Attention - New Rust Point - Front Arches Chassis
« on: 18 March 2024, 18:50 »
Folks,

Just letting you all know for those that keep cars for long periods of time. When I was removing the foam triangles under the front arches I noticed the following on the body:

The plastic arch liners are rubbing through the token amount of paint VW have sprayed on at the factory and leaving it as a bare metal exposed area on the body, and will undoubtably become a problem later on.

I'm currently repairing mine but not sure what to put over it once neutralised and resprayed, seam sealer?

Aren’t (according to the brochure) body panels galvanised and (this is from my dim and distant past schooldays 45 years ago) a galvanised surface can ‘heal’ itself?

once sealed maybe something like

Helicopter tape ?
After all the issues with the foam on the MK5 wheel arches you'd have thought VW might have learnt a lesson.

Galvanised surfaces can still corrode unfortunately, and abrasion can remove the zinc coating from the steel.

One side reacted fairly heavily to the rust neutraliser and the other had a much smaller reaction, I resprayed with graphene primer and put a bit of underseal over it for now, but will be going back later and adding better protection. Probably that helicopter tape Jace recommended.

I considered something like dynamat sound deadening but concern that the bituminous material could hold moisture.

I’ve used helicopter tape on my bike where the chain can potential hit the carbon fibre chain stays. Zero damage after 11 years and 100% water and oil resistant.
