... Not too 'Shouty' but still means business when viewed in the rear view mirror.
I've driven a lot of quote: "Exciting" cars in my time, but all have been compromised in many ways eg teeth shattering ride quality, eye watering fuel consumption & bank breaking service costs & consumables. They're alright to drive when you're in the mood for a bit of excitement (which isn't always eg nipping down to the shops or taking the kids to school). However my current Mk 6 GTi offers the best of BOTH worlds which epitomises why it's such a great car in its own right.

Auto Express verdict is now up: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/63631/vw-golf-gti-performance-pack.
5 Stars - "Volkswagen has done a fabulous job with the new Golf GTI. It’s comfortable, fast and, when fitted with the Performance Pack, it serves up enough fun to satisfy any hot hatch buyer. Factor in more generous standard equipment, lower running costs and the kind of evergreen desirability that transcends all demographics, and what we have here is the best all-round hot hatch ever created."
They've got a red one, which looks great in those pictures.

Great review

I know it's only wishful thinking, but wouldn't it be great if the GTI and GTD models came with the Cloth / Leather / Alcantera trim as shown in the Autoexpress review. Pretty sure they'll come with 100% cloth, but those seats do look real nice.
Also, I've only just noticed that the GTI / GTD steering wheel is totally different to the standard models. At first I though it was just the stitching colour and the small logo on the lower spokes, but not having had a closer look, the airbag is much smaller and rounder than the lesser models, which makes me wonder if the steering wheel itself is slightly smaller in diameter ? It looks like the buttons on the spokes are actually larger than other models (see below)

Also, anyone else noticed that it only seems to the be the GTI / GTD's that have an extra button on the lower left side of the handbrake (left row, very bottom) for traction control (TCS) on/ off - all other models don't seem to have this and need to turn the TCS on or off from the infotainment screen. Maybe VW feel that the performance models need access to this much quicker ?

The way that looked in certain light, it looks like Oryx White to me. I'd have to see one in the flesh, but it looks a bit dull to me, and the paint sample I've seen in the showroom has too much iridescence in it for my liking.

It's Oryx white. It looks dead on like the Geneva motor show gti (3 door). It's a stunning colour I think. I held both Candy white and Oryx white colour plates side by side and there is a big difference.
However my dealer said no one ever chooses it cos of the price. Then again, he said the same about ACC and couldn't show me an example of a keyless entry car either lol.

Beautiful....
Yes, the colour can be changed, this will have to be the last thing to change
Colour changed to Onyx now. Can't be bothering my dealer with any more changes now!
Still not sure if I made the right choice, that colour is a seriously expensive option, I mean - paint that costs the same as the performance upgrades!
But feeling good about it!

You won't regret it mate. I showed about 5 friends both the carbon steel grey and oryx white colour videos and everyone said oryx white.
It is a lot of money no doubt. But think of it as another £430 not £930 cos you were going for a metallic paint anyway.
Have a look at a close up

Well it will certainly assure you a bit of exclusivity, as I can't see many people popping a grand for paint work. Fair plays to you.

God I love Oryx White but I can't stomach shelling out £930 squid for it

i was wrong  I will be placing an order ASAP

Actually I am trying to think of it as more or less free as I removed Winter pack last week. So cost increase is not going to be that much overall.
That close up shot looks amazing. I am fully excited now.

Very witty. A good read.
In other news: That Oryx White does look remarkably nice and will really come into its own in bright sunlight or under street lights BUT I still can't get over the cost. I think if I see one parked up I'll just make sure I park at the other end of the car park!!
Tough choice.

This review just gave me a good feel for the car. Really liked it.
At 3.15 he says DCC is standard? Maybe for the US market? Who knows!
-
Very good review, just loving that car in the white, be it pure or oryx, just suits it so well. Also starting to feel better about going for the PP now. It's the wait that's killing me and making me all indecisive, just gimme the damn car already, lol

Yep, gotta love the Americans for getting excited - if I couldn't wait before now I'm gagging to get the car after watching that - it's gonna be at least 3 more months isn't it....

What a car! WOW. Looks totally amazing in 3 door white. I hope that was transit white and not fancy oryx in the video. Anyone know just by watching?

It looks standard to me.

Is hard to tell, especially in a video with wildly varying white balance. Both the pure white and oryx white paint samples I looked at look very similar from a distance, especially in bright light. Thee will be times and lighting conditions where the oryx white comes into it's own, but I didn't buy a GTI to have it shimmer in subtle shades of iridescent pinks and greens!
Edit: Looking at the video again, I'd say that was oryx white.

$26000?! That's less than £17000!
Lucky bastards.
Funny that Europeans have to pay far more for European cars than Americans do.

Aye, but you need to factor in local sales tax, and the relative specifications. It does suck though, but it's the same with technology over there. The answer is simple, move, but I'd rather not live in the US thanks! ;)

I wish it was simple! I'd have moved there years ago!!

Do it. The money you save on buying your GTI over there will more than cover the cost of a ticket ;) Now you have no excuse!

For those twitter lovers out there, @carlaunchlive are currently testing the new GTI and have been tweeting pics - interesting as they are unedited pics.

I've got to be honest, if thats a LHD car it's tilted the wrong way so it's more than likely a fault with the knob and the disc on top has been put in on the piss? ???
-
Sounds like Tiff Needell is also down in the south of France blasting round the Paul Ricard circuit in the new GTi... I expect the 2nd round of reviews to come out soon. Wonder if they're shooting a piece for fifth gear??
-
Hope so, he knows his stuff. Am hoping it will be on the new series of Top Gear too, although Clarkson will say its better in every way than every other GTI but feels too safe, doesn't feel mental enough etc etc

Autocar Ford Focus ST vs Golf GTi preview
"This week Steve Sutcliffe pits the mighty Ford Focus ST against the new VW Golf GTi in a showdown designed to crown a new hot hatch champion. The verdict is as surprising for the margin of victory as the result itself!"
Wonder what that implies?
-
Well, it's either very close swinging in favour of the Focus ST, or the GTI beats it by a landslide! To be honest, I care not...the ST is prettier than a normal Focus, but too much styling going on, both inside and out. I'll take the GTI any day of the week.
-
The answer is in the description.
By saying the 'mighty ford focus ST...' and then saying its a surprising result implies just that. Plus Steve loved the GTI ;)
-

Couldn't agree more. I reckon the new GTi will obliterate the Focus ST... I use to own a ST and it was a wonderfully balanced car with enormous power!!! (Especially with the Superchips Bluefin installed). Biggest problem was the massive torque steer!!! You were constantly fighting the steering wheel which made it quite a handful. With 247bhp!!!! in the latest Focus ST I can see that torque steer will be an even bigger problem!!! Hence why the GTi will win the test!!! (I hope)
-
That's how I kinda' read it. But, if the verdict is as surprising as the margin of victory, that throws me. The GTI winning is not surprising. Anyways, time will tell :)
-

The Gti has less horsepower so the surprise is that it beats it!

Just bought Autocar, reading the review/comparison now.
I could scan it and upload, but that's probably against the rules, right?
-
The suspense is killing me!!! What was the final verdict??? (Or else I'll have to wait till I get home to pick up my subscription...)
-
The general verdict is that they are both great cars in isolation. As a comparison the GTI is better as an overall package. But that is an extremely short summary!
They seem to love the GTI.
-
Thanks Paul... I'll have to wait till I get home to read the full report. Good to know that the GTi didn't get mullered by the ST anyway..
-
It's the "first drive" section that interests me more, it's a review of the non PP GTI, it says "even without the much hyped XDS+ the new GTI manages to rise above it's rivals" "the turn in isn't quite as sharp" refering to the PP it says "for some, great is just not good enough."

Yes the gti won! Read the headline.

Jimble, I'm being thick and don't understand. Which of these quotes refer to the GTI, the GTI Performance and the ST? Doesn't the standard GTI have XDS+, that quote doesn't seem to make sense.

GTi definitely gonna feature in new series of Fifth Gear... Don't ask me when though.... With the way things are going, we could be waiting till next year!!!!

Your not being thick mate, it just doesn't read very well! :embarrassed:
First two quotes are talking about the standard GTI and for some reason they're calling the PP, XDS+??
The third quote is basically saying although the standard car is great it's just not quite good enough for some who will go for the PP.
I still don't think that makes sense...

All interesting stuff, and nice to hear it's a genuinely good car in either form. It doesn't surprise me if it is a close call, but the very things I don't like about the Focus ST are the same things I like about the GTI. It's just a no-brainer for me!

I haven't driven a new ST but I have driven a new Focus, and I found the interior way too busy, build-quality poor (not just rattles, but crappy cloth covering the gap between the steering wheel and dash, awful casing and fittings around the rear view mirror electronics etc.) and the ride uninspiring. OK, it wasn't a sporty model, but I felt no connection with the road at all. I guess my current GTI spoiled me, but I just didn't like the Focus handled, or the exterior looks!
-
I'm definitely not a big fan of the new Mk3 Focus ST.... the external & internal styling just don't do it for me anymore.... far too complicated & fussy for my liking! And the fact they've done away with the five-pot is a real travesty!
Having said that the previous Mk2 ST was a real peach to drive! That 2.5l five-pot had real character & a soundtrack to match (think Audi Quattro). Unfortunately it also had a thirst for super-unleaded (averaged 21mpg on my daily commute) and a went through tyres like nobody's business (could only manage 8000 miles on a full set).
This and the fact that it had a bit of an "ASBO" reputation, made me change to my current Golf. Even though the Focus ST gave me many years of fun memorable motoring, I have no regrets looking back. The GTi is definitely the better car if I was to pick between the two.

