Spraying front grill. (ebay two line badgeless)

Things for the near future.

So far so good mate! I hope my information has been helpful so far :) I think the Red/Crystal rears work well on contrasting coloured cars. I have a set as well but I don't think they suit my car at the moment! Keep it up, and any more questions, just ask and I'll be happy to help!
-
Seems like a decent al rounder for the money.
Rear lights don't look too bad... I would be tempted to lightly tint the top half though maybe?
-
Hey Dan yeah you have been very helpful thanks. and will keep you updated.
p.s i like the idea of a light tint on the top half. I might just do that later.
more photos tomorrow with the wing arches on and side trims colour match. (maybe light tint on rear lights)
-
If you do decide to tint the lights, make sure you use some Lamin-x or similar! That tinting spray NEVER turns out well :/ Plus, Lamin-x is easily reversible, which is always a bonus!
-
Well today hasn't gone as planned  Ran out of spray paint and both super-stores halfords dont have any. can make me some up double the price mind! and i went to put the arches on taking alot of the paint off so had to touch them up and wait till tomorrow now. This time round im using clamps rather than Masking tape. :embarassed:
Photos: attempted to touch up bits around the car. Oh and a sticker came in post lulz
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k34/xsjado-man/417143_10150700098990491_753170490_11693428_1429651116_n.jpg)
These wheel arches had nasty ends to them at the bottom.. for that GTI look. Didn't like them so cut them off. then started spraying. these took two cans of paint  it seem more gases were coming out than actual paint.
not the end result youll see that when i get them on the car. (yet to think of a Name for her lulz)

Photos are taken with phone camera.

Good little runner you've got there
Will be interesting to see how it looks once you've done your plans for it
If your going for the old crystal lights  at the front then I wouldn't tint the rears, unless you tint the fronts as well
-
Thanks.
today i tried to be cheap and just dye the door cards. not sure if its work not only time will tell. Then put on the wheel arches took ages as they are crap after market ones..... (any idea if GTi ones will fit on?)

Got my Wife to give a helping hand.. no pun intended. ;-)

now for the wheel arches.

Waiting for front grill to come, and still waiting for halfords to get the write colour paint in so i can do the side trims.

Good luck with the arches and the door cards
Don't get paint from hellfords....go to a paint shop
-
only paint shop i could think of was b&q they didn't seem to do what i wanted. so i went to VW them selfs but felt like a right tit standing in there huge show room, so went True story lol.
ill look around for paint shops. the arches need a re spray as the colour dont match right. i paid £40 for these fake GTI look alike that dont actually line up well around the wheel arch so i no more nails them. only thing is thats for life now .
Door cards looking ok. (maybe if i leave the door open to long when it rains it all wash out ha)
-
looking fairly good man ! :) i need to get coulour coded bumpers, and i need to colour code my badgeless grill, and just ordered tinted rear lights ! :)
long you planing on keeping ?
-
Two - Three years. I find with older cars less goes wrong. had a peugeot 307 and spent to much money trying fix stupid faults all the time, that car was meant to last a long time for me but had it just under a year and gave up lol.
-
i agree with new cars :) im insured on my parents car and it was a c4 mpv thingy lasted 2 and half years and then just died, had so many faults. used to just stop randomly on motorways and stuff so pretty dangerous. my golfs done 141000 miles and since ive had it just had too replace tyres, breather pipe and thermostat  old is always best.
-
And whats the common denominator???
Both French pieces of sh!te! I can also trump you on the 307, I had mine for a total of 4 months before getting shot!!
-
the funniest thing was it went too 4 different garages and all them didn't have a clue what was wrong with it  they all just said we need to wait for our diagnostics machine to be updated as it wont read the code
-
Same here but i went to four different garages and each one never had a clue nothing came up on the machine and they all just stand there confused ready to take your cash! such jokes. my 307 just cut out when it liked i did little things like replace throttle body etc, But still did it.
but yes stay away from the french cars.
-

Paint shop...B&Q
You perhaps should of tried the arches in black...as that what the GTI's have....
How about taking the door cards off and staining them indoors??
-
Yeah i just though B&Q sell a lot of paint maybe they would.
Door cards have came out ok.
and i'v taken the wheel arches off now, as they didn't actually fit tbh. (aftermarket for you)
New grill came today.
-
Arches didn't fit! That sucks.. suppose you can't send them back now they are painted. Try stuff out first next time. :lipsrsealed:
-
Just won these. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-mk3-interior-seats-/260966166589?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc2cbb03d&autorefresh=true#ht_500wt_1202
Arches are now off.
-
Front grill update. paint came out patchy but it comes out the can like water. this took a whole 300ml Can!

