Title: Bodywork quotes
Post by: ace on 28 May 2009, 15:26
right just been to get some quotes for some bodywork on my vr6. both rear arches and front wings. been quoted from £450 to £700.

however when i asked them how they would do it, one place said they would use fibreglass and another place said they would cut the arches and weld new pieces onto the arches.

which way is the better way to get them done?????

the best way is to cut and replace

Cut and replace them, athough the front would be cheaper done with new wings.

Once they have done this, how are they going to spray it, as you will want the front wings to blend into the doors and bonnet, and the rear wings to blend into the door and boot..... Could be costly to get right.

Rust needs cutting out and new metal welding in.

most likely to get new front wings put on, they said they will blend it all in with the rest of the car.

only thing that confused me is why they would use fibreglass as i was under the impression they would cut and weld a new piece on

fibre glass is not a problem mate really is not that bad but i would allways cut and replace the whole arch the best bet would be you to supply the bits mate ie you bolt the wings on an just let them weld and paint the front wings and rear arch i personall would re skin the whole rear quarter if i was going to do this job

If you fibre glass it, it will just rust again over time, and then the fibre glass will fall out.

Cut and replace the rears
Remove and replace new front wings.

Make sure that they acid etch prime the bare metal before priming, but all bodyshops should do this.  Though there was this one time, I heard of someone who had his classic Porsche restored and the paint started falling off.

Dont forget that rust is terminal and when its started unless you cut it out it will comeback eventually.

Stay away from the fibreglass posse unless youre just after selling the car on ebay.  LOL
