Post by: search on 29 February 2012, 00:22
Picked up a Golf MK3 CL 1.4 last week for £500 taxed and mot for the year. From a middle age women who has kept it in tip top shape. 98k on the clock and serviced every year.

Buying few things here and there as you do.

i'm sure everyone knows what it looks like standard but ill upload a photo for you all to see at the bottom of this.

Things i'm in the middle of doing right now.
spraying wheel arches. (ebay jobby)
sprayed wing mirrors.
spraying side trims.
Spraying front grill. (ebay two line badgeless)
more touch up paint around the car.

Things iv done so far.
Crystal clear rear lights (not sure i like them at the moment might (A) tint them or (B) put old ones back on and tint them)
taken off rear wiper.
sprayed the rear badge Black.
FAKE back box thing. (untill i can get a real one lol)

Things for the near future.
Black vinyl wrap the roof.
angel eye head lights.
clear side repeaters.
crystal clear bumber indicators with fake fogs. (ebay) would like real fogs but haven't a clue how to wire them in :-/
MAYBE TINT WINDOWS!!! still on side line iv had it in all my cars and think might have a change.

Things on my to do list (money savers)
Leather seats.
twin back box.

So far so good mate! I hope my information has been helpful so far :) I think the Red/Crystal rears work well on contrasting coloured cars. I have a set as well but I don't think they suit my car at the moment! Keep it up, and any more questions, just ask and I'll be happy to help!

Seems like a decent al rounder for the money.

Rear lights don't look too bad...  I would be tempted to lightly tint the top half though maybe?

Post by: search on 29 February 2012, 11:03
Hey Dan yeah you have been very helpful thanks. and will keep you updated.

p.s i like the idea of a light tint on the top half. I might just do that later.

more photos tomorrow with the wing arches on and side trims colour match. (maybe light tint on rear lights)

Post by: DanChave on 29 February 2012, 11:17
If you do decide to tint the lights, make sure you use some Lamin-x or similar! That tinting spray NEVER turns out well :/ Plus, Lamin-x is easily reversible, which is always a bonus!

Well today hasn't gone as planned  Ran out of spray paint and both super-stores halfords dont have any. can make me some up double the price mind! and i went to put the arches on taking alot of the paint off so had to touch them up and wait till tomorrow now. This time round im using clamps rather than Masking tape.    :embarassed:

Photos: attempted to touch up bits around the car. Oh and a sticker came in post lulz
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k34/xsjado-man/417143_10150700098990491_753170490_11693428_1429651116_n.jpg)

These wheel arches had nasty ends to them at the bottom.. for that GTI look. Didn't like them so cut them off. then started spraying. these took two cans of paint  it seem more gases were coming out than actual paint.

not the end result youll see that when i get them on the car. (yet to think of a Name for her lulz)

Good little runner you've got there

Will be interesting to see how it looks once you've done your plans for it

If your going for the old crystal lights  at the front then I wouldn't tint the rears, unless you tint the fronts as well

Thanks.
today i tried to be cheap and just dye the door cards. not sure if its work not only time will tell. Then put on the wheel arches took ages as they are crap after market ones..... (any idea if GTi ones will fit on?)

Got my Wife to give a helping hand.. no pun intended. ;-)

now for the wheel arches.

Waiting for front grill to come, and still waiting for halfords to get the write colour paint in so i can do the side trims.

Don't get paint from hellfords....go to a paint shop

Post by: search on 01 March 2012, 22:21
only paint shop i could think of was b&q they didn't seem to do what i wanted. so i went to VW them selfs but felt like a right tit standing in there huge show room, so went True story lol.

ill look around for paint shops. the arches need a re spray as the colour dont match right. i paid £40 for these fake GTI look alike that dont actually line up well around the wheel arch so i no more nails them. only thing is thats for life now .

Door cards looking ok. (maybe if i leave the door open to long when it rains it all wash out ha)

Two - Three years. I find with older cars less goes wrong. had a peugeot 307 and spent to much money trying fix stupid faults all the time, that car was meant to last a long time for me but had it just under a year and gave up lol.
Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: Milby on 02 March 2012, 11:05
i agree with new cars :) im insured on my parents car and it was a c4 mpv thingy lasted 2 and half years and then just died, had so many faults. used to just stop randomly on motorways and stuff so pretty dangerous. my golfs done 141000 miles and since ive had it just had too replace tyres, breather pipe and thermostat  old is always best.
Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: Seanl on 02 March 2012, 13:58
And whats the common denominator???

