Sorry if this has been asked before and is common problem, but i don't need my keys in the ignition, or the car turned on to use my stereo, this means it doesn't go off with the car so im worried about it running the battery down? Any advice?
Merry Christmas Guys - im asking now as iv just got a new head unit today! Can play my ipod through the aux port, i love it!

You've got your live and switched live wires the wrong way round.

switch the RED and YELLOW wires. YELLOW is the wire that is always live from the battery, normaly used to keep the battery charged so you dont loose your stations, and the RED is the live from the ignition, so when u turn on the car, the stereo has power

nice one guys, unfortunately i couldn't just plug and play as some1 butchered the loom b4 i got it, so i had to wire it in permanently, ill switch them tomorrow. :grin:
if any of this christmas booze is out my system, ill take it 4 a spin with some decent audio for a change, i need to replace the rear 6X4's and will prob replace the front door pod speakers.

if the original wires have been butchered as you say..then chances are..switching the red n yellow round still wont help as they may both still be running off one LIVE cable further down the line...so best to get the ole multimeter out n checking if you even have a ignition LIVE..perhaps one v the spare cables that have been ignored n taped up!
try the switching of wires first, but if its always on, i dont think it will resolve your problem. as it will result in the same situation whether the red goes to yellow and vice versa. theyr both most likely wired to 1 constant LIVE cable from the car side of the loom.
chek that out n see how u get on!

I butchered my own loom as someone SEMI butchered it before me, they may be switched, but the chances are they were only butchered becuase the last owner CBA to get a conversion cable from car to HU.

Thats whats on mine atm :sad: Ive got both the red and yellow cables going to the same place :sad:
Is there any quick and easy fix? dont want to mess about wiring it into the ignition just want it to turn off completly and not drain the battery when its aparently off.
Dont need to worry about keeping my radio stations tuned either btw so anything would be a help :)

Depends, follow the loom back as far as you can, use a multi meter to test the wires. If you just have a live to the battery and no iginition wire i wouldnt know how to make a new one. But providing you car had one originally, it must be in there somewhere! Just follow the loom back as far as you can, take some dash out. And you will find it somewhere. The last owner probably just thought it was broken as when the engine was off and he was fitting his HU. there was no power.

Yer the bit thats been bodged with the red + yellow into one is right near the head unit so hopefully it wont be too far to find the other one. Will it be one going to the ignition?

Should be yeah, its just some loser cut it as they didnt know, it might be caught up further down the line somehwere, but its in there somehwere, just need to have a good hunt around!

Um, if it isnt, then i wouldnt know where the wire would have to be connected to the ignition switch. BUT you could attach it to a positive of something else that comes on with the iginition.

Had a look behind my head unit and couldnt find a thing. Theres loads of wires and i havent got a clue where it would be.
Not going to bother tbh my dads being a prick and so he wont help me now so my cars gonna sit and rot :sad: My dad wont even let me charge the battery the thingy

Sorry to hear that, cant u jump it from ur mams? of get urself a battery charger, 20quid or so?
oh and its sort of on topic, did u order any JBL stuff? or go with another brand, got any info on what JBL is like, im lookin for some 6X4's

Nah she wont let me as she will get shouted at by him. Cant get a battery charger as he wouldnt let me charge it. Its my grans charger hes got as it is because he doesnt have a car one.
Didnt order any JBL stuff unfortunatly :sad: looking for somewhere to rent atm so havent got the spare cash :cry:

Ok its all calmed down a bit round mine now :laugh:
Went outside and tried starting my car again, started first time :S sometimes i think that its not the battery lol! was giving out 10.5v yesterday and my dad reconed that wasnt enough.
Anyway so i dashed out and got petrol and drove around for a bit and came back having left the house open. DOH!
Nevermind all is well here now. Ive turned on the powersave thing on my head unit and im going to use the meter thing to see if its helped at all.
If it has i wont worry about wiring it to the ignition but if its still the same then im gonna have to piss about tomorrow doing it :sad:
I might try and 'mod' one of the blank dash inserts into a switch if i can :undecided: might be easier than wiring to the ignition but we shall see tomorrow!

nah its kool man, just been out 4 a buzz in the car myself, need to get petrol soon but want to run it till empty so i get my MPG worked out, off to a meet tonight, well excited! lol
also got a few parts i want 2 buy so im gona investigate he prices :cool:

Sounds sweet mate. Ill be interested to know your mpg as i dont think mines doing too well atm! havent had a chance to work it out but i think its costing close to 25p a mile atm lol.
Went out and used the thingy on the battery again and there wasnt anything draining the battery today so i have no idea why the radio appeared to have been left on. Nevermind ill just see how it goes and may need a new battery in a couple of weeks if it keeps up.

Not sure ive been filling up when it gets around the quater tank mark and it costs around £40. Slowly running out of money til payday so have only been putting £20 in lately lol.
Guessing it would be around £50 for a full tank :undecided: tesco was 99.9p a liter today so its dropped a lil bit.
How bout yours?

Mine costs £50 from dry, and its still 101.9 here, or one place is 114.9 (screw that)

sory to butt in ur conversation fellas but just a point to add with regard to your stereo ignition problem...
i'v played with a fair few mk2's where ther is actually an ignition LIVE but on the other hand i'v also come across some of the earlier models that didnt have ignition LIVE's. Mite b worth checking your cigi lighter socket to see if that activates via ignition...if so...then you can always patch a wire from that live to use as your new Ignition LIVE.
other thing to try is if you are unable to identify an ignition from any of the spare wires from the butchered job from your multimeter...mite b worth goin over your fuses both inside the cabin and engine bay (if applicable) as it may have jus fused and the previous owner didnt think of checking fuses!???

I wasnt out driving last night as my car wouldnt start in the day so decided to get wrecked lol.
Im out driving today if my batterys ok still! Maybe ill see you. Saw a mk3 gti at the lights in town earlier if that was you? Was a similar colour to the one in your sig and a P reg i think! :undecided:

lol, that it might be, i got pulled by the old bill, i went to ipswich to the dee's after, was LOADS of cars out. Got pulled over and the old vehicle check rubbish. But i hadnt done anything wrong, so was all good :D

This isnt going well - My cig lighter isnt a switched live either, cant find one anywhere.

Ryt, iv solved the issue, after a bit of searching i decided to take a switched live from my heated rear window screen button, used a snap connector to run a wire from that to the radio - now when i switch the car off it turns the radio off but keeps my stations as well
Happy Days - i suppose this wasn't 100% necessary but i prefer it that way

Well done :D Does the stereo loose power slightly when you turn on the rear screen?
Always wondered, suppose it depends on the size of the cable.

Just wired to different places so it turns on and off with the ignition?
