Golf Gti - Funny Noise Around Fuel Tank
« on: 27 March 2006, 17:39 »
Hi people im new!

Ive recently bought a new Mk2 Golf Gti 8v and its been very good.
Basically ive been getting a constant noise from around the OSR near the fuel
tank. Its hard to explain the noise but its a sort of humming noise (like a speaker
when its broken !)

Any ideas what this is and how i can fix her :)

Many thanks in advance! Adam

Thats the fuel pump, u can fix it by unplugging it but then it wont run anymore

Seriously though, if its very loud replace the lift pump as when these get weak the main pump has to work harder to compensate.  If its just a low hum don't worry, perfectly nomal.  You should just be able to hear it over the engine inside the car when your sat at idle :)

Edit: The lift pump is under the round black cap under the boot floor.

Ok if its not a constant noise then summat aint right, 1st thing to do is remove and clean up all the electrical connections to the lift pump and the main pump.  Then try a different fuel pump relay, if that don't fix it replace is the in tank pump first as its the cheaper of the 2, then look at the one under the car.

If yours is a later one >87 it'll be a digi, earlier and it'll be a K-Jet.  An 8v/16v K-Jet pump is suitable for both types, but a Digi pump wont be man enough to run a K-Jet engine.

You might want to do the fuel filter at the same time, but thats up to you :)

How on earth can you take a pump out inside a plastic tank

The noise, is constant dude so i guess i replace just the top lift pump yea?

Where can i get one of them from?

The lift pump is fitted to the top of the fuel tank, you'll see it under the black cap inthe boot :)

You can get them new from http://www.gsfcarparts.com or second hand from the classifieds, ebay, scrappies etc.

lift pump:
18389 FUEL PUMP-IN TANK  G2 1.8 8v F.Inj 8/83 >10/91  24.30

Main pump:
18370 FUEL INJECTION PUMP  G2 1.8 8v F.Inj 8/83 >2/87  94.50
This will be a k-jet pump, which will work on digi but be more powerful, and is the same price as the digi one.
