i just dont understand how qpeng have got such a good reputation for 1.8t management then. you see 1.8t conversions in PVW running it, and dont see many write ups about qpeng blowing up there engine.

i can see where your coming from though, is it really worth risking blowing up my engine to see if qpeng management is good enough...

on paper, looking at the knock sensor thing, it seems like a major flaw. Considering qpeng are based on one engine and thats a TURBOCHARGED 1.8, you have thought he might have taken it into account...

looks like i got more research to do, more questions to ask and a lot of thinking

thanks again :)

Where's the competition?

QPENG is a 'lazy' solution - it's boxed.  If you're afraid of wires, or can't be bothered to figure all that management stuff out, then just buy something that works as a complete solution out of the box.

There are a good range of solutions out there, but they're not as focused so they're not the 'automatic choice'.

OMEX for example - will probably have a map off the shelf, but will want you to buy your sensors from them, if you don't have the precise ones they want for their ECU
Megasquirt - incredibly flexible and if you know what you're doing you can plug in amazingly advanced modules from other people, but it's often supplied as a kit of bits, or it won't be right for your car straight away.

You're dealing with a pretty specialist market.  QPENG have focused on a very slim piece of that market - 1.8Ts all have a range of characteristics that are similar.  I suspect they'll have a range of maps on the shelf to suit the various variants of the 1.8T, but for some reason (and I'd love to know what that reason is) they decided not to include knock-sensing in their ECU.

Thing is, without any specific competition in the market, there's no driver to add this to their product - you want a 1.8T, you go to QPENG.  Like I said - lazy (haha).  £10 says thinking outside the QPENG box will get you more power, better diagnostics and also something that you can carry to your next project and re-use.  If you decide you want a supercharged VR an OMEX or MS box will go with you.  The QPENG will stay on the 1.8, cos that's what it does.

Do it once, do it right.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

thanks for your advice DH, but i will still run qpeng, talking to them and a few mates and the way its mapped, means it doesnt need to run a map sensor. i cant explain it like they did, cause i dont understand too much about it, but what they said made sense.

if it blows it blows :D

yeah qpeng is lazy way, thats why i choose it! LOL :D

i see what you mean about taking it with me to my next project, but i dont think i'd do that, like to keep it running.

update coming soon...

you found the start! not knowing where to start lol. i didnt really know anything about what i was doing. i now know a little more through research online and just by having a go and learning from your mistakes.

i cant wait either! :D just gotta keep putting the time in and it will get done. the fact that a lot of parts of being replaced with new bits and there is quite a lot more to do, with it being a 1.4 base rather than a gti base. also the fact that most of the time i need to figure out what/how/where/which about most things lol.

was hoping to get it to a rolling shell by end of last week, i.e. yesterday. but couldnt get the damn handbrake cables outta the metal sleeves that take them into the car. think the thread end has got caught and it just wont come out! but once they are out, then its just a case of bolting the rear beam on and putting the wheels on.

Whats the difference between the AGU and BAM engine, as the bam has more bhp, is it just the turbo? Is the bam a KO4? And the AGU a KO3? Is it just the turbo, so an agu with the larger turbo would make the same power?

Cheers