I used to own a said 2.5 st and it was a truly amazing car to drive (with a Dreamscience remap). The only reason I sold it was because it was as thirsty as a prostitute, think 19mpg driving like Miss Daisy. Still waiting for the arrival of a good sounding 4-pot.

I have to agree with everything in the above 2 posts. I currently have a Focus ST3 remapped with Dreamscience on Race Plus map pushing out about 270bhp. The ST is truely an amazing car, but with 20-25mpg, £270 a year road tax, I thought it was time to go the diesel route and hence the GTD. I'm hoping the GTD will give me some of the torque I'm used to with the ST. I really am going to miss the raw performance of the ST and the lovely sound of the 5 cylinder 2.5 turbo (oh and the heated windscreen!).
Looks like we will be together for another 4 months, if VW get their way

Nice find!.... One of the better reads. Totally agree... The GTi pricing is dangerously close to the M135i.
-
It's only close to the M135i if you fully load the car; plus they always quote the base price for the beemer, and that doesn't include all the toys that you would spec if you bought one - so IMO no comparison, different cars for different purposes. But if they were talking about the R....
Interesting that this is the first reviewer who has specifically commented on the Dynaudio - good to read. I think a lot of the reviewers forget that yes its all about the drive but options like that add to the driving experience so should be tested, so good to see him note that.
-
Another nice, "written for the average buyer" review, which typifies exactly what I want out of a car and why I chose the Mk7 GTI in the first place.
-
Nice review of the ACC (much to the annoyance of mcmaddy :lipsrsealed: ) it seems that most agree that you wouldn't be disappointed if you order the non PP car, although i wonder if that particular journo had the chance to try the PP car? Hmmm...

Well, per my recent "Happy Accident?" thread, I've gone and removed the Performance Pack (and Park Assist for different reasons), and added in basic Sat Nav. It's all too easy to get sucked into the hype and you end up with what other people want you to have, rather than what you really want!
Great to read about the ACC/DCC though, very happy to have specced that :)
-
Feel slightly miffed that I didn't order the ACC as everyone rates it so highly.
Just never really thought much of it in my Scirocco and does not feel like enough of a feature that it should be an option.
But will stick with what I have got. Which so far is nothing, not even an order number!
-
I know what you mean pauliem, I have a small nagging feeling in the back of my mind for not adding the ACC - but then I remember that I would only drive it in Sport mode all the time anyway so for me was not worth the extra cost (and I don't care about a firm ride, I actually quite enjoy it :lipsrsealed:)
You really must chase your dealer for this order number though....

The M135i is tremendous value for money in terms of performance, however there are two things that put me off:-
1) It's bloody ugly
2) RWD - yes true sports cars are RWD but in this country it doesn't make sense. For 6 months of the year it would be as useful as as a chocolate teapot.

Totally agree. Its a brilliant car no doubt. But having had a rear wheel drive car (although its great to drive) I can vouch for it being a nightmare, particularly in the snow/ice!
-
I just used the BMW configure tool to spec an M135i to the same sort of level as the GTI I ordered. Comes to £38k though clearly this is without discounts (and its better performance). GTI is around £30k. That is a fair gap, but I am surprised the 1 Series didn't end up at £40k which is sort of what I expected it to be at.
It looks like a really nice car, although personally I don't like BMW dash styling. £8k extra means its not really competing in the same way. You could swap your high spec GTI for a stock M135i but I'm unsure how many people willing to splash out on all the GTI options would then be willing to forgo them just to grab the better performance.

I translated the first minute of the video using the German captions and taking only some small liberties...
The Golf is doing the talking itself. It is unclear to me if this talking feature is available on UK GTIs or only on German ones, though my research continues:
Already my ancestors all talk about the myth created over the last three decades. I am the seventh and strongest of all time in my family. After 37 years of my family history you would expect that I, the latest and greatest GTI of all time would be only pure pure pure. My father is the first of the GTIs and he led the way by being affordable for people who like a light sport car but have only a narrow wallet, and now of course I can also do this. I was proving their -unclear- with all I have from the (shelves?) of the Wolfsburg -unclear- and I have progressive sport steering and my front axle has -unclear- multi-linking -unclear- and I even brake harder than the first Golf -unclear- including Google Streetview.
Want more?
That -unclear- cousin of mine, the A3 for over a year has surely not a single -unclear- technology or comfort in the traditional sense ahead of me. (Then there is something about the 207SW? From this point on things get a bit weird)
With well over 200 bhp and weighing 810kg at the 10,000 marks (eh? deuschemark?) I tasted his heavy heritage. Now 1,351kg and almost 30k Euros now I am firmly shaped just waiting for some beers to make me mad so I can compete with the -unclear-. Today I want to be in the top ten and beat the self-righteous -unclear-.
I have to actually prove myself which not everyone seems to be asked to do. I do not buck (?) but I found time for Prince Phillip to try my handling on the mushroom corner of the Autobild (really?) but I always handle well and he complained that people are surprised because I am so normal. Yet this is not hard for me even when managing 25mpu (eh?) and wearing expensive pants.
Then I go even further, I am packaged in top form with a simplistic front axes and coarse vented discs and rear. Yes, I take the GTI myth more than my fair share and if that is all then -unclear- in me there is still the question fo why there is a performance package? But for that question it is far to late to discuss now, lets just celebrate this evening. My sales will be high despite the high exaggeration of the sympathetic (?) consumption as much as I can from sex.com (Woah! hold on a minute!) at 400lires.
It definitely says that bit about sex at the end, I swear. Not sure I want one of these things now if all it is going to do is talk about beer and sex and reminisce about its time with Prince Phillip and when they shared some 'mushrooms'.
-
There must be something wrong with the subtitles because I swear my translation is perfect.
-
lol, thanks bear
-
lol, thanks bear
No problem.
It has subsequently occurred to me that the "mushroom" referred to might actually be what German cars call "hairpins" as opposed to an illicit substance the car was sharing with the Duke of Edinburgh, though I am not 100% certain. In any case, the sex and beer still worry me. Unless sex is the German word for seconds? Is he boasting about his 0-60 performance?

Mine came out a little cheaper...
BMW M135i
5 door (Auto) £32,500
Alpine White £0
Adaptive Suspension £515
M-17" Sports Brakes (standard)
Total £33,015
Mk7 Golf GTi
5 door (DSG) £27,915
Pure White £200
Dynamic Chassis Control £795
Performance Pack £980
Total £29,890
Difference £3,125
OK £3k is still "a lot" of money, but not such a "huge" difference considering (admittedly the M-lite wont have a LSD). Thus if I was looking for a performance hatch in this price bracket you would have to look at both as a real possibility.
-
Love the translation by the way
-
The 135i could be £5k cheaper with all the same kit and options, but I still wouldn't consider it.

I've not specced an M135 but as someone mentioned on a previous thread the standard items you get on the golf are incredible
Dual zone climate control, cruise control, folding mirrors, dab radio etc
Possibly all options on the BMW. By the time you add all them in your way more than £3k. Seems a bit unfair that every hot hatch is getting compared to the M135 just now. A better comparison would be the new R32 or S3
-
Unfortunately the "standard" M-lite is pretty well spec'd anyway. Xenons, DAB, Bluetooth connectivity, climate control, extended light pack, anthracite headlining, headlight wash all come as 'Standard'. To make matters even worse, leather seats are thrown in for free as well (which is a £1600 option on the VW - not leather anyway but that's not the point).
I'm not trying to say the M-lite is better than a GTi... All I'm getting at is that it represents exceptional value for money when pitted against the likes of the new Golf GTi.
-
Just specced up a 135i to the same ish spec as the GTI i've ordered and it comes to £36820, that includes the standard leather in the BMW but i'd rather have the cloth that used to be an option, my GTI is £33175 and although i quite like the BMW in M sport guise, i don't think it's worth that much.
-
The 1 series feels quite a bit smaller and more cramped in the cabin and boot when compared to the golf.
-
Yes very cramped! I'm only average height (5ft 8) but I found it a squeeze in the back.. Even though it was a 5 door I test drove, I found getting in & out of the back a bit of a struggle too. It's a BIG improvement over the old 1 series, but this was one of the main reasons I opted for the Golf instead.
-

Completely agree with that, test drove a 120d late last year and was a little underwhelmed tbh, that was mainly due to the engine but although the interior was a nice place to sit it was cramped for the dealer sat behind my 6'2" frame.

Agreed... I would definitely pay £31k for one, but when we're talking £36k then its a completely different ball game.

This reviewer essentially says that the PP is an absolute must have and the car feels much faster than just 10 hp more. He goes on to say that after testing it he WILL be buying one for himself :)

Great review
-
Another good review, and another one where the focus is on drivers perpetually driving their cars either on a track or like they are on one. It's great the PP is being so well received, and works well, but the more I read about it the more I'm glad I didn't bother in the end. I guess it depends on what you want a GTI for, and for me it's the comfort and refinement, not outright performance. The standard car is basically the fastest I will have ever owned

That's the thing with the modern day GTI, it's pretty much a jack of all trades. As good as it is at fast cruising and effortlessly covering large distances in great comfort, it's just as good at hooning round twisty B-Roads, especially with the new performance pack.
ps: I will mainly be doing the second scenario

Yeah exactly, it's the sheer versatility of the car that makes it for me. In all honesty, even my current car is more than fast and capable enough for me in that regard. Also, most of my driving is either around town, A roads, motorways, and the occasional B roads. I wonder though, of those who go for the PP, how many of them will actually drive around corners faster because of it? It's all down to personal skill and how comfortable you are at those speeds. As they say, the closer to the limits you are, the faster you will fall ;)

Decent review although his figures are a little scewed as they don't really know what they're getting in the states yet and it's interesting that he says the yanks are getting a normal handbrake?? Maybe thats how they get it so sideways in the Vegas advert? I doubt they'll get it though.

