16v brakes into a mk1
« on: 06 March 2006, 20:21 »
I know there's been posts about this before but none of them seem to have any definate answers

I'm putting a 16v engine & gearbox into my mk1 so i need better brakes - I've got the whole brake setup from the 16v - the carriers were disconnected at the bottom ball joint, strut & tie rod - so i've got the lot, carriers, hubs, callipers & driveshafts

I'll be using the 16v gearbox and I've measured the driveshafts from the 16v, they're the same length as the mk1's so....

will i be able to connect the 16v brake setup  to my mk1's wishbone/tie-rod/strut

(I have the 16v Master cylinder & servo )

You can't fit the 16v hubs, to fit the 16v discs you will need carriers from a Audi 80 sport (about '83 ish I think). Use the mk1 drive shafts and 16v inner cv joints to match the drive flanges. The 16v m/cylinder and servo is a easy conversion, just swop the clevis from the mk1 setup and it bolts up no probs. You will have to sort out the brake pipes to suit the m/cylinder and fit the b/light switch(es) from the mk1 m/cylinder.

:undecided: if i dont get a proper answer by next weekend i'm going to try it out for myself so i'll keep you posted.

I don't get what's  mean't about hubs not fitting - fitting what exactly??? i didn't plan on using mk1 bearing housings - so the only issue i can see is whether theres a difference in the layout of the mk1 & mk2 bearing housings - which no one seems to know

The mk1 rack is mounted on the bulkhead, mk2 on the subframe, so the steering arms are at a different height, causes all sorts of alignment problems and mk1 steering arms are to short to reach the hubs.
The mk1 strut has a different hole set up where the hub bolts up and is not as wide.
The mk1 ball joint has a smaller pin than later mk2 16v.
There are other problems aswell, I have looked into using mk2 hubs and it is not as easy as it looks, I have a pair of G60 hubs machined to fit mk1 struts and a pair of modified bottom ball joints if you are interested.

 Cheers thats more like the kind of answer i was looking for.  when people say something cant be done but dont give a reason it just makes me think they don't know how

So in theory, if i:-

* use a combination of mk1 & mk2 tierods,

* grind the mk2 carrier to take the mk1 strut (not sure about this one, a spare mk1 strut i have fitted my 16v   carriers?)

* Fit a 16v bottom ball joint to the mk1 wishbone

then i might be able to get them to work  :undecided:

perhaps i should just fit the 16v mastercylinder & servo for now and hold out for a set of 4pots

Ahh, maybe. Big problem is the angle the tie rods have to go thru to meet the hubs, causes all sorts of steering geometry problems. Try it and let us know how you get on, I lost interest after spending to much time on it, get some adapters to fit the calipers and 280mm discs .