More updates next week with new seats.
-
cheap cans usually have crappy nozzles on them, which will affect the spray pattern... what cans did you use?
-
some Halfords cans. Going to try find some paint shop near me.
-
hmm i use halfords cans and they always seem okay, make sure you use nice even strokes when spraying
-
Looking good mate! Nice purchase on the seats as well :)

Stick them in hot water for a few mins before using them, really get a good spray then!

What was your method?... were you applying very thin coats, giving each coat enough time to dry and building it up?

3 layers of prime! went on easy. then same for the actual paint, then lacquer.
about 10 mins between coats and 20 mins before i changed to the next can. first coat i went back and forth while working my way from one end to the other. second coat i pretty much the same just different direction. and third coat mainly looking for bits i might of missed. Looked ok at the time. even when i brought it in to dry looked fine. untill i put it on car :-/
Thinking about it, It was pretty windy out when i was spraying.
but like i said it seem to come out like water.

Good bit of work being done. You planning on lowering it and changing the wheels as would finish it off real nice. Those furry dice need to be dragging on the ground lol!! I have a minted set of front and rear seats out my 80,000 miles gti you could of had for nothing as recently got some leather for my Mk3 project although not much use being so far. Struggling to give these seats away lol.
-
pick these up £30 mate next town over so not to bad. needs a bit of a clean. and yeah planning on lowering and i'm debating Mini cooper Alloys (new one) lol. back box next then on to lowering then the alloys. and other bits n bobs along the way.
-
Still on the side line to tint my windows to, not real dark tho.

To day was meant to be "TINT MY RIDE" Brought everything i needed from ebay. watched a few videos on how to do it.
and
AHHHHHHHHHHHH FFS GRRRRRR!!!!!
So yes it went so so wrong. took 4 hours just to try do one door. i didn't want any bubbles, lines etc etc... one min id have a crease next ill have bubbles then iv cut it wrong.
Even heat gun the tint.
anyways though id look around to see how much it cost me to get done. close to £200 for all windows
Might buy more tint give it another go not sure. only cost £6 for 6M something like that of the bay.
-
I didn't the rear screen of a Fiat Punto Van years ago and vouched never to do it again!
-
Couldn't let all that tint go to waste (even tho i wasted a lot trying) gave it one more bash today.

-
That is the GTI splitter (isn't it )
-
Yeah man, the deeper splitter is the VR6 splitter! Although, most of the time not even the VR's have them from standard lol!
-
My bad.
-
Rookie mistake man, don't worry about it ;) but yeah, a VR splitter would set the front end of nicely :)
-
Forget the splitter, save your money towards some decent lows! Wont need a deep front then. :smug:

Fingers cross iv got some FK coilover for just £50 guy says have rust but can be clean up and all works fine.
-
That sounds like a bargin!
-
Another bargin came my way some fk coilovers used for two weeks. guy wanted £100 and he will fit them. i was just about to leave to go see him, when he text me saying sorry i forgot my friend was meant to buy them and hes coming round tonight for £125...
ill go look at these other fk for £50 like i stated. what condition should i stay away from?
-
Check the dampers aren't leaking, springs are straight (not literally) with no cracks etc, and coils are free to move. A spanner would also be handy although they can be had quite cheaply on the bay of E. Other than that I suppose for £50 your not gonna get a top of the range brand new set. My TA Technics ones were pretty good though, and the JOM ones are apparently quite good for the money.
-
Well here they are. didn't notice till i got home that the front ones. the rubber shoe things inside the springs seem to be broke :-/ is this bad?

-
Great work with the Coke!
Not entirely sure, but think the rubber boot is just a dirt shield for the seal on the damper.
-
Yh I don't think it's anything major
-
ok cool thanks guys. will be putting them on sometime over weekend. not even sure what height these are set at. may need to buy a C spanner.
-
Nice! They have come up alright eh? How much did you get these for in the end?
-
£50 and might get the local garage to fit them ha.
-

There pritty easy to fit urself bud
-
:-( well wont be fitting them on this weekend as planed as the guy who was going to help me his Allen key rounded off :-/ just looking around now what tools i need to do it myself cant be that hard.
-
Spring compressors, 7mm allen key and 17mm socket iirc, and thats about it I think.
-
haha.. I forget the wonders of coke.
and people drink that sh*t!
-
You don't even need the spring compressors if your fitting coilovers :)
-
5 hours to do the front one. never using hand tools for such job again lol. will be back done in the morning.