I'm really surprised the optional 19" Santiago wheels haven't featured more heavily on their press/ test cars? I'm sure they would sell a lot more of the 19" wheels if they were given more exposure (& consequently make more money for VW)... But then maybe the fact they're a £900 option made VW think twice about putting them on their press cars?
-
My guess is that they're not on the test cars as the ride will obviously be harder on 19's and they want to showcase the comfort of the car. Still surprising there isn't any vids though

Neil, thanks for that, will the Ipad version be available earlier ?
Any idea when they will let you loose on the GTD as it seems there are no reviews or test what so ever (like VW is keeping them back to save taking the limelight from the GTI) ?

I think it's a case of Icon before Pretender
Seriously though, I would have thought a joint press week with petrol and diesel to review would have made sense. I guess this way it gives them two dollops of publicity rather than the one. Sucks for all the GTD fans though waiting for info and reviews.

Well I suppose they got the "bags of space for four adults & luggage correct!"....

Well to be fair I'm sure that while they may be a bit docile, they are probably just given a car and not much about it other than "It's the new GTI". Given the lack of information and apparent knowledge at VW, it doesn't surprise me at all!

Mine arrived this morning. Neil and Paul Harris's views are very important and interesting. Also a good review of the Blue GT Polo wigit-mobile.
As for that 'The Sun' review. How rubbish and lazy. The journos get the full press pack so no excuses.

I have to ask what was the long and short of the review by Neil and Paul. Did he mention the PP on the GTI?

Glowing review for the performance pack
The moral of the story is that if you drive you car in a manner befitting of PP, it's a great addition and makes it a more focused ride. For the rest of us, the stock car is more than capable enough with its XDS+, good brakes, and lighter weight!

I think because:
1: They spec up the first cars as high as they can to rape the wallets of impatient early adopters.
2: Flat white is only this popular in the UK & Spain.

Yep, me too! I read somewhere else that the 230bhp was really 250bhp when tested.

They test them going down a hill? hehe
Do they not have to do a run in one direction, then turn around and repeat it in the reverse direction, then take an average of the two runs? Otherwise wind and road slope wouldn't be accounted for. I kinda doubt this could account for a whole missing second though!

I've no idea how it works, but if the car does sub 6 seconds 0-60 I'll take it any which way!

Great clip... Just wished I'd payed more attention in German at school... The Santiago's are beginning to grow on me again, however they still look a little under wheeled even though they're 19"? The car looks like its on stilts....

THE GOOD
Better looking than in the brochure.
Beautiful wheels. The exhaust note.
Stylish cockpit. Corners as though it is on rails.
Comfortable. Steering Wheel.
Fast! - even without the PP. Well equipped
THE BAD
The wait until September.
It will be worth the wait though, give the dealers a chance.

Literally no point me taking any pics now Torch - I'm off to the same place in an hour! Brilliant set of pics, excellent stuff!

Predictable as ever, is it just me or do any negative points just mean it could do with being a bit worse, then it would be better
Exactly my thoughts. If the car has a few minor faults then they say its not quite perfect and they are disappointed. If those faults are gone then its not "raw" enough, or its somehow less "fun" or "detached". Basically they want a car engineered to perfection... yet its also got to be as basic as the original mk1. You can't win.
I also think (rightly or wrongly) the GTI gets held to a higher standard than almost any other car and therefore is criticised much more. Part of this might be the price tag of course. However, if the Focus ST or Astra have problems (say torque steer) then they are let off because its part of the "fun". If the GTI has no torque steer then its "disconnected". Even more expensive cars like the M135i seem to get given a bigger break on the grounds that they are new/different/excel at one thing... Poor GTI could get 10/10 in all areas but will still be berated for the single 9/10 on the score board.
Also have you noticed how 99% of the comments on reviews or press releases are derisive of the GTI? I take the view that these comments are by people who can't afford one (or probably even an ST) and will secretly be highly jealous when they see a mk7 drive by.
EDIT:
On the other hand these reviews are written by journalists (most of whom don't know jack about engineering beyond what they read in the press releases) who've driven the car for maybe half a day. So what the hell do they know anyway?   I'll take the opinion of someone on here who's had a test drive any day!
-
I know how I drive day to day and have absolute zero doubt the GTI/GTD would tick every box and alot more for me and that any criticism I see in these reviews is of far more relevance to those seeking track like performance differences than me!
Been out in my A3 this morning in town, down a rat run to motorway and just returned, a real mix of conditions and came back as usually do feeling pretty good about the whole experience. - Expect the GTD to be equal at minimum and likely better still.
For 99.9% of us a review picking at the point second here or the slightly detached feel there means nothing as we appreciate the whole so much more than they ever will.

Always annoys me when they say "of all time". Can they go into the future? Are they about to destroy the world and know that this is it? What they mean to say is "so far" but I guess they don't think that has the same drama queen ring to it!
Anyway, its a category so wide as to make comparisons highly subjective (aka worthless). Not having looked at the list I am going to assume I've driven few if any of the cars on it, but I'm still pleased to hear the mk7 is there.
-
Just to give you a taster top 10 goes something like this....
1. Porsche Cayman S
2. Ford Fiesta ST
3. Ferrari 458 Italia
4. Toyota GT86
5. Porsche Boxter
6. Porsche 911 Carrera S
7. Jaguar F Type V6 S
8. Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
9. Golf GTi Mk7
10. Caterham 7 Roadsport
Like with a lot of lists of this type, its highly subjective, but its still good to see the Golf highly regarded. I always take Autoexpresses comments with a pinch of salt.

I have driven 4 of the top 10, quite happy with that!

Yeah, the problem is their criteria are just "fast" and "fun"... then they include things as varied as a Ferrari F12, Fiesta and Caterham 7. I think its really hard to rank these cars in the same list.
However, given they have done it I'm pleased to find the mk7 GTI up here while the M135i and Focus ST are missing. Less convinced by the appearance of the GT86 but whatever.
And if they are going to have a Ferrari at the no. 3 and no. 8 spots then what made them exclude other supercar manufacturers? Is a Nissan GTR less fun than a Fiesta ST? Or are they in fact including a price/value criteria they have not mentioned?
:undecided:

Yes I agree... It's very difficult to lump all these cars into one great big list, but it makes for a great shopping list if you were to ever win the 'Lottery'.
Just to let you know Ford Focus ST is ranked 14, whilst the BMW M135i is ranked 11

Haha! What the hell is a "Golf GTI Mk7 Suit"? Was called "body" last time I checked, although thinking about it that is an equally silly name. Translation fun, hehehe.
-
Yeah nice little review... Made me laugh out loud in some places... It's like they've used a direct translation from "Bing". Not sure about the statement regarding good "neck" support from the seats??? Unless it comes equipped with a 'Hans' device, I'm not sure the seats (however good they may be) are going to give you much neck support at all....
It's like the reviewer swallowed the entire 'Oxford' dictionary when it comes to his descriptions...

Some good pics in Tornado Red there, and those 1/2 alcantara or suede seats look great - why the hell can't the UK have access to those?

Those 1/2 alcantara seats do look fantastic If only we could spec them

What would make a lot of sense would be if VWUK surveyed their strong and vocal fan base for what options are desirable and maybe even asked if we thought the proposed prices were "reasonable". That last part might be tricky, but my main point stands...
If they did this we could tell them we wanted those seats, the proper metal foot pedals, the damn winter screen to be a part of the winter pack, and maybe even a golf ball designed DSG knob. My guess is they would make more sales of things like the seats and winter screen if they had done this sort of thing!
EDIT:
Oh yes, we could ask for the Blue (is it lightening blue?) to be an optional colour too!

Completely agree re the climate windscreen. IMO that should be part of the winter pack with no additional cost. After all what your £355 is really paying for is only the heated seats

And those are free with leather... so when I had winter I was paying £350 for useless heated washer jets probably costing VW about £5 to add. I could buy a laptop PC for £350!
My current Ford has a heated windscreen option for £100. So yeah, it should totally be included by VW. Also they should be charging £200 or something not £350. £350 for heated washer jets that don't work, or £100 for a heated windscreen, which seems more sensible?

That's what it's called on the Scirocco, the classic "R32" shade was definitely not Rising Blue, but very close to it (could it have been lightning blue?).

Might have been posted before this thread is long now but given reviews from some 'experts' that there is a little of a detached handling then think this video maybe puts that in perspective as the GTI looks pretty lively and fun and handles brilliantly at speed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ak_JoKk6eI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ak_JoKk6eI)

Just goes to show how good the GTi's Performance Pack torque vectoring LSD is, compared to the Ford's (which works more like the Golfs XDS system by applying a subtle amount of braking to the inside wheel). You could just sense the ST understeering into the Armco.
I pity the poor fella buying this particular demonstrator!

Ok, this isn't a GTI review per se. However, it does have piccies of many of the interior bits those who haven't got inot a demo may not have seen. So I post it up anyway:

Loved seeing how the GTI handles in that video as even though getting a GTD, much of that experience will be same through them bends :) and as selected ACC on mine good to see an in the moment review of changes from comfort through to sport.
His only concern was on price against BMW not on GTI itself as he obviously loves it and the latest reviews overall are all praising the GTI to hilt.
The comments section there is always completely polarised in responses - One GTI owner there also saying how improved MK7 is over previous.

This is the subjective part I think as there are plenty who love the ST out there but I really struggle to see in looks externally and internally how it is ever preferred to the GTI? and even on road it seems something you spend most of time taming rather than enjoying.
That interior is garish, awful! and would genuinely just annoy me having to look at it each day with it's awkward over accentuated shapes - But that is me I suppose as I prefer minimalist which has an obvious feel of class and quality.

It'll actually be us GTI drivers with the soot issue. The tailpipes on my mk6 GTD are always spotless, I do wonder if anything comes out of them at all!
The mk5 GTI pipes were always going black and I believe the mk7 will be the same.

