  • I'm kind of a big deal...
So the car went to VW last night, and they rung me up at about 10:30 this morning with the results of their 30 minute (£45 + vat) inspection.  Apparently they identified very quickly that the door module is fine, apparently it's the actual lock that's broken.  I've told them to go ahead with it, will be all done by tomorrow afternoon.  Total is £230 apparently.

Right.  The guy told me they had time left on the 30 minute inspection, so gave the car a quick once over.  They've found the following problems.  I've starred the MOT failures (according to VW), and the prices are VW quotes.

£316.20 - Dash clock digital display (I've known for ages that my HIS is broken.  Ridiculously over priced quote for fixing it.)
* £167.39 - Rear discs and pads (They say my pads are 80% warn, and my discs are completely warped.)
* £339.46 - Suspension Control Arms (Guys I've NO idea what this is!!  Is this important, how much are these things?)
* £143.82 - Exhaust Centre Bracket (Apparently it's come loose, but the rubber fits are holding the centre on.  No idea what they mean.)
* £97.34 EACH - Front tyres (I have 3mm tread left apparently.)
* £46.90 - Brake fluid (Surely that's got to be the most overly inflated price of the lot?  Isn't brake fluid like £5?)
* £19.17 - Wiper blades

Their quote for all the "essential" work comes to £911.42.

He also said the CAM belt needed changing, but it was done 1 year ago, and has only done 5,000 miles since then.  Brake fluid was also replaced at the same time, 10/07/07.

Brakes aren't a problem.  I'm picking up some Mintex 312mm discs and pads for the front, and new rear Mintex discs and pads tomorrow, £112.98, bargain!  Tyres I'm not worried about, I can get them done for much cheaper elsewhere.  Brake fluid and wiper blades are also a minor concern to me at the moment.

Could you guys take a look at this and tell me what's what with the other things?  I'm rather gullible, so don't know how much of this is true, and what will really be an MOT failure.  My next MOT isn't due until 18/02/09.

This is the thing.  My technical knowledge is currently about that of a small African tribesmen with only one arm.  VW know this, so I've no doubt they're trying to rip me off.

What they don't know if I'm a member of golfti.co.uk, and the guys here hopefully WILL know what's what :)

Well I'm about as technically minded as a used condom but I thought if the brake discs are warped, you would feel some sort of sensation through the wheel... :huh:

Brakes are generally fine, but under heavy braking they're very lacking, and make a crunching noise like part of the car has fallen off!
