Title: The old 'pops n bangs' question
Post by: Jen_mk7.5_GTI on 24 March 2021, 15:06
Afternoon all

GTI Mk7.5 2018 NON GPF 6speed DSG

i swear on heavy foot the other day i got not only a fart but what can only be described as a wee pop - now i was of the belief that P&B had to be mapped in unless you have the clubsport which, i believe, have overrun as standard

The car is NOT mapped

Any input please

Thanks Jen :)

We have a MK7 manual and after we did the resonator delete it now pops but only when losing traction :smug:

Basically what I'm wondering, is it possible to map in the overrun similar to the Clubsport on a standard GTI

I think the noise from the CSS is actually more to do with the backbox than a mapping in particular.

The CSS backbox fits onto a Mk7 easily and a Mk7.5 with a bit of buggery.

I did wonder about this. I spoke to someone at Awesome GTI and they seemed to think it was more software based. I've seen a lot of videos of people adding the CSS backbox to their standard GTI's but the overrun doesn't seem to be there, only on the CSS themselves. I actually really want to know at what point in the process it happens, just not sure how to find out haha.

When remapped, you can get an extra squirt of fuel into the cylinder before the outlet valve closes, unburnt fuel goes into the exhaust, heats up, goes pop.

Used to risk shattering the CAT in older vehicles, not sure if it still does. Seems a strange waste of fuel to me and my engineering brain.

Most 'back street' tuners will write a pops and bangs remap for anything, as evidenced by the number of Fiesta's and Focus's running around with ~100bhp but sounding like Group B rally cars.  As AS said, it's just dumping unburnt fuel in to a very hot manifold so does nothing for performance and must cause damage somewhere in the system.

For the Mk7 a CSS backbox will improve the sound, TCR backbox does the same for a Mk7.5.  They both reduce exhaust back pressure so might offer a bit of a crackle on overrun from high revs for a standard GTI.

I was looking at a video from a guy who "tunes" BMW exhausts.... he basically takes the rear box and cuts it open and inserts bits to make it more straight through.

Without the mod, the car does make a little bit of noise but its lost in all of the twisty pipework.... straighten it out and the thing sounds insane.

It seems to me that there must be a "safe level" which is almost an OEM option has some of the Clubsports and TCR's seem to do it, I think if you're running a setup with a full-on machine-gun-like overrun map you're probably going to melt your cat. But I'm starting to think that if it's mapped in correctly for a stock cat you could achieve quite a nice, subtle sound?

I'd guess you probably could do it somehow.... however doesn't both the CS/S and the TCR use a different turbo? Could the tune for the bigger turbo be the reason why they do it?

Hmm I guess that is a possibility but as far as I'm aware the cats are still the same between the two? Unless they're using a freer-flowing cat to gain some of the extra power from the CS/TCR but if that was the case surely someone should've figured that out by now and we'd all be retrofitting CS/TCR downpipes to our GTI's.

I don't think I've seen anyone mention any exhaust system differences other than the backbox (well certainly not VS GTI's of the same MY)

Another thought on this over the weekend.

Someone close to where I live owns a 20 plate Leon Cupra with a stock exhaust system and that has some really nice subtle pops and burbles, so again how is Seat able to do this on stock systems but not VW?

Ended up replacing the full system with the scorpion catback non res

Sounds tremendous very deep growly but yet to see if pops - for the record, i do not want pops/bangs personally i think they sound daft (just my opinion) all i wanted was a deep throaty growl which the stock exhaust does not provide so far so good and a MASSIVE bargain at £325 !

I run the Golf Owners Club Scotland and one of the lads was trading in his TCR  for a Yaris GR so got first dibs on it he only had the TCR for 10 months exhaust done 2k if that think it was £700 new he was selling off all the bits he had on for a quick sale

Wow, how did you get it so cheap?

Well, yes on acceleration, we did our drive to Ayrshire last weekend with the group and my son said it was droney but not for me i love it :) just take your foot off the pedal and it settles, so CC on chill at 70mph then when the wee fiestas pull along she can be noisy foot to the floor  defo more drone than my res delete had but as i say doesnt bother me

Damn! I am very jealous indeed, that's such a bargain! Any drone?

I've heard people hate the Scorpion, even resonated.... but we've seen on here that people all have different sensitivity to noise levels.

I was quite taken aback when i got the car i expected it to have a proper noisy cold start (non GPF) but it was so quiet and really only parped on acceleration so paid the old £60 for a custom res delete @ C&C in Glasgow and loved it i had only planned to replace the standard tips but for the cost of tips and fitting at around £180 decided to just leave it and then the scorpion came up really pleased with the sound off it now its what i expected a GTI to sound like as stock tbh or close to anyway

I'm still really tempted to invest in the CSS backbox myself

Modified the factory rear silencer on mine, improved the flow and adds a little more volume.

You definitely hear the exhaust more when you're giving it some yet when you idle or cruise it sounds tame.
Zero drone under any conditions, not obnoxiously loud and it's perfect.

I've linked two videos at the bottom of that post to give some idea of the sound.