The GTI in St Albans tailpipes were covered to point could not see chrome on left pipe at all - do have a photo that will post later but I thought strange at time as this not an issue on my A3. Someone said the petrol are run rich to save engine wear?
But it does seem that the GTI is one that exhudes soot ;)
-
Yup, I see a few GTI's with black tail pipes, but then I also see some where they look clean, just not as polished. Even the ones on my Mk5 are pretty much as I'd expect. Just whip around them with some soapy water and polish on a bathroom scourer once a week to stop the build-up.

And also like the mk6, the xenons do their little "dance" on startup, pointing up and down and sideways. Very cool if you face the car into a window and watch the lights as you start her up!
On top of all this, I think the fogs light up as you turn left/right, like they do in the lesser mk6's. I could swear the left/right fogs were coming on as I drove around the bends into my estate tonight! I don't know for certain, I'd need someone from outside the car to tell me!

Also, swivelling headlights. James will be pleased!

Thanks for that mate, it's not the fogs that light up it's the static cornering bulb in the main headlight, there is an extra bulb between the main xenon lamp and the sidelights.

Posted above.
The problem I have with this review is the one he did a couple of months earlier for Autoexpress was highly enthusiastic, he even says at the end "Have VW made the best all round hot hatch money can buy? Absolutely yes!" Yet now he doesn't seem so impressed... The M135i and Sport Megan are better drives apparently. He "Rather likes this car" but it doesn't seem like the resounding praise from before...
I think this is new:

Strangely at 00:24 it looks like a GTD!

Hey Bill I was thinking the exact same thing. Sounds like he's changed his mind on the GTI or he has selected memory. Not great journalism is it - quite like his reviews normally.
That clip reminds me of my test drive today. This GTI has grown on me more and more as the day has worn on. The exhaust note was exactly as I experienced. That's growing on me now too. Giddy

Sounds terrific, glad to hear the clip is realistic. SO much better sounding than the BRZ I drove. Going to be a long wait for a test drive here.

What's really getting on my nerves with these reviews is the constant quibbling about a decent specced GTI being in m135i territory - yes, if you want a poverty spec version then the prices become closer together - but if you add the same spec to the BMW they're still miles apart - so they are not comparable!!
-

Yeah, its like they assume if you add PP and say Keyless and Winter to the GTI to put it at around £30k then you can also pick up a BMW with the exact same spec also for £30k, but now with 300bhp.
Why not do it the other way around? Review a BMW and then point out all the stuff it is missing and would need to be added as an option. At the end point out you can have a GTI for the same money with all this as standard.

Now Auto Express have it losing out to the Focus   These reviews are all over the place

I'm not out to buy "the best hot hatch" by some group verdict. I'm out to buy a classy, fast, comfortable, everyday car that doesn't scream "look at me" and doesn't boast ridiculous horsepower to achieve its performance. By all accounts the Mk7 GTI is the best GTI yet, and the very reason it loses out in the driver engagement stakes is the very reason I'm choosing it!
-
Ahhh, so it would better if it understeered and torque steered? More exciting right? Who wants grip and faster cornering?
Bunch of industry bung taking muppets, every magazine and review site.
-
I'd rather boil my own testicles than buy a Focus! The renault i could manage but not the Focus.

The definition of fun is a strange thing as to many journalists it means having to wrestle and tame a car to keep it on road? But to highlight this as fun does I think massage their egos, makes them appear cool to a certain audience.
To me that is last thing I would want to have to do!
Sure it is great to take all traction controls off and go mad on a track and think you are some kind of hero in that controlled arena, but when someone like the Stig for example produces a fast time there is none of that drama it is all about the line and keeping the car on it smoothly and that is way I would like my car to handle at speed
I bought my present car with Quattro as I want on rails handling and love it for it, I can push it hard and very satisfyingly through lanes in total confidence and knowing the MK7 has great fully assured handling was the final decider for me to switch.
So when I see a journo state a car is fun I am actually a whole lot more wary!! I prefer comments that are being placed on GTI of it being very fast but also very assured :)

sorry its late and i have no decent pictures yet. so will give you a quick review of a no holds barred good kicking i gave it on sunday.
picked our new gti up on saturday at lookers tee side. thankfully they had done as i had asked and hadnt washed it, only removed the protective film. this was the first gti i had seen in the flesh and was over the moon. My girlfriend drove it from the dealers, as its her i bought it for. first impressions were very good very comfortable and she is very happy.
sunday morning I started a 6 hour clean and wax, which when finished left it looking stunning. not a single buffer mark swirl or blemmish of any kind. time for a propper go. gave it a good thrashing about on some quiet b roads, superb pick up and acceleration but what really stood out was the grip around corners. ive not drove anything like it. next up a roundabout, with the road clear i put it in second and put my foot down and went round like it was on rails, ive never pushed a car as hard but could not believe how much it hung on, so good i had to do it again. very pleased we got the performance pack, some reviews say that most would never use it to its potential but the smile on my face after a 10 minute thrash proved that i probably will. also love the sound it makes when accelerating, very gruff.
back to work monday and the car has transformed itself into a kids taxi and commuter whilst im away, working all week driving a diesel golf gt sport. which incidentally cost more to insure than the gti. cant wait to get home and show the car whos the daddy and why we bought it rather than a 1.4 tsi.

Auto express are god awfull, they make so many mistakes in their print. For example 17'' alloys as standard on GTI
Change their mind each week to pander to whichever manufacturer is flavour of the month.

Good timing that quote as GTI is being marked down by some journo for not being 'fun' enough, as in too good and not having to be tamed like a focus (there is video on here of GTI and ST on track and ST was all over the place!)
It seems you, like rest of us actually love that on rails cornering as you push it hard that others amazingly see as dull?!!
great from the heart review :)

Still goes on about the Performance Pack like its sent from God. Why don't they just review the base GTI for what it is. Getting really pissed off by these reviews now. And before you get on my back, I've no issue with the PP upgrade. Is it too much to ask these journalists to simply review the actual car they're driving. Lazy, lazy, lazy
-
Not exactly a review but the GTI is on the MSN best cars of the year list:

Good to see a close up of one with a sunroof.
Also, those front brake discs definately fill the wheels better on the PP model..

Insane but intriguing video comparison test of an Audi R8 Plus and a Mk 7 with the PP here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgxFaeqltLQ). Unfortunately the audio is all in German with no subtitles (despite the misleading use of an English title and description - the old bait and switch). Anyone care to offer a summary?
-
Well it basically starts out with them saying that obviously the R8 will win, yet because of the corners will it? Then I got bored and turned it off.
For every 1 English review there seem to be 10 German ones. I thought we'd had this argument and everyone agreed English was the way to go?

I watched some of it simply to hear that incredible Audi V10 engine, the only cars that sound better are the Carrera GT and the LFA.

How on earth though do they get to buy a PP golf for $25k (about £18k) thats obscene..

The footwell lights are white LED's in the GTI. I guess they could appear blue-ish in photos.

hello chaps,
I've just started a blog about the VW group and my first post is a review on the Golf GTI MK7. So I thought this would be an appropriate place to ask for help. If you could have a look at my review and reply back to me as to what you think of it.
for example, is it too short? does it need to be more detailed?

thank you

It's not really a review though is it? You've just written down what some of the spec is, now if you'd driven it and had something to say about it then, i'd be very interested!
Needs to be far more detailed and could do with a few real life photo's rather than just the one off the VW website.

I'll be the first
1) He doesn't mention anything about the impact that the extra torque has
2) He says the alloys aren't as sharp as the previous ones - absolute mince!
3) It doesn't corner as well as the megane or ST - funny, every other reviewer has said the LSD is brilliant
Why am I not surprised that the two Dutch reviews that I've seen so far are not enamoured with a German car
-
Totally agree Craig! I have a German mate and the Dutch and the Germans hate each other - no surprise he didn't give a glowing review and skirted around the issues. All in all, this 'cheesehead' needs to lay off the weed IMO

"hate" is an understatement - I have seen many shops in Amsterdam refuse to serve German tourists, and I have been on a DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam after a NUFC vs Eindoven friendly where most of the clientele were Eindoven fans going home. When the compere asked where everyone was from and one elderly family declared themselves as the only Germans on the ship they were roundly booed and had nuts thrown at them. The elderly German head of the family was up for a fight but none of teh Dutch took him up on his offer. Those Dutch have long memories!
-
The problem with some of these reviews now is that because the GTI is historically been known as a hot hatch the most important comparison for the reviewers is out and out performance. As a result the GTI is losing out badly against the VXR, Megane, ST and 135.
I know it has to be the complete all rounder and that its streets ahead in terms of quality but I so wish that VW had been a bit more adventurous with the bhp and offered 250-260. It would have then wiped the floor with the competition (135 excepted). IMO there was scope to up the bhp and still not tread on the toes of the future R.

You're spot on with the bhp, but honestly they'd have to cut the price a bit to really hurt the ST or Megane. 250bhp and £2k off the price and no one should be buying an ST. They'll never do it though because they're offering more versatility and history than the ST so in VWs mind they are not competing. VW are gonna have to live with the fact that a lot of reviews will ignore how good this car is and focus on bhp/£ and those that aren't driving one will give 1001 reasons why they don't like the GTI no matter how jealous they are.

Not sure I agree on the GTI needing 250+ HP... It's the fastest GTI yet, isn't that much slower than an ST 0-60, and for me it's all about how usable that power is in everyday driving. It's an extremely well balanced car, and therein lies its appeal, which as Bear already said, will get ignored by the reviewers and interpreted as being less exciting etc.
-
Tests seem to show it's pretty much equal to the Focus ST in the acceleration department.
-

On paper it's only a bit slower, but yes, unconfirmed tests have shown it to be as fast. Then again, then have similar tests been done on the ST that we are not bothered about looking for? But anyway, like I said, it's all about usable power. No point having 250+ HP if the car can only lay down 200 of it.
-

You're right, it really doesn't need it! Having it would stop the "on paper" comparisons but wouldn't do much else.