-
Really thats cool. i wont be doing it any time soon tbh not till i get some power tools lol.
the back coilovers spring was really loose is that normal?
-
Found out what that noise was. i forgot to tighten the wheel nuts on driver side front wheel such a rookie mistake. all sorted now lol.

-
Looks 100% better!
-
looking loads better mate but defo need a clean up lol
-
Random but went for a drive and the car now pulls to the right when steering wheel is straight only way to solve this was to have the steering wheel slightly to the left lol.
anyways YEAH CLEAN THEM ALLOYS IS A MUST... thinking polish the lips and then gun metal spray the rest.
-
Are all the tyre pressures the same? That might be why it's pulling to the left.
Yh polished and gun metal combo sounds like a plan
-
looks gd buddy. check tyre pressures. and imo another 20mm drop on the front will finish it nicely
-
yeah i though the front would look better dropped a bit to ha, just i have no C spanners ill get some off the bay ASAP.
all tyres were 20 psi now iv put them all up to 30psi so ill see how it is tomorrow.
-
yeh get a c spannr, i adjusted mine for a year with out one and destroyed the adjusters nearly
-
Those alloys look just like my old set I had before the Porker rims :) Are they Lenzos? If they are, try finding some Audi 80 centre caps, they'll fit right in there an look sweet as a nut!
-
yeah lenso mesh and thanks for the tip man.
-
Photoshop of the root i might go with the alloys, its a bit out there mind. Opinion are more than welcome dont hold back lol.

I just went back two pages to the pic with the stealies and without the drop! Looks cracking now! Such a difference, spot on!
-
I agree with Sean! Such an improvement with the new alloys and a healthy beating with the lowering stick :)
-
Thanks guys, just got to treat some rust. Might get a twin universal back box just for looks. keep it like it for a year then either go mk3 GTi (vento front end) or mk2 shall see in a year. haha.

Center caps came.... DONT FIT!!! :-(

Looks not a bad job takes your eye of it anyway. But unless the rust has been treated or removed it will be showing through again in a matter of weeks.
-
Why didn't you remove the trim? Or have you plans to colour code?
-
Was just about to say about the trim. Even if you were colour coding you'd want to paint under it, to avoid old colour from different angles.
Are you going to blend it in?
-
i'm getting new trims and could't be bothered to take that bit of trim off to do the job LOL.
the car was rusting inside out. turns out the whole panel is rusted from top to bottom due to broken seal on the roof and a rusty hole under the seal, making my boot wet and my back seats. so i used unibond sealant under the seal on the roof and stuck it down. then fixed the hole at the bottom.
-
Well after the epic fail but major profit on those Audi canter caps decided id go for ATS cups. picked these up today £100 need tyres now.

Looking good on the cups dude :)
-
Are the dishes just smooth metal?
My last ones where a pig to keep clean but polished up looked the nuts.
If they arnt lacquered just don't let brake dust settle on them.... I mean I cleaned mine everyday!
-
Should of gone for smaller tyres :lipsrsealed:
Lower the car a bit n it'll be lookin sweet, nice buy
-
no dishes are some silver/very light gold looking paint, i will be making them bare metal polish them up etc but that much later down the road.
since they put them on tho when i break i can hear something rubbing! thinking maybe its the weights they put on as there is not much of a gap from breaks to the back of the alloys!
-
these are my old tyres, couldn't wait to get new ones. when i do get new ones thinking 175/50 or 195/45 but yes the front end needs lowering very much so. just no C spanners.

Under heavy breaking or all he time? Could be tyres catching the coilovers
-
i think just under breaking, Hmmmm is this bad? was told 195/50 would be fine on them. there 7j 15 et28

Easiest ray to check is have a look on the inside tyre wall, and see if it's warn at all

Little update: but its the little things that make the big things look better ;-)
ok so wanted some center caps when i came across a little DIY with golf mk4 center caps here it was.
Step 1: remove ring and take off little lugs. i shaved them down.
Step 2: Heat up bigger lugs and move them in slightly for a tighter fit.
Done now center caps will fit ATS CUPS!
Step 3: Mask off area i wanted to keep.

Well it all came through and sadly still have my mid section intact, I assumed the extra pipe i brought was to delete the mid section but when i took it to the garage it didn't it just replaced original pipe. So ill have to take my car to top gear in Bridport to sort out a custom straight through pipe.
anyways phone video of how it sounds with mid section still on. (anyone have any suggestions on a straight through pipe?) THANKS!!!
