Wing mirror glass Mk7.5
« on: 09 April 2021, 14:53 »
Just thought I’d post on here what a good experience I’ve had at my local VW dealer. A few days ago I went out in the car in the dark, and when I got back noticed wing mirror glass (passenger side) was missing? As car only 18 months old I hoped it would be a warranty job, but having a quick look online it seemed unlikely. Anyway I popped in to see them the next day, and they ordered me a new one to be fitted next day FOC under warranty.  :smiley: I was surprised as the car was not purchased from them. So just in case anyone has this issue (which seems quite common), you might be in luck at the main VW dealer.
Hope everyone on here ok.

If the dealer felt that the door mirror glass had dropped out because the adhesive attaching it in place was faulty / defective, that was probably why it was handled as a warranty claim. You don’t have to use the dealer you got the car from for warranty work - for a valid warranty claim, any VW dealer can undertake the work.

A pleasant surprise though if you were expecting to either pay to have it fitted or you were going to do it yourself :smiley:.

The car was bought from an independent at 16 months old, but I was expecting there to be a loophole in the warranty so I’d have to pay. It was a nice surprise as you mentioned.

I might have to give this a go. The glass fell out of my drivers side mirror this evening. Is it likely my warranty will cover this? The car was approved used, purchased in Feb.

This just happened to my near-side mirror glass this evening, time to test the VW All-in warranty plan I have...

The All-In warranty is essentially an insurance product covering sudden mechanical and electrical components so doesn’t provide such wide cover as the original factory warranty. Like other insurance based extended warranty products there are exclusions. There’s a specific exclusion of ‘all bodywork, glass (including heated) and seals’, so I’d expect replacement of a heated door mirror glass to not be covered; check out the All-In warranty terms and conditions at the link below;

VW have kindly not numbered the pages, but the relevant exclusion is on the 7th page.

I see from your forum signature that your car has a Revo Stage 1 map; it would be worth noting that the All-In warranty also has a modifications exclusion; exclusion 7 on the eighth page, so that might give VW grounds for declining legitimate claims for electrical or mechanical failures if in their opinion the failure has been caused by the modification.

During the pandemic the glass came away from the adhesive on my in warranty approval used car. On speaking to the dealer I very much got the impression they wouldn't replace it on the spot.

I ended up buying a pattern part and fitting it myself. Very strange driving out a side mirror.

Thanks for the info and I think you're right, might not be worth trying to claim it. Having looked on eBay I see there are many options for after market glass, anyone recommend one that is a good quality replacement. Or know of another good option like TPS or similar?

My first car had neither door mirrors nor traditional old-style wing mounted mirrors - the only mirror it had was the interior windscreen mounted rear view mirror :shocked:. That was back in the 1970’s in a 1970 Mini and looking over your shoulder when joining traffic or when pulling away from rest became second nature.

You could see out of older cars much better than modern ones but then you needed to given how bad they were if you had an accident!