If it's considered a hot hatch, which it is by many who associate the three letters with performance, then it should be matching if not bettering its rivals.
Truth be told, I went down the GTI route only because the S3 was out of my budget. 300bhp is far more attractive to me than 220, however 250 would have been a nice compromise. As it is 220 is just a bit underpowered imo.
-
But on the other hand you only get the 220 at high revs right? And having that power distributed to the wheels is more important. So is it only underpowered on paper? I do think the higher bhp of the rivals is a selling point but gives little practical benefit.
And yet, if I could make one change to the car... I would change the dash :lipsrsealed: but if I could make two changes I would go 250 or 260 like you say!
-
Has anyone seen anything about remaps yet ? Could be all you need to get the car up to the BHP you desire.
-
You've got 230 Craig - don't forget the PP adds more power!

I agree though, I would have like 250 - but I suppose that is what will make the R extremely tempting when I want to change from the GTI!

In that case, maybe you made the wrong choice if power means more to you? What matters to me is how the car performs in the real-world. According to the Ford website, the ST has 250HP and hits 0-62 in 6.5 seconds, with higher CO2 emissions and worse fuel economy. In VWs defence, I'd say they got the whole point of a "hot hatch" bang on the money. Such a car isn't about raw power, it's about practicality and making best use of the power that it has. VW made a car just as quick, with less HP, lower running costs, and a far better cabin to enjoy it all in.

But originally a hot hatch would be cheaper than the current mk7 is really and would focus less on the high quality interior. I think the Fiesta ST is a better candidate for hot hatch given your criteria above. It offers power, performance, practicality and all that for a lot lot less money. If you go for the GTI it has to be because you're considering other things like the image, the styling, the history, the build quality, extra space... and these things aren't exclusive or even all that common on a car described as a hot hatch. IMO.

I would be inclined to agree, if it's all proportional to price, then the Fiesta ST is a better candidate for a hot hatch than either the Focus ST or Golf GTI. But, as two cars in the same category, I believe VW have a far more balanced package than Ford do.

Perhaps you can't see past the VW brand and the GTI badge and its the be all and end all of all cars in your eyes. I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one as we have on many other points already.

Put a Focus ST and a GTI side-by-side and remove the badges. Just going by looks alone, I much prefer the cleaner, straighter lines of the GTI, and the difference between the interiors is like night and day. No other car in this category fulfills as many of the criteria that I'm looking for, hence why I have gone for it over a GTD even.
These are forums, I'm not going to agree or be diplomatic all the time just to keep the peace. Clearly these are my opinions and not statements of indisputable fact.
-
The extra 30bhp the Focus ST produces it struggles to put down if reviews and road tests are to be believed, power you can't use / access makes it a bit pointless.
If it was purely about driving dynamics or headline power figure we'd all be looking at the Megan 265 or Astra VRX wouldn't we?
-
Too many manufacturers have got obsessed with headline power figures in my view. We all know, or should know that torque is that what really matters and that is one of the reasons I chose the gti, because it has tons of torque from low revs and in gear acceleration in the real world comes from lotS of low rev torque.
I think cars like the s3 can put the power down, as can the m135 but most front wheel drive cars I maintain around 220 bhp or so is the sweet spot in terms of using the power and putting it on the road. Any front drive car that can do 0-60 in around 6 secs is pretty much as good as it will get. My 1997 fiat coupe with 220 bhp can do that, so it shows in 15 years of development, the game hasn't been moved on much in terms of front wheel drive.
Headline power figures are just for pub talk IMO, in the real world other things count, like torque, grip, build quality etc and this for me sums up the gti package
As someone said before. The fiesta st or a used Clio 200 cup would do the hot hatch thing perfectly if the other factors were low priority..

Sorry, even 300 doesn't cut it. Not when you can get 455 hp for 33.8k pounds sterling (before taxes, current conversion rates) in the new Stingray, just 3k more than an S3. C7 here we come!
Of course you probably can't drive a Vette in half the villages in the UK...even if in reality it's no bigger than the new 911. Oh and then there is the pesky issue of no back seats....
Update:
HOLY S@#$T - I just checked the UK Chevy web site - the new Vette is "starting from £61,495" :o ;D

The Vette is 60k plus in the UK?? And a V8 not a 4 pot small family hatchback, not really a fair comparison.

Just found that out - see updated post. But over here at least it's interesting how VW prices itself. In Canada a GTI with PP and nav is probably going to be $35k, and we won't even be offered some things like your ACC adjustable ride or 8" HU screen. The new R will be about $40k going by the old one. - say 280hp, 280 torque. For another $12k the Vette has 455/450, pulls 1.1 Gs on the skid pad, 0-60 of 3.8 sec, and has staggering track performance with incredible tech. It will lap the Ring a minute quicker than an R, which is pretty amazing given the R isn't bad at 8:23.
VW may need to do what Nissan just did in the US on its 370 - chop its prices by a few thousand to remain competitive (which it should be able to afford once cheap Mexican production ramps up). It's missing its sales targets badly in NA atm and just lowered its expectations for its dealers.

Well, according to the Nurburgring figures, PP is worth about 1 second per mile in the hands of a professional driver...
-
DSG issues keep coming up with these sort of tests
-
The DSG box probably didn't help.
Really?
He calls it a lovely gearbox. In my mind I think the "problems" can be summarised by saying he didn't use it right. He basically wants it in manual but since he left it in auto it changed for him. I'm guessing he doesn't drive one and didn't read the manual before getting in.
It's a bit harsh to blame the lap time purely on the DSG when by the guys own assessment the car is "comprehensively outclassed" or beaten or something. Can't remember the exact phrase.
I know lots of manual drivers personally wouldn't buy a DSG but it does seem that there is a lot of one sided criticism of it. The only actually valid piece of criticism I've heard is "I personally don't like it".
-

The thing that "grinds my gears" about the DSG is the fact that you stick it in manual and it still wants to change gears for you - leave it alone DSG, I want to do it! I could understand the car forcing a change-up if you're holding onto a gear in the red line zone, but when you're in 2nd at 30mph under medium acceleration and you go to change up only to find that at the point of working the paddles it has just changed up itself, so you end up going up 2 gears instead of one - that just infuriated me when it happened about 3 times on my extended test drive in the first 10 mins and I just stuck it in D.
-
I drove a golf equipped with a DSG (not a GTI or GTD admittedly) and while it was great in stop start traffic, the rest of the time I just felt it took away from the fun of driving. I guess I just like being in control of what gear I am in at what revs and for how long. If it were a large family-wagon with a whole different purpose, I might look at DSG differently, but not in a car like the GTI.
-
The thing that "grinds my gears" about the DSG is the fact that you stick it in manual and it still wants to change gears for you
Are you sure? Was it in "M" or just on override? If it is in "M" then it claims to never initiate a change except to prevent red lining or a stall. If its just on override it will only last for 30 seconds then will return to auto mode. If it was in "M" and changed for you then it was a faulty unit.

Thats fine, you personally prefer manual. I understand that, I like the manual a lot too.
-
Can you not just use the dsg gearbox in tiptronic mode and just push it forward for changing up down for changing down . That way it should hold the gear you want ???
-

Yup, just personal preference, nothing to do with DSG box performance itself, which is a fine piece of kit!
Can you not just use the dsg gearbox in tiptronic mode and just push it forward for changing up down for changing down . That way it should hold the gear you want ???
From what I remember, when you change manually (either via paddles or tiptronic) it hold the gear you want for a bit, but then selects the appropriate one for the speed you are doing. Don't quote me though, I'm sure owners on here will clarify!
-
Can you not just use the dsg gearbox in tiptronic mode and just push it forward for changing up down for changing down . That way it should hold the gear you want ???
Exactly. I think monkeyhanger must have had it in D and used the paddles to override without realising this only gives him 30 seconds of control before it returns to D. Or possibly his unit was faulty. The guy in the video Jimble posted makes the same mistake. He uses the paddles to override, but doesn't realise when the box has taken control again. Just shows even professionals can use it wrong if they aren't used to it. (EDIT: actually seems like he had it in S but tried to shift when the box had just made the shift anyway). For those of us who have ordered a DSG we're not likely to make that mistake because we're using the car everyday, not just a one off drive.
All the criticism of the DSG I have seen has fallen into one of two categories:
1) I prefer a manual transmission.
2) I'm using the DSG wrong.
Basically neither of these are actually criticisms. This isn't a criticism of the manual boys either. I completely understand how if you prefer a manual box and you test drive a DSG you're going to find it irritating. The problem is this results in a LOT of "DSG is bad" type of comments when really what they mean is "I don't like DSG" or "I used it wrong" (they probably didn't realise they used it wrong). Look at it this way, how many people get in a car for the first time and drive away without stalling? We all stall the first time. It would obviously be wrong to then say "I tried to pull away and the car just jerked and the engine cut out, I conclude cars are horrible to drive". So why do people conclude when they have a bad experience with a DSG that it is the DSGs fault? Clearly if it was really that bad it would never be sold. You have to learn to use it, and if you don't want to then that's ok, there is the manual box.
I also disagree with Gryzor's idea that a DSG should not be on a GTI. Clearly opinions will vary and I am certainly not advocating that the GTI should not have a manual. However, the whole car is full of new technology with advanced electronics... so why do people think its wrong for that to extend into the gearbox? Virtually every other part of the car has computerised electronics, from the engine to the rain sensors, it makes complete sense to update gearbox technology too. Furthermore the DSG is faster! Isn't that what you'd want on a GTI? Gotta remember the DSG was available on the GTI way before the rest of the Golf range. It was intended for this kind of car. This is of course my opinion.
So like I said, I can understand that some of us prefer a manual, there is nothing wrong with that, and I agree that manual should be the default option. Having a DSG options makes complete sense and for those of us that go in for that and learn to use it we can fully expect it to be a great bit of kit in all circumstances.
From what I remember, when you change manually (either via paddles or tiptronic) it hold the gear you want for a bit, but then selects the appropriate one for the speed you are doing. Don't quote me though, I'm sure owners on here will clarify!
Paddles yes. Manual (tiptronic mode) no (except for red line or stall).