Both French pieces of sh!te! I can also trump you on the 307, I had mine for a total of 4 months before getting shot!!
Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: Milby on 02 March 2012, 14:37
the funniest thing was it went too 4 different garages and all them didn't have a clue what was wrong with it  they all just said we need to wait for our diagnostics machine to be updated as it wont read the code
Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: search on 02 March 2012, 15:41
Same here but i went to four different garages and each one never had a clue nothing came up on the machine and they all just stand there confused ready to take your cash! such jokes. my 307 just cut out when it liked i did little things like replace throttle body etc, But still did it.

but yes stay away from the french cars.

Paint shop...B&Q

You perhaps should of tried the arches in black...as that what the GTI's have....

How about taking the door cards off and staining them indoors??
Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: search on 02 March 2012, 22:16
Yeah i just though B&Q sell a lot of paint maybe they would.

Door cards have came out ok.
and i'v taken the wheel arches off now, as they didn't actually fit tbh. (aftermarket for you)
New grill came today.

3 layers of prime! went on easy. then same for the actual paint, then lacquer.

about 10 mins between coats and 20 mins before i changed to the next can. first coat i went back and forth while working my way from one end to the other. second coat i pretty much the same just different direction. and third coat mainly looking for bits i might of missed. Looked ok at the time. even when i brought it in to dry looked fine. untill i put it on car :-/

Thinking about it, It was pretty windy out when i was spraying.
but like i said it seem to come out like water.

Good bit of work being done. You planning on lowering it and changing the wheels as would finish it off real nice. Those furry dice need to be dragging on the ground lol!! I have a minted set of front and rear seats out my 80,000 miles gti you could of had for nothing as recently got some leather for my Mk3 project although not much use being so far. Struggling to give these seats away lol.

To day was meant to be "TINT MY RIDE" Brought everything i needed from ebay. watched a few videos on how to do it.

and

AHHHHHHHHHHHH FFS GRRRRRR!!!!!

So yes it went so so wrong. took 4 hours just to try do one door. i didn't want any bubbles, lines etc etc... one min id have a crease next ill have bubbles then iv cut it wrong.

Even heat gun the tint.

anyways though id look around to see how much it cost me to get done. close to £200 for all windows

Might buy more tint give it another go not sure. only cost £6 for 6M something like that of the bay.

Check the dampers aren't leaking, springs are straight (not literally) with no cracks etc, and coils are free to move. A spanner would also be handy although they can be had quite cheaply on the bay of E. Other than that I suppose for £50 your not gonna get a top of the range brand new set. My TA Technics ones were pretty good though, and the JOM ones are apparently quite good for the money.

Great work with the Coke!

Not entirely sure, but think the rubber boot is just a dirt shield for the seal on the damper.

Random but went for a drive and the car now pulls to the right when steering wheel is straight only way to solve this was to have the steering wheel slightly to the left lol.

anyways YEAH CLEAN THEM ALLOYS IS A MUST... thinking polish the lips and then gun metal spray the rest.

Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: Khare on 17 May 2012, 20:47
Was just about to say about the trim. Even if you were colour coding you'd want to paint under it, to avoid old colour from different angles.

Are you going to blend it in?
Title: Re: Golf MK3 CL (Project)
Post by: search on 17 May 2012, 22:27
i'm getting new trims and could't be bothered to take that bit of trim off to do the job LOL.

the car was rusting inside out. turns out the whole panel is rusted from top to bottom due to broken seal on the roof and a rusty hole under the seal, making my boot wet and my back seats. so i used unibond sealant under the seal on the roof and stuck it down. then fixed the hole at the bottom.

My last ones where a pig to keep clean but polished up looked the nuts.

If they arnt lacquered just don't let brake dust settle on them.... I mean I cleaned mine everyday!

no dishes are some silver/very light gold looking paint, i will be making them bare metal polish them up etc but that much later down the road.

since they put them on tho when i break i can hear something rubbing! thinking maybe its the weights they put on as there is not much of a gap from breaks to the back of the alloys!

Under heavy breaking or all he time? Could be tyres catching the coilovers

Little update: but its the little things that make the big things look better ;-)

ok so wanted some center caps when i came across a little DIY with golf mk4 center caps here it was.

Step 1: remove ring and take off little lugs. i shaved them down.

Step 2: Heat up bigger lugs and move them in slightly for a tighter fit.

Done now center caps will fit ATS CUPS!

Step 3: Mask off area i wanted to keep.

step 5: unmask your art work.
