Service info.
« on: 30 July 2008, 00:22 »
Tyre pressures:

Standard wheels 205/55/16: 30 PSI for the front, 28 PSI for the rear. (Its also in your fuel filler cap  )

If running 18" wheels using the 225/40/18 you should run the following to compensate for the lower profile tyre (according to the good year website.)  :

Full

Front   2.3 Bar = 33 PSI     Rear   2.6 Bar = 37 PSI

Partial

Front   2.1 Bar = 30 PSI      Rear   1.9 Bar = 27 PSI

Oil changes:
The cheapest place to get oil filters is from the dealers!! £5 (Believe it or not! ) Dont forget the sump plug which cost just £1

1.8T:

Removed - need to confirm details

The 1.8T will take 4.35 litres of engine oil.

Weak spot:
The 1.8T MUST use fully synthetic oil, and be changed at the correct service intervals, use of the wrong oil can cause the oil pick up to block up and the the oil pump to seize causing catastrophic loss of oil pressure and engine failure.

* NOTE * DO NOT USE Engine Flush!!

Read this : http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=181271.0

1.8T oil filter part no: 06A115561B  £5 +VAT

Sump Plug: N90813202 £1.08 + VAT

There has been a lot of differant oils recomended by some VW dealers read this topic:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=95412.0

I would strongly recommend a visit to your dealer to see which oil thay recommend for your 1.8T engine. (Give them your reg no and all your cars info will come up on the screen)

Some forum members use and recommend SYNTA GOLD 5W-40 fully synthetic which vw sell :
VW part no: AZGB 115 QLB 00 421 £24.36 +vat. This oil, oil filter ,sump plug comes to £35.79 all in from VW.

**EDIT**
Synta Gold - VW have replaced it with:

Quantum Platinum 5W-40 - £24.06/£27.67 for 5 litres
Part number - VZGB 115 QLB 00 551 036A

Spark Plugs.

Spark plugs are best brought from a local motor factor you can get the same plug as vw use but without the vw audi stamp for a lot less.

Or ECP http://www.eurocarparts.com/search/408440060/p/home

Do not trust ebay as there are a lot of fake goods at the moment including spark plugs, brake discs and pads. A few members form here have been conned with these.

http://www.diynexus.com/vw/mk4_18t_spark_plug_change/mk4_18t_spark_plug_change.html

Fuel Filter .
Petrol fuel filter all models 1J0 201 511 A - £8.05

The fuel filter sits under the car, drives side at the rear. canister type with quick release ends. (Petrol models only)

Cambelt Change

Cambelt intervals for the 1.8T are 40,000 miles or 4 years - which ever occurs first.

*Important*

Make sure you have a new water pump fitted at EVERY cambelt change as thay are prone to fail!

TDI:

TDI Oil fillter no:  A074 115 562 £4.80 + VAT
TDI Fuel filter:    1J0 127 401 A £20.50 + VAT
Air filter:            1J0 129 620   £11.30 + VAT
Sump plug:         AN 908 132 02 £1.08 + VAT

PD diesel oils:
For T&D PD spec oils, you need to be using a VW 505.01 oil.

For the LongLife PD oils, you need either VW 506.01 (which is LongLife II spec), or 507.00 (which is the very latest LongLife III spec, as used in Golf V GTI, B7 RS4, and any of the new diesels with the Diesel Particulate Filter)

Stick with any of the VW specified oils from the major manufacturers (Castrol, Shell, Elf, Motul, Fuchs), but avoid Mobil 1 (because they lie about their VW approval), Comma, Millers, and the other smaller manufacturers.

Cambelt intervals for the TDI are 60,000 miles or 4 years - which ever occurs soonest

Also Try this from castrol to find out what oil you should use:

Pollen Filter.

Should be changed every 20,000 miles normally, but can need replacing before, A sure sign is reduced airflow through the heating system .

Vw part no: 1J0819644A
Approx £15 from vw, can be found cheaper online tho.

To find your pollen filter:

Open bonnet and look to right hand side of scuttle tray by the right windscreen wiper. You should see 4 screws on a plastic tray undo and slide out.

Fog light bulbs:

The MK4 has just the ONE fog light the drivers side, although all the parts are there for both.

Rear tail light bulbs :

Choose the wattage rating carefully - R5w for low spec models - R10W for GTI's and all models with the dark tinted rear lights.

Aero wipers:

Part numbers for front Aero wipers - retro fit to existing arms £23 from VW

MK4 Golf 98>03 . 1J2 998 002

Don't you need a special tool for removing the oil filter?

You dont have to but it helps. In most cases you can undo it by hand tho