Exactly. I think monkeyhanger must have had it in D and used the paddles to override without realising this only gives him 30 seconds of control before it returns to D.
The stick was slotted over to the left (or was it the right?) of D, assured by the dealer before I set off that this was full manual control with override only kicking in if you were in danger of frigging the car with an attempted change. I expected the car to let me change up and down as I saw fit in this mode.

I would too! Must have been faulty.
EDIT:
Apparently in this mode it will down shift if you activate the kick down button by flooring the accelerator so might have been to do with that?

Maybe ECO mode overrides manual after a short while because the car decides you are not driving it economically and maybe NORMAL/SPORT leave you to it? I think I was initially in ECO mode.

I'd be really interested in a DSG review (assuming you get yours before I get mine!!!!).
This will be my first 'Auto' and I really hope I like it, but I do think it'll take a few weeks or even months to get used to. I'm not sure a one-off test dirve would be enough to fully evaluate it, so I haven't bothered...

Certainly.
Not sure what chance I have of getting mine before you though, I'm currently stuck in ground hog day where VW forever assure me (and a few others) that I will get a confirmed BW next week.
No seriously, this time they are almost definitely certain that its highly likely that there will probably, maybe be a confirmed date next week... or the week after, but that is the absolute latest it will probably be (maybe)!

Yes, the footage was fantastic. Why do these good reviews have to be in another language?!! Would be great to have a UK based review with the GTI and GTD going up against each other. I know I'm going to be happy with my GTD when it eventually arrives, especially after the test drive ;)

Great review Bear. Just shows you how good the GTI is when its pitted against these two monsters. In reality it should be the the forthcoming 'R' which gets tested alongside the M135i BMW and AMG Merc.

Another w@nky & pointless comparison "review" from Auto Express. Not only is he championing the Megane RS () but he could only get 6.9 secs 0-62 - I could beat that in my mk 6 manual GTI
Why do they persist with having average drivers do these tests?? Also I'm struggling to find anything in this test that we didn't all ready know??
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_irbzli_LCA
DSG beat by a manual :P lets not mention that the DSG is a GTD
I understand why they do GTI Vs GTD for choosing one.
But results are so obvious the GTI will win on performance and the GTD on additional economy. So it really is just down to what is more important to you and neither will beat the other in these category.
As for that test a little embarrassing really as saw an exact same Portuguese test where both got off line similarly and times were pretty near to what expect with the GTD trailing in about a second behind and not the street length on that video
One comment did agree with is that GTI and GTD drivers will drive very differently and I can vouch to that now as am so used to the mid range torque that is is second nature in using that band where imagine GTI drivers will be revving on a lot more.
The result is that under most road conditions the experience will be pretty good for both owners.
True tests though are diesel vs diesel and petrol vs petrol this particular test will always have same very obvious results

First post..not avirgin anymore..
ordered mk7 gtd about a motnh ago with Red pan roof dynoaudio, reverse camera. Dealer called back a week later stating big delays in reversing camera components and that the factory will delay the build possibly by an extra 3 months, VW have decided to stop offering the RV until further notice...

Nice vid. Had a job staying wake though. Odd they sell electrically heated seats in the Malaysian market: 29°C showing on the clock.
I'd question going for leather and electrically adjusted driver's seat only and not DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) or ACC (Active Cruise Control).
But what's that fuel consumption?? 24.5l/100km! That's 11.5 MPG!!
And while I'm on, what's the deal with all cars in the lot with their wipers up off the screen? Are they expecting frost?

The wipers are up off the screen normally to indicate to the garage staff the status of the car (ie flat battery, needs inspection etc)

An interesting little read, cheers gung-ho.
Interesting to read another review that quotes the GTI as being great for nine tenths of people. I certainly know that it will have enough punch for me and I will rarely if ever push it to its max. I guess the other 10 percent will be looking at other race machines and maybe that BMW 135i.

More silver pics and a review from Australia
http://www.themotorreport.com.au/57377/2014-vw-golf-gti-australian-launch-review
-
That looks awesome in silver!
-
I agree, it looks very good.
One thing I noticed is that the Aussie spec doesn't include the same tail lights we get here even though it's got the DRL & xenon lights.
-
Also they get Adaptive Chassis Control as standard in Aus?
-
Hi guys. In Australia we get adaptive chassis as standard because the roads are worse than yours. We also get the discover nav standard but there's no option for discover pro (maybe it's being saved for the R).
Xenons are an option, we have halogens as standard like Ireland. Even if you spec xenons as an option you don't get rear LEDs.
You can only have a 5 dr. Reversing camera is standard too.
The performance pack is only available one guise - dsg, santiagos, xenons, rear LEDs and alcantara in addition to the standard equipment. It's effectively a separate model like the ED35. You can't spec alcantara, santiagos or rear LEDs otherwise. You can't have manual performance pack which is rather annoying for me.
Here it's probably slightly more expensive than the UK GTI, you guys get xenons, rear LEDs and adaptive cruise control standard but not ACC or RVC. In this market, the m135i is a LOT more expensive (even the 125i is).

Not in the cities and suburbs surely? I thought the roads in Sydney were a million times better than ours in the UK. Is the GTI really a yute substitute?

I thought the ABT GTI at first glance looked like a Vauxhall Astra Hot Hatch especially from the front. From certain angles it looks quite good. But I wonder if the body kit is a bit too sharp and overkill. It looks a bit fussy from the back. A bit over detailed I think. I would prefer a body kit which had more flowing curves and smoother lines.

I have to say, this article is written as though they tested the non-PP version but the photos are clearly of a PP version (i can see the calipers).
This looks like the same red car with 19s and DSG that the other US review claimed was the only MK7 GTI on US soil. Therefore I think they've unknowingly tested the PP version thinking it didn't have the brakes or the diff... Awkward
I hope it isn't right and they genuinely did test the normal car; we can't have the PP in a manual in Australia (because VWA are idiots) so I've had to go without

Australian comparison of the GTI v Focus ST v Megane 265
http://www.caradvice.com.au/259081/hot-hatch-comparison-vw-golf-gti-v-ford-focus-st/
FYI, the article is factually accurate - Aus standard specs differ to the UK.
Compared to UK spec, add:
- RVC
- ACC
- Discover Nav (not the Pro)
Subtract:
- Bi-xenon headlights (though the test model has them as an option)
- LED tail lights

For all those waiting for your GTi to be built/arrive, at least you can play with a virtual one on GTI TV & make your own movie. Doesn't quite satisfy as much as getting your hands on that steering wheel though. http://www.golf-gti.tv/46/v4033fd47a

Another fairly un-substantial video from Auto Express, GTI vs Renault Megane RS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5hZwUuFX5A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5hZwUuFX5A)
-
It's a second slower in the track. How many second do you need to be tired from the hard suspension? Anyway, the Megane is very fast, it's the best in its class, the driver was right. But you can't live with it every day. I'm a petrolhead, but sometimes you want to relax (on a big journey for example) and it just cannot let you do that.
In my opinion though, the journalist tried to provoke the GTI and it cost him time. The PP demands a kind of "recalibration" from your mind. It's diff is electronically controlled in combination with the ESP, so if you go FAST it won't slide, it digs and go, or brakes and stay in its way. Way different to the "old school" Renaultsport.
Well, I chose das auto!!!
-
I still think its a valid test..they are very close on price
and ultimately the golf is still very rapid, sounds suitably fruity, is very planted and much fresher, as well as being a better quality product
as an all round package it really is the car to beat...as a track car probably not so good, no doubt the megane is a monster on the track, but not many people got to work or take the wife out on a track
all it does is prove to me I made the right choice in picking a car that can do everything well, rather than focusing on one thing.

Agree in all areas
-
Me agree too. And could you seriously live with those sports seats as your daily drive? No. Plus, I find the Renault is over styled, too many curves & shapes, will look old hat very rapidly. Whereas the Golf has classic lines that will stand the test of time longer.
-
Not exactly scientific in their timing either by the looks of it, rolling start with varying mph between the cars.
Anyway, he says it himself. The GTI is the most desirable hot hatch.

No no.... he is correct.... the Golf is the worlds first front wheel driven car to feature a Electronically controled Mechanical Diff. E-Diff.
The Ferrari F458 has a E-Diff too albeit a different type

No, the stuff I have read shows the difference between the standard and performance pack is the addition of a mechanical diff (bigger brakes etc.) - the electronics remain essentially the same. The diffis not electronically controlled, the electronics operate on the brakes as a part of the traction and stability control programme.

I would say this is a way better system and a shame the Golf R didnt get VAQ with Haldex, XDS+ kills the brake pads / discs and heats them up quicker during sports style driving.
The Golf R will probably understeer just like all the previous generation Haldex systems
-
I stand corrected; however, I should be very interested to understand exactly what the electronics are controlling and how because... your (pistonheads) graphic states "Electronically controlled, hydraulically activated" which suggests something other than direct electronic control of the diff...
As stated, they are sufficiently vague, as to how the control works to make their statement ambiguous...
-
The VAQ is essentially a transverse derivative of a HALDEX system. And yes, it's electronically controlled. The ESP sensors are predicting the car will slip, then an electronic signal is sent to the hydraulic pump which activates and pressurize the fluid which in turn is coupling the diff's plates to the exact amount it is needed to share the available torque to the wheels. It's a Porsche Torque Vectoring System in the front wheels. That's a VAG part-sharing byproduct which suits us!!!

so does it need regular separate oil changes like haldex? Anything said in the service book?

