I only did about 80 miles but averaged about the same but thought that was good for a petrol car, my Golf does about 32-34mpg which I also think its great for the type of car it is.

By comparison my Leon FR diesel achieved 53mpg average on a journey which was all motorway, no traffic and nothing above 70mph so you're doing we'll with your figures

The 140 CR is exceptionally economical on long steady journeys. We do a 500 miles round trip to Kent every so often. If I keep below 70mpg, my Golf will show 62mpg on the DIS. Starting with a full tank, it will do the whole trip and still show 180 miles to empty when we get back home. Even using it locally on mainly rural A roads, I've never averaged less than 55mpg over a full tank.

With the smaller petrol engines, I seem to get 42-42mpg whether it's the 1.2 or 1.4. Although it only has another 20 odd horsepower, the 1.4 is a much more lively car. It would be the one I would choose if I really had to.

Low to mid 30's as you are getting from your GTI is good I reckon too. My Leon Cupra 1.8T would average about 28-29mpg, so it does go to show that they have progressed.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

On a good run into work I can easily get 39.1 mpg over 37 miles ( say 70% motorway and 30% A/B Roads ) which is pretty good imo.

My average for the car since ownership for all journeys is 27.8 mpg over 3000 miles.
