Title: Mk7 GTi (PP) Perfect Car?
Post by: Shandy77 on 27 November 2018, 17:26
What do you replace a loaded and stage 1 tuned Mk7 Golf GTi with? I have a feeling the Mk7 / 7.5 is about as good as a GTi can get.

Is it me or is anyone else luke warm about the Mk8, it will be another evolution and less powerful than a stage 1 tuned Mk7.

Dare I say I'm tempted by the Mercedes A35 (insert your own comments on "it's not a proper AMG") or perhaps even stepping up into a new shape S4 and not worry about the fuel bills.

What other car is as practical, as fast, as reasonable to insure and run as a Mk7 Golf GTi? Is it the perfect car? (caveat after changing out the Bridgestone tyres and stage 1 tuning and also maybe an exhaust)

It's a good car, it seems to cover the performance, practicality & cost considerations fairly well. Without being exceptional in any one area. A great all rounder?

I have had mine coming up to 3 years and I occasionally have ideas about replacing it, then I drive down the road and realise, I may as well keep it as the initial excitement with a new car fades after around 6 weeks anyway!

As you mention, you do need to get the car to your spec, PS4, Bosch wipers, OBD mods etc.....
Facing up to having to go through all of that on a new car, I may as well keep what I know.

It's not perfect but pretty close! I'm not ready to change mine yet but naturally I do think about it and I agree, what with? I find the boot a bit small and have considered an R estate, but I don't want one. I keep getting drawn in to look at 3 door CS, great car, very tempting but swmbo has vetoed any changes right now, even when I pointed out a 18 plate ex-demo GTI-P 3dr TR with Brescias for a reasonable £24k! Think I'll just keep enjoying the one I have for a bit longer

Might get a few funny looks with this but for me I massively regret letting my MK1 Fabia vRS go.

That was a brilliant car. Mega reliable, didn't have a single issue with it (unlike the Golf) in 8 years of ownership, fast enough for the roads (stage 1), 55mpg without even trying.

I always wanted a Golf GTi since I was a kid, my mates dad had a MK4 V6 and I was hooked. Wasn't a fan of the MK5, the MK6 has grown on me. But the MK7 for me is the best looking Golf they've done since the original (nothing will ever beat a MK1) so I had to get one.

I plan on keeping my GTi PP for a good few years, I eventually would like to go stage 1, possibly stage 2 but I'm not sure about changing the exhaust as I think the stock exhaust is perfect.

I'd like to go out in a stage 1/stage 2 car if anyone is local? York/Leeds/Harrogate or Barnsley/Sheffield.

You should definetly go stage one and get a pedal box. The difference is unreal.

I have tested all Hatchbacks that is sale now

And the GTI is the only one that checking all the boxes.

No one is near the practicallity and performance

I had a B8.5 S4 and the fuel economy was similar if not slightly better than my CS - certainly better on a long / m-way run, slightly worse on a short / rural / urban run. That said it was boring as sh*t and I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Fast, yes, engaging, no.

Much prefer the CS.

OK the PP package has the edge over my standard 230ps vanilla MK 7.5 GTI, but even that I find hard to fault - in fact all of the performance Golf's are all brilliant in my opinion. Recently went on a 460 miles round trip to Essex for a family funeral. There was 4 up in the GTI (myself and the wife and my brother and his wife). Lots of average speed cameras etc. resulted in a round trip true amazing MPG of 46.8 (not far off the 55 ish i'd have got out of the GTD), and my super critical brother even commented how comfortable and relaxing the ride was (DCC set to comfort mode).

Plenty of space for all 4 of us, and more than enough poke when needed. Oh, and the standard Sat Nav performed brilliantly and notified us of a major hold up on the M1, which it took us off and cross country for 30 mins and 2 junctions and back on. We then heard on the radio that it was an overturned truck and delays of over an hour expected.

Plus I think it looks fab and classy (especially on the 19" Brescia's) and has all the creature comforts one could need, including (in my example) the very relaxing DSG gearbox and of course the adaptive cruise which makes the long stretches of average speed cameras an absolute breeze and is totally de-stressing. Had my first opportunity since buying the car in May to use the adaptive LED headlights with high beam masking at night and have to say it was brilliant !

I've no plans to get rid of this for many years to come, and to be honest, wouldn't know what to replace it with anyway.

The GTI PP probably is the perfect car.

Just the right blend of styling, sportiness, class, heritage, quality, performance, ride, steering, handling, economy, general ownership costs, size, tractability...

A very very hard act to beat.

I’m five and a bit years into mk7 ownership and I’m still far from bored of that model. Normally I’d be chewing the steering wheel in boredom by now and yet the mk7 model in general has grown to become like an old friend now rather than “just another Golf range”

I can’t think of anything out there I’d rather have in the price bracket (and quite a bit above that) than a GTI or R.

The A35 comes in as an interesting alternative where the A45 fell short as too expensive and too peaky but I think it still lacks something. Worth checking out though.
An RS3 would be interesting but maybe just from a novelty point of view.

Watts, an R estate? Stay off the vino! It has five doors, lacks a proper gearbox and worst of all it’s not a real Golf!!

Ryan, I had a stage 1 mk1 Fabia vRS many years ago. Another great all rounder. Like the Golf GTI it benefits from a small amount of modifications to make it nigh on perfect but a great out of the box package, especially for the cost of it. Both cars punch well above their weight.

I know, I know, but it's a real struggle going away sometimes and I won't have stuff on the back seats (occasional passengers excepted). As I said, I don't want one, but it can be irritating trying to force stuff in....

I'd sooner buy a roof box than a Golf estate

I'm just going to have to cut back on the non-essentials for a week away then. So, one pair of pants, one pair of socks...

Very similar here in many respects...  Did have a PD130 Ibiza (@192bhp, no not on the standard turbo ), GTI PP, Yorkshire...

There used to be a lad who knocked about with us in our little car meets with a very quick Ibiza, wasn't you by any chance was it.

Sheffield/Killamarsh area. Once did a rolling road day in Chesterfield, had a few drives out towards Lincoln etc?

The golf GTI is a fantastic car but it left me a bit cold, almost like it had no character. I now have an Abarth 595 which is so much worse than the golf in so many ways but I love it much more.

I think that is a fair comment about the GTi, I also run more extreme and focussed cars and the Golf is my sensible, sometimes daily option.
If I was only running a GTi, I am not sure the sensible ownership proposition would outway the need for something with a bit more excitement.

With the above criteria, I am not sure what exactly is the "perfect" car?

I think James May summed it up... its a People's Car. Its a car that is suitable for most people and that's an accolade none of the others have ever managed to achieve and in that respect its a unique design achievement.

I've always said, its not amazing - amazing is some sort of million pound supercar with the highest racebreed tech. No, this is a car that is useful and with enough stuff to be fun if fun is what you want. Its not a one trick pony.
