I can get close to 700 miles from a tank in my 140 CR.

700 to a tank?!? Bloody hell I'm lucky if I reach 440 in my 140 PS.
Think the best I got was when I went to Sunderland last week for the Coldplay gig and drove at 60mph all the way. I managed to get 550 out that tank.

You must have something wrong, I get 550 miles from my Passat V6 TDI day to day. (albeit from a 62 liter tank) If I do a long steady motorway drive without using cruise in the Golf, I can get around 65mpg according to the computer. That would give a theoretical range of 780 miles.

I only get about 500-550 in my 170ps the only thing wrong with me is my heavy right foot, i could never get 780 miles from a tank i would die of bordom first 

I can manage for the short commute to work but the rest of time drive normally

I've seen 72mpg on the mfd but that is when travelling A roads.
My general commute to work and back is 24 miles all in, mostly on a deserted motorway. But given I am always late in leaving I tend to go xxx fast so that is probably my downfall.

My rough maths make your mpg around 44mpg, which is pretty good when pushing on. Drive a GTI the same way and it'd be way down in the 20's. It's all relative really.
