Title: Phone mount
Post by: Jim_mk7.5 on 29 November 2018, 13:55
I can confidently say that despite having had many a company car and driving thousands of miles over the last 19 years or so, I have never purchased a phone mount. A mate of mine must had bought every one ever offered at petrol stations - you know the ones, rattling about on the air vents etc and generally looking sh!te and a pain to use.

In the Golf, an iPhone does fit neatly on top of the drinks holders retractable cover but then it often gets in the way. And then theres the temptation to look down at it. I considered that d-dock thing as I use Apple Play quite often but that seems pricey for what it actually is.

A friend was using one of these in his Range Rover last week and was so impressed I ordered straight away. Was £8 at the weekend due to Black Friday still only £10

And it just so happens that it goes fantastically with the GTI red colour scheme

So far - Rock solid, doesn't make any noise over the bumps and easy to use. A very thin magnetic plate sits inside your case (or sticks to your phone if you don't have a case) so very simple but effective.

Got mine today and it's a great bit of kit.
Fits my GTI perfectly, but not so good in my wife's Evoque due to the air vents and dash sloping backwards at a stupid angle

Can somebody explain to me what the point of this is? Why would you not have it plugged in and hidden away in the cubby? I don't understand why you want your phone on display at all when you're driving, let alone when you have a big fat screen that runs carplay/android auto... What am I missing?

Not all of us have CarPlay/android auto or discovery/Pro Nav. Hence the need for a phone mount to use phone as Nav etc. do you understand now ???

Jim does! Hence my curiosity. Just seems like an excellent way to get distracted by messages to me.

You don't, it's just a quick and easy way to store your phone.
I usually put mine on the cup holder cover but then I can't use the cup holder!
It's just a cheap and easy solution and I like it

Just so you know, this is what is stated:

Using a phone or a sat nav when driving
It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle. You must have hands-free access, such as:

a bluetooth headset
voice command
a dashboard holder or mat
a windscreen mount
a built-in sat nav
The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead.

Not illegal to touch it!

I might buy another and get my ipad out
I won't be able to use my centre vents but it would be worth it.
