1.8/2ltrTurbo conversion
« on: 29 October 2003, 16:39 »
Anyone got any ideas exactly what is involved in putting a 1.8/2ltr turbo in a mark one golf, i.e. wiring loom, engine mounts and strengthening the structure.  Thanx

8 valve or 16 valve engine, what fuel system do you want to run, what sort of power do you want. Will you do the work yourself?. It is a lot of work  ;).

What 2ltr turbo engine is this?.
I have a 2ltr 16v engine in my mk1,and it has a turbo on it. The 1.8 turbo should fit without to many probs, as long as you use just about the whole donor cars wiring loom and the ECU. Or you could go "stand alone" for the engine management.
Engine should mount up ok, if you use the "o2a" box you will have to modify the mounts or buy a kit, cut holes in the bulk head to run the shift cables and "mix and match" the drive shafts to whatever hubs you will use. Don't take this the wrong way, make sure that you understand what is involved before you undertake a project like this. ;)
Good luck, keep us involved-informed and if you need more info or advice, I'm sure the "gti crew" will help.
Steve.

After a bit more consideration i think it would be more suitable to use a 1.8T but do you have any suggestions for a donor car, is the engine in a vw the same as an audi or skoda? what sort of structural strengthening is needed? seam weld the chassis? still very interested, thanks for advice steve, one other question is how does it go? or need i ask!!!!!

i wouldn't seam weld the chassis, but please don't regard anything i say as gospel, i only looked at doing this conversion and gathered all the info, a person who has actualy done it will be a far more reliable source.

i've heard bad things about seam welding chassis', in crashes they are too stiff, try this out, should give you some info.

It goes very well  ;D, don,t have any HP figures yet but it is booked in for a rolling road session on the last wednesday of the month. Lots of different 20v engines, so do your research, late mk2 would be the simplest conversion due to the central electric fuse box. I didn't weld the chassis, I don't anticipate any problems as long as your shell is in good order (people put vr6 engines in mk2s without any strengtening). I would love to do the 20 valve conversion, but didn't find a donor car for fair money, good luck. Steve.