I don't have the service book as I do not have the car yet... But it's the usual bussines. Long life engine oil? Pah! Non changeable gearbox oil? Come on... I doubt it says anything. Of course I will be changing them at 80000km, as exactly was stated at the first generations of Haldex equipped vehicles (Seat Leon 20vt4, Audi S3 mk1 etc)

EVO Magazine now has a GTi PP long-termer on its Fast Fleet. Tornado Red with quite a few options:
"Keeping the six-speed manual ’box instead of opting for DSG also ‘saved’ me £1415 by my man-maths reckoning, justifying a bit of a splurge. So I went for the winter pack (£355 for heated front seats, heated washer jets and a ‘low washer fluid’ warning light), the electrically heated windscreen (£295), rear side airbags (£270), adaptive dampers (£815) and ‘advanced telephone preparation’, which uses an extra aerial to boost phone reception (£315). Finally, I caved in to temptation and specced the Pro nav and audio upgrade (£1765) and the Dynaudio speakers (£530). Total cost: £32,120."
Interesting to hear what they think over the six months or so that they'll run the car.

Nice review.
Why oh why do some of those people that comment on magazine write ups bother getting out of bed in the morning? Or maybe they don't?!! Silly comments from people that have obviously never been within ten yards of a mk7 Golf.
No mention of the VAQ diff in that write up, I thought the Milltek one had the PP? Unless the torque just overwhelms it which would explain why the Cupra with 280 bhp only has the same torque as the GTI (which maybe backs up the comments from one of the GTI engineers at launch saying the VAQ e-diff could only handle limited power).
The Milltek GTI would come in at about the same ££££ as an R, so you'd have to seriously hate the front bumper and seats in the R to consider the GTI instead...
-
Another reason to pick the GTI over the R is the VAQ. Nobody has really reviewed the Golf R properly yet and I have a suspicious feeling the Haldex system still understeers, hence why VW did the first press drives on slippery ice to conceal that fact.
-

Hey Guys,
Just to let you know that the next issue of EVO Magazine hits the shelves tomorrow and in it is a huge feature on Hot Hatches.
The Golf GTI features quite heavily and the main feature of modern hot hatches includes both a MK7 GTI and a MK7 R. Both 5 Door, Manual Cars, the GTI is a PP (EVO's own Fast Fleet car) and the R is on the standard 18" wheel option.
A very interesting read and an excellent account of both cars!
I'd highly recommend picking a copy up!

That's the teddy - I subscribe - so I read it last night!
I started off thinking maybe I should have bought an R given the huge praise that they give it (and a full five start rating) ..... but the GTi came out very well up to 8/10ths - which is all I ever use!

Yeah that's the one! Funny enough, I felt exactly the same as GiT1984! Although I love the picture of Jethro Bovingdon looking at the R after he's completely cooked the brakes!

He must have been driving flat out and / or using left foot braking, as I've managed to do multiple "big stops" (three figure speeds) on my private test track (which emulates a dual carriageway with multiple roundabouts) and had nothing but powerful and consistent retardation .....

Really interesting comparison between the Golf R and Seat Cupra. Even more interesting at the end is the revelation that the GTI with PP was quicker round the circuit than the R  . I'm guessing that the reduced weight of the GTI combined with the LSD are giving it the advantage.
The R boys won't be happy

I have been saying this from day one... why do you think the Racing Golf's are always the FWD models and not 4WD?
The VAQ e-diff is pure class ... now all Volkswagen need to do is fit VAQ on both the front rear axels with Haldex 4WD

"Abracadabra! A cloak of invisibility for millionaires"
'It’s weird, isn’t it? There’s a huge market out there for cars that are inspiring to drive but that could pass through a library without causing anyone to look up. Yet the options are so limited that today Boris Johnson is forced to go about his business in a Toyota van. And God knows what the current director-general of the BBC has — a Brompton foldaway bicycle, probably.
Happily, however, help is at hand in the shape of a new Volkswagen Golf. It’s called the R, and I shall say right at the outset that I have not yet driven it, or seen it. And yet it fills my heart with hope because on paper it looks absolutely perfect.
I spent an hour or two on VW’s online configurator this morning, adding all the things I would want fitted as optional extras, and the final price was £34,000. A lot for a Golf. But not a lot at all for what you’re getting here.
Under the bonnet it has the same basic 2-litre turbo engine as you find in the GTI. But by fiddling with the boost from the turbocharger, the valves and the pistons, the engineers have upped the power to nigh-on 300bhp. That’s almost 80bhp more than in the GTI. Which is probably why it’s been fitted with four-wheel drive.
Of course we’ve seen four-wheel-drive Golfs before, and they’ve been very impressive in a straightforward, no-nonsense, keep-you-going-in-snow kind of way. But on the R the all-wheel- drive system is allied to VW’s new electronic differential — pay attention at the back — and that is a combination that makes me drool extensively.
The grip afforded by that diff in a front-wheel-drive GTI boggles the mind, so God alone knows what levels of barnacle tenacity will be achieved by its electronic wizardry and all-wheel drive. I should imagine your face will come off before the car actually loses traction.
The word is that, to drive, this vehicle is sensational, but, better than that, it looks like the sort of Golf that your mum has. It doesn’t even get the red line on the radiator grille that you find on a GTI. You could take an R to a meeting of the Socialist Workers party and they’d embrace you as a brother. It’s that nondescript.
Which for many, many people makes it absolutely perfect.'
Verdict: 'Goes like a rocket, sticks like a limpet. 4/5 stars'
Seems like he's quite excited!

My, haven’t you boy racers grown up
A decade after Driving first pitted the VW Golf GTI against the Ford Focus ST, James Mills and Nick Rufford line up their latest offspring. So which rules the road now?

I SEE Nick arrive before he sees me, and there appears to be a problem. Well, several problems actually. First, who forgot to paint the car? It’s wearing what looks to be Humbrol AA0014, otherwise known as “grey primer matt” enamel paint. If you spent some of your childhood painstakingly assembling Airfix models of HMS Ark Royal, a Supermarine Spitfire or Panther tank, the distinctive shade of primer on our Ford Focus ST will bring back memories of picking apart glue-covered fingers and sniffing at the small tin of primer as the lid pops off.

CRITIC'S RATING
Then there is the car’s styling. I know Ford has been busy giving the Focus ST a makeover for 2015 but since when was the most desirable version of the company’s hottest hatch an, er, estate car? Choosing a performance estate is a bit like an aspiring professional racing driver saying their dream is to make it to Formula One . . . and race for Caterham, the last-placed team on the grid.
Ford says the estate has proved a reasonably popular addition since it joined the range in 2012, accounting for a tenth of annual Focus ST sales in the UK. Presumably these are the boy and girl racers who, after having children, couldn’t bear to be wrenched away from their hot hatch because the pushchair and travel cot wouldn’t fit into the boot.
So why hasn’t Volkswagen done the same? Well, in fact it is about to follow Ford’s lead: at the Geneva motor show next month the company will reveal the Golf GTD estate, a 181bhp diesel for dads in a hurry. Is this a rare admission that the car that twisted the ignition key on the hot hatch movement back in 1977 is being caught up — overtaken, even?
Pah. Nonsense. The diesel-powered estate is still a niche within a niche, whereas the petrol-engined hatchback remains the GTI thousands of British drivers buy and hundreds of thousands more hanker after. And all it takes is one short drive to see why.
Much to the annoyance of engineers at Ford, Honda and Seat, Volkswagen has honed the GTI to a point approaching perfection. The car’s suspension can be adjusted via a touchscreen so that it can be comfortable on the slog to the office and sporty on a Sunday morning run to, um, “collect the papers and milk” via that 20-mile winding B-road.
Best of all, it really works. Where some cars with such gadgets are either as bouncy as a puppy or as scary as an attack dog, the GTI feels just right all of the time.
Volkswagen calls this suspension system Dynamic Chassis Control and it’s an £815 option on the GTI. It adjusts the response of the dampers according to the driver’s chosen settings or, when left in Normal mode, can actively make adjustments based on the driving conditions — such as when rushing back home with Friday night’s takeaway.
When you do rush, the response from the steering, throttle, brakes and (optional) direct-shift gearbox is always unflinching. They get on with the task at hand and work as a team to make the driver feel as though they could trust the GTI come hell or high water. And with the £995 Performance Pack on the car I drove, which adds 10bhp to the engine’s output, comes an electronic locking differential that helps contain the engine’s ample performance. (Although on winter roads and wearing regular Dunlop tyres our test car still struggled for grip in the first two gears.)
And what an engine. The 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit is an absolute cracker. It isn’t new, rather a development of the one that powered the previous-generation GTI, and is codenamed EA888. Yet subtle tinkering to the cylinder head has helped improve its fuel economy by 18%, says VW, and reduce CO2 emissions so that now even the Performance Pack model returns a quite saintly 47.1mpg. With petrol prices as low as they are, why buy diesel?
There appears to be no end to its talents; it can pull with gusto from right at the bottom of the rev range and rev enthusiastically to the red line, plus it sounds great and, best of all, doesn’t run out of puff like an asthmatic in a school running race. Still want that diesel-powered ST?
It’s all a far cry from the model that turns most fans of the hot hatch misty-eyed: the 16-valve GTI Mk 2. Like a toy car, that engine needed winding up before it would do any work, whereas turbocharging and direct fuel injection allow today’s GTI driver to have their cake and eat it.
This is the seventh time around for the GTI and some drivers out there have owned one of each, although probably prefer not to talk about the Mk 3 and Mk 4. They marked a low point for the Golf — like the Steve Martin unfunny years — and allowed companies such as Peugeot to come along and steal VW’s thunder.
VW got its act together for the Mk 5 and hasn’t looked back since — and not only in the way the GTI drives. The styling is just the right side of tasteful and, as ever, the cabin provides a masterclass in sound ergonomic design. This might be one of the most expensive hot hatches on sale but everything about it justifies the price. James Mills
Ford Focus ST, £27,095
ANOTHER week, another wintry afternoon at a racetrack putting a pair of practical performance cars, the Golf GTI and a new Ford Focus ST, through their paces. It seems only . . . hang on, let me check. Crikey, can it really be 10 years since we got these two cars together?
Apparently so, because as I write this I can see my younger self staring out from a newspaper cutting with a blustery Silverstone in the background. Back then the Focus ST was the newcomer trying to challenge the Golf GTI’s dominance of the market.
It was as though the original petrol-powered ST, a racy derivative of Britain’s bestselling Ford Focus, was the young contender taking the fight to the champ of hot hatches. Powered by a fantastic five-cylinder Volvo-derived 223bhp engine (the Swedish car maker was then owned by Ford), the ST boasted a 10% power advantage over its GTI rival.
The only way we could fault it at the time was by pointing out that, unlike the plainer-looking Golf, it had a distinct boy-racer air that would be frowned on by the valet parkers at, say, the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. That and the fact it was bright orange with matching interior that gave one the disconcerting impression of driving a giant tangerine. Those points aside, the ST was technically every bit as good as its costlier counterpart.

