That's gotta be wrong! Thats less than I pay for mine! granted it's a Mk3 VR6 and not a Mk2 GTI, but I'm 28 with 1 year's no claims.
-
I just got a quote on an 8v gti in the for sale section and it was £2700 third party fire & theft :(
-
is it just you on the policy or do you have your mum or dad on it as named drivers, this brings the cost down massivly for new drivers but can be dodgey if its in their name and not yours especially if the car is registered in your name. Watch you for this common error as it could get you in trouble if your in an accident.

Very true, insurers are now getting wise to this. Its called "fronting" where a parent fronts the risk to get the price down even though the young driver is the registered owner and main user. If your insurer believes this is the case in the event of a claim you could land up in trouble, its usually pretty obvoius (eg Mummy has a nice sensible mk5 dsl but then just happens to want to insure a modified mk2 which just happens to have her son on as a named driver but its her car and she will still be the main user etc......ok so yeah im sure there are the odd occasions where this is the case but its not very likely is it? )
With having parents as named drivers on your own policy i would alwasy suggest trying it with and without them as although it is true that it makes it cheaper with some companies, others also give a discount for "insured only" driving etc
Martin

Could never understand that - why does it go down loads with say your mam on as a named driver?

Your in the Channel islands yeah? Going off what my mate from Jersey pays for his insurance you can't even begin to compare it to the prices over here.
-
I got quoted...... £10000 not that long ago and im 21
-
how much
-
i know it doesn't get much better than that so i took them up on the offer
-
damn, i pay 4 figures but thats it!!!

lol 17 and paying £700 on a Mk2 GTi?
Your having a laugh right?
I was 18 when I passed me test and was paying £800 for a 93' 1.4 Clio. That just sounds plain wrong to me.
Im 20 now and dont get me started on what the money grabbing cvnts at the insurance comapny are getting from me for my MK4.
-

yea mines costing looads with 0 NCB

My insurers are Rossborough, who are just the Channel Islands branch of AXA I think. My parents aren't on the policy just me. I think it's because of the area being in risk zone A ie. the lowest risk place to live. Insurance is just generally cheap here, if a little inconsistent, my friend pays £1200 on a 1.4 MK4 golf which is in group 4!! I guess i'm lucky we moved from Manchester before I started driving!
-
i payed 1700 on a 1.4 renault 5 when i was 17....... but the channel islands, stuff that, i wil pay more for living mainland. too right
-
i'm paying £1200 on a mk3 1.4 M reg, fully comp without the rents..
My old M reg 1.8td escort was 1800 fully comp without the rents, so I added them on and it dropped down to £1300.
Admittedly I was obviously doing what the insurers hate - "fronting" - and it can null your insurance if they have reason to believe you're driving it more than your rents.. seems they'd do anything to get out of it..
-
Insurance take the umbrella away when it rains, they want money for nothing

Fronting is when you have your parents as the main driver and you as the second when in reality you are the main driver. If you have yourself as the main driver and stick your parents as a second driver so they can drive it if they want, you are doing nothing wrong.

thats the situation i'm in at the moment.. i have my own policy in my name, mum, dad and sister as named drivers, for legit reasons, and my insurance on my mk2 8v gti went from £2000 to £1200..im 19 with 1 years no-claims, 2 fault claims and 3 points, bargin if you ask me...Admiral all the way!
-
Young drivers should go lv insurance.. .for example I am quoted 1600 on a brand new civic type r on my 19th bday with 1 years no claims with me as main driver and my dad as named driver. Comprehensive ofc and no scams.
-
thas crazy, they must be loopy down at LV lol!
-
WOA i love you dave
LV quoted my £2082.64 fully comp wheras all my previous quotes have been nearer £2300 for third party fire and theft
sooo happy now

£2k for insurance, you lot must be nutters with money to burn, why not get a 1.0ltr for a couple of years and then get the big guns out when your 19, save some pennies so that after those couple of years you can get a real nice car and not some old underpowered Golf.
I had a 1.1 Pop plus MK2 fester when I was 17, then a 1.3 astra, then 1.0 uno, I was in my mid 20's before I started on stuff with decent CC's.
You kids gotta have it all now now now.

just corrected that  none of my mates has a 1.6 though so its a statement

Im 19years old with no no-claims (because my passat is insured in germany).
I heard good things about HIC so I thought i get a quote on the mk1 gti I just bought. And 3rd party fire+theft it is 594 quid for me. Is that good? or shall i try another company?

I'm paying just over 500 for a mk2 8v and i'm 20 with 2 years no claims and i'm in pretty much the best post-code you can get!

I was just about to say quinn, im 23 and Ive been quoted £1200 fully comp on a jap import MR2 turbo. no-one else would even touch me, I just have to find the actual MR2 now!
-
I cant believe all these people who are driving GTIs in their teens. I put down a deposit on my MK2 16v when i was 20 only find out that most insurance companies REFUSED ME COMPLETELY and would under no circumstances insure me on a "hot hatch" until i was 21. Luckily i was due to turn 21 in a few weeks time and it was just a case of taking the car home on the back of a truck and keeping it on the drive for a while. Tesco Insurance thanked me for all those years of insurance on my previous car by wanting £1200 from me for the GTI. I said f**k that and decided to shop around for a bit before settling with churchill who i am paying just over £600 for fully comp, not bad i thought.

well, I think i will go with HIC then.
Only problem is that I have to get the car back onto the road first and that probably wont be until march next year, but hey then Ill be 20 and insurance might go down a bit.
-
churchill are cr@p mate they dont let you have mods on your car or thats what it said on there blurb gumf etc etc, plus need proof of alarm systems, what a load of bollocks, guess thats why there cheap if cant add mods

It can often be due to how long you have been driving too, a lot of companies will be more worried about how long you have had your full driving licence as well as how old you are before they will insure you on a gti or similar.

I'm 18, and i've been driving my Mk2 1.6 Driver since i was 17. Paying £80 a month as a named driver :undecided:
I keep trying to get quotes for a 8v GTi and it's averaging around £2000 lol
When will i be old enough for a GTi?!

When you want to cough up that much for insurance unfortunatly

I have been in a similar situation to giorgio. I paid £1460 for my anni for a year, but got quoted about £40 more for a twin turbo supra! Thought they'd missed a '0' off the end!
It has to be said I am still surprised you got quoted that price on a GTi. With a years NCB, Quinn wouldnt insure me on any GTi (looked at a 306 GTi-6 & Anni).
My first car at 17 was a 1.1 Pug 106. This still set me back £1499 on my own policy with no NCB!
If thats the price you got though well done! Nice to hear someone has had something good come from an insurer for a change
