STEERING RACK ISSUE
« on: 04 January 2006, 13:27 »
Took my GTi in to Spirit today.

They did the service (14,000 miles).

I also asked them to check out the awful noise when turning the steering wheel at low speed.

It turns out there's a known problem with the steering rack.

Apparently a new rack doesn't fix it.

VW are working on a repair fix, but haven't released it to service yet.

They've also had to order in a new switch for the petrol filler cap - It keeps opening itself!

Eric

Yep mine does it too, stationary or at low speeds when you put left lock on there is a grinding noise, like somethings under serious strain.  I took it back to VW last month (along with the rattles) for them to have a look at. They also said it was a known problem with no fix yet.

I've got that noise too (done 10K miles). I was going to book it in to be looked at but maybe I'll wait a while...

For those that remember my awful first month, I'm pleased to say that since the fix, the car's been superb. Only issue is the steering column noise

okay.. after a bit of research and a chat with a friendly vag tech. i have a bit of info...

# Range of models affected (All MK5), Builds SEPT, OCT, NOV, DEC
# Fault (Classed as a comfort issue), steering rack.
# VW have stopped using these racks. (So from January builds issue will be fixed)
# Not a safety issue DOES not affect performance.
# All cars with issue will be recalled and fitted with new rack.
# No car will be accepted as rejects for this reason.
# Noise knocking/Banging/scraping

they became aware of the problem some time in november.. no idea why they have chosen only to recall the september onwards cars.. as its clearly affecting cars build as early as march.. all mk5 cars not just the GTI.

post made sticky so all mk5 owners get to see this.

so basically if your mk5 is making the noise (when turning left at slow speeds/stationary) make sure you're dealership know about it so you get bumped to the top of the list when vw release the 'fixed' steering racks.

I see this steering rack issue has now reached the Watchdog pages of this week's AutoExpress.

Hopefully it will put a bit pressure on VW

Interesting how the definition of words changes in different countries.
So a noisy steering rack in Germany is classified as a comfort factor.
Whereas
A noisy steering rack in the UK, is classified as a discomfort factor :smug:
Cheers

Had a drive in a 55 plate dsg (500miles on clock) 5dr today and at parking speed the steering did make a little noise.  I don't think I would have noticed it, if hadn't been made aware of it through this post.

It was totally insignificant taking everything else into consideration.
