mk2 front subframe removal
« on: 11 January 2011, 20:32 »
Just wondering does anyone have a step by step guide or something to removing the front subframe off a mk2? I am doing an engine conversion and rather then just remove the engine and box i want to remove it all at once as a 1.8t is going in with g60 brakes and all etc? Its a 1990 reg and im looking to drop the whole subframe out so i can bolt the other one in. Thanks for tips in advance :)

Its about 6 bolts - which are all fairly obvious to see.

Best buying a Haynes buddy.

Eye its 6 bolts, three at the far end of each side. Just remember it has two mounts attached to it, the gearbox and rear engine

edit, sorry i thought it said rear. The front is again three bolts, the middle one holds on your front bumper and the outer two hold on the subframe. So obv take out the middle bolt first on each side or you will end up with a bumper on your head. Make sure you jack the engine or the whole thing will simply tip forwards and squash your head

I would double support it If i were you, before removing my front bumper i have to check the other four bolts as when you are under the car you can just see the engine perched above your head

im gonna stick the engine crane around it tomorrow would that be enough to support it and a trolley jack? what about disconnecting the steering rack? is that just pull up the rubber sleeve and do the bolts?