CRITIC'S RATING
Now comes an all-new version of the ST, this time in a nicely understated grey that moodily catches the light here at Brands Hatch. It’s taken off its bomber jacket and put on a business suit. A sculpted bonnet and slimmer headlights lend a new look of sophistication, while a chunkier grille, LED lights and hexagonal exhausts hint that this car still means trouble.
But the main difference is under the bonnet; Ford’s latest secret weapon is a tuned turbodiesel engine. This, says the company, gives the ST smoother power delivery, low-down grunt and loads of torque so you can whizz through the twistiest roads with barely a gearchange. In short, the kind of performance to deliver a knockout blow to its German opponent.
First, the good points. The steering is good — tight and accurate — and the fuel economy is impressive at a claimed 67.3mpg; the sort of level that could even make this suitable as a company car. And, er, that’s it. Even putting aside the fact that an increasing number of councils are now punishing car owners for a crime they didn’t commit by charging a diesel levy on parking permits, there is little to recommend this car.
I’ve racked my brain to think of good things to say but all of them seem slight compared with the fact that the engine just isn’t up to it. Forgive the deviation into numbers, but the Golf GTI with the Performance Pack hits maximum torque at 1500rpm and stays there through to 4600rpm. For even better acceleration you can drive it like a sports car in the maximum power range, which is from 4700rpm to near the red line at 6200rpm. In other words, if you’re happy to burn a bit more fuel and let the engine race, it’s great fun (and the engine will come to no harm).
In contrast, the ST’s maximum torque arrives at about 2000rpm — not much later than the Golf’s — but it starts to tail off from about 2750rpm. Sure, it’s got torque aplenty when you’re in the right gear but you need to change up by 3000rpm or it’ll start to feel gutless. Peak power comes a fraction later in the rev range but the engine doesn’t give you much more pulling power than at lower speeds. There’s not much point in revving then — it won’t deliver any extra oomph.
Mills, left, and Rufford prepare to put the Golf GTI and Focus ST estate through their paces at Brands HatchMills, left, and Rufford prepare to put the Golf GTI and Focus ST estate through their paces at Brands Hatch
The acceleration figures bear this out. From standstill to 62mph in the Focus takes a glacial 8.3 seconds compared with 6.4 seconds for the Golf. The ST hatchback is only 0.2 seconds quicker.
So why would Ford ruin a perfectly good hot hatch by putting a diesel engine in it, albeit one with a relatively generous 182bhp (34bhp more than the standard TDCI Focus)? Possibly the weary Ford engineers warned against it but the suits won the argument. Somewhere out there, it seems, there is a market for a car that promises to combine the family-friendly running costs of a diesel with the thrills of bachelorhood. (Ford isn’t alone in trying to exploit it; other manufacturers offer the same sort of thing.)
Naturally enough, Ford insists that its car’s 295 lb ft of torque (compared with 258 lb ft for the Golf GTI) gives it enough urge to justify the ST badge on the boot. The trouble is the VW gives you the best of both worlds: good solid pulling power at low engine speeds, so it is easy enough to get around town in one gear, and on the open road it delivers ever-increasing speed as you keep the throttle buried in the floor mat and the revs climbing towards the red line.
The kindest thing to say is that Ford is saving its best performance for the new Focus RS, a 316bhp all-wheel-drive monster that is expected to go on sale in 2016. Unfortunately even that doesn’t get the company off the hook. The ST commits a worse sin than poor performance. Knowing perhaps that the clatter of a diesel engine is hardly thrilling, Ford has chosen to disguise it with an enhanced engine note.
Like the Peugeot 308 GT we reviewed recently, the ST’s engine sound is “overdubbed” by a “sound symposer”. The car’s computer uses an algorithm (based on throttle position, gear and loading) to create a “realistic” growl that is played inside the car through the speakers. Strangely enough, the soundtrack is tuned to make the car sound like the original ST.
When you’re cruising on the motorway, then, you can believe you’re in a petrol-powered hot hatch. Sadly, when the going gets challenging, the ST diesel drives like, well, a diesel. And where’s the fun in that? Nick Rufford

Great review of the Golf R vs A35 which I know is a car a few have been looking at...

Cabin and noise to the A35 but Golf edges it and he says that based what would he buy with his money.
-
I really like the new A Class and the cabin is superb. Two negatives for me are lack of a space saver and shape of the seats (I looked at a 250 AMG Line). With the amount of miles I do, often rural and at night, a space saver is a must (they could have at least made room for one even if not standard). I also couldn't get comfortable in the seats - it feels to me that the fixed headrest tilts forward too much.
As an aside, I didn't think much of Merc sales staff - weren't that bothered. Maybe they only show interest if you're buying an E Class.

*Hopefully* aside from build quality issues how do you find the TCR compares to the A35?
Obviously the interior is the A35’s tour de force subject to how heavily optioned it is, but how does a 7 plus year old Golf design feel after ultra modern AMG?
How do the two compare in driving dynamics and performance (seat of pants)?
Chance to do your own mini review here Chris!
Reason I ask is a colleague of mine is very interested in leasing or PCPing an A35.

Reason I ask is a colleague of mine is very interested in leasing or PCPing an A35.
The A35 was (in my chosen spec Sun Yellow/Full Aero Pack) a fantastic looking, attention grabbing car. I loved driving it and the tech (when it worked) was outstanding.
The diff in the TCR is great, however it doesn't give you the levels of grip and confidence that the A35 did, in fact the A35 felt like it was stuck to the road, mine only had the passive dampers/suspension and TBH it was crying out of the active setup (the ride was very hard). If I were to buy another one the active dampers would be the first option I would select.
The interior in the A35 was fantastic, however the quality of some of the materials were very questionable. Also I wasn't happy that it had the same seats as normal A class's. I know the Golf in real terms has an "old" interior but I think it still looks good, and its certainly put together better than the A35's was.
Overall I would still get another A35, however I think I would wait until they are about a year old (or mid life cycle) when hopefully Mercedes will have fixed all the issues with them.
If there is anything specific you would like to know, let me know.
-
Thanks for your thoughts Chris.
It’s good to hear you’d get another A35 after all your issues. Early models in a production run with lots of tech can indeed suffer gremlins!
After a yellow A35 Aero I guess the only Golf with enough visual impact is indeed the TCR!
The diff takes a bit of getting used to, traction is amazingly good with it once steering lock is applied. It takes a bit of getting used to as natural tendency on a FWD hot hatch is to lift off before oversteer kicks in, where as the VAQ diff likes you to feed in more power and takes on a very neutral cornering style almost like a mid engined car.
Interesting thoughts about interior build quality too, a friend of mine in the trade said he thought the Golf was better quality inside than the A Class. Not bad for a 7 year old nearing replacement.
One thing my colleague wasn’t sure on was the ambient lighting in the Merc, the top spec cars coming with lots of disco lights but do the lower spec cars have any ambient lighting?
Apologies all for thread hijack!
At least there aren’t many new review links around and this is sort of a mini review!

No worries, I believe the A class comes with quite a lot of the tech from the base models up. I think it is how Mercedes are pushing them vs other brands in the same car class.
The ambient lighting in them does seem to be love or hate, I loved it and to be fair you can have much or as little of it turned on as you want.
Coming from Audi's and BMW's I was surprised at the poor quality of the interiors in the Mercedes, considering they are in the same premium class and price bracket. If you are (as I was) coming from an Audi they build and overall quality of the materials will be a big hurdle to overcome.
-
Thanks for that
My colleague is looking to lease so wants to keep spec as low as possible.
A friend of mine in the trade once said that when Mercedes stopped concentrating on luxury cars and chased the volume fleet market it appeared like they’d hired Renault to do the interiors! Maybe he had a point!

I think he was just mockingly comparing the quality.
Then again maybe Merc headhunted in people to see where costs could be saved, lots of car makers have some strange tie ins with each other that seem mismatches.

I understand the W177 which is the engine which comes in the A class was developed by Renault, so its not a stretch to believe they also had something to do with the interiors.
