I've just bought some wheels for my rallye and they are 8x16 wheels and they have 195/40/16s on them to make them look slightly stretched, the wheels on my mk1 are 6X15 I think and they have 195/50/15s on them. If you use the car every day then I'd say put 195/50s on as the ride will be better, if you're not bothered about comfort and you want a low profile then go for 45 or even 40s. The stretched look for these tyres will depend on the width or your wheels which you don't specify. But if you stretch the tyres too much then make sure you don't fly around corners too fast.

My mk1's on 15s and is lowered about 40mm which I think is low enough and there is some space to go lowere so you might be able to get down to about 60mm. If you want to lower it then get some coilovers so you can adjust the height to whatever you wish.

If you want to know about tyres and tyre sizes then have a look at this website. http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
......now officially dubless.

60 inches?? wow, that is low!lol i guess you mean 60mm? my mk1 is lowered 60mm and at the mo i have some 15" rims (6.5 wide) 195/50/15 tyres on and i dont get any rubbing. i am looking at getting some new 16" (7 wide) and i will be going for 195/40/16 tyres because i dont want too much trouble with clearance

interesting to see how the car will look with 16' wheels on. Just note that your speedo will be out of sync now as you have changed the wheels size, so be careful around the police, you might think you are doing the correct speed when you won't be (your be going faster!!)

Agree on the Coilover route, I'm not sure if you can go 60mm with 16' as it will rub against the front and rear arches.

i had mine dropped 40mm to start with but it just didnt look right, you have to go low with a mk1! 60mm looks better but it could still be lower at the back!

195/45/16 is the correct tyre size if you are not stretching the tyre. you'll have no probs with speedo
i'm having 16x7 front, 16x8 rear being made. and im modding my arches. god only knows what tyres im gonna run yet

i would expect only minor mods on arches with a 16x7 if you were at near standard ET35 offset.
but lowering, well....if you went with a stretch i'd say you could go down some. 40mm+ easy
Nankang do a 165/40/16 but its rare.....

man.....i'm glad i found a good forum, i've been searching for a while since ED38 is shut,
more time to waste now
