You thinking of getting this kit then? How much are we talking?

I just watched the installation video, apart from needing a rivet gun it looks pretty easy, the question is are the speakers any good and how much are they?
Title: Re: focal speaker mk6 upgrade kit info
Post by: Snoopy on 28 November 2012, 20:05
Q: Am i getting them?
A: No,  just thought it may interest others.  I will probably fit FocalBe or some HAT speakers(another forum I mod) + other bits after the other stuff more important in life is sorted. :undecided:

Q: How much are they?
A: Don't know but focals are not cheap. Think I read 279 euro

Q: Are they any good?
A: Focal make fantastic speakers some of the best in the world.

Question s would the standard head unit be powerful enough for any real sound improvement or would they need an amp?
Title: Re: focal speaker mk6 upgrade kit info
Post by: Snoopy on 28 November 2012, 20:24
Depends on your definition of improved sound quality.
The myth is you need power but anyone that's heard a sq competitors car like Andy Wehmeyers Volvo will understand that setup tune and high sensitivity speakers meen you don't need lots power for normal listening levels. But everyone will tell you otherwise as its the marketing myth drummed into everyone as gosbal truth.

Very cheap when compared to home hi-fi but then your not paying for a cabinet etc, got to be worth a go as the VW speakers are useless.

I have Dynaudio on my new ED35 and it has probably been said before but this is a vast improvement on the std set up and I would recommend this. Don't know what it would cost to retro fit but must be worth a look?

They normally do free.delivery for forums. I use to be a regular on there forum when talkaudio was there shops forum years ago. Think I was one of the top members at one point. I just got sick of answering the same things time and time again. I've delt with them a few times over the years and can recomend them.

BUMP

Been looking into upgrading the audio in my GTI whilst keeping things as 'stock' as possible (keep head unit, don't want amps + subs taking up space, etc) and been recommended these by a local car audio shop, supplied and fitted for £270.  From my limited research this sounds reasonable, although obviously it would be nice to hear them before I take the plunge but that won't happen.

They do sound as though they fit the bill as I'm only really after more clairty, a bit more volume with improved bass, so can anybody with 'hands (ears) on' experience sway me one way or the other?

This focal kit looks very interesting. As said before has anyone got these fitted/ heard them?

Edit : Found a few Aussie reviews hear. Most people seem to rate them:

Did you get them fitted today? Any feedback would be very welcome.

Post by: elephantjuice on 05 April 2014, 23:24
Yup, got them fitted today at In Car Emporium in Bradford.

I am by no means an audiophile but even to my untrained ears it's a big leap in audio quality from the stock speakers. Considering these are still only powered by the stock head unit it's impressive just how much further these speakers can be pushed.  Not just that but the clarity is far superior too, especially the deeper bass and richer mids.

I haven't spent enough time with them to fully appreciate them yet but so far I'd happily recommend to others if you're the kind of person looking for enhanced sound quality without sacrificing space and on a relatively modest budget.  As long as you're not expecing earth shattering bass and ear bleeding volume I suspect you'd be happy with the Focals.

Them guys are about a minutes drive from my house. Had a few dealing with them, usually pretty rude.

Hmm it's sounding promising so far. How well does the plastic on the tweeters match the original plastics around the rest of the cabin just out of interest? Could you maybe get some pics up of the install?

Most of them there are ok, its the Dad (tall black guy) who thinks he's king dick.

Try to charge me a tenner for crimping two rings on, laughed at him and walked out.

what was the total cost for speakers and fitting.?

I know the chap you mean, only had a very brief chat but came across as a decent guy.

It was £270 to supply and fit.  I saw the kit was going for around £250 on Amazon at the tiem so thought that was fairly reasonable.

Looks pretty smart imo.

Just realised I probably should've taken a 'wider' shot to compare against the rest of the cabin, will do this later.

Yeah a wider shot would be handy thanks. Looks pretty good in that one to me though

I have these fitted. Easy to diy, takes an hour or so. Sound is excellent, everything a bit clearer and with more punch. Probably don't need a sub as well but that would be the icing on the cake. Using with the standard RNS510, you need to crank it a bit but the focals handle that without any issues.

Not sure how useful these will be as I was struggling to get a good shot because it's so dark in the corner.  Hopefully enough to go on though:

Just a thought, would a well nut work in this instance esp as there is very little load? This would negate the need to buy the riv-nut tool.

Good shout that, my only concern would be, how to you stop it from turn when getting to the tightening point

When you start to tighten, the nut at the end of the rubber pulls up and sandwiches against the inside of the panel allowing it to be tightened properly (in a very similar manner that the riv-nut tool does with the rivet.

So, after what felt like an enternty waiting for a day without rain! I have finally fitted my Focal IFVW Golf 6!

After drilling out the old rivets I took the advice and went with using Rivnuts to install these with.
Makes it much easier to remove if I ever need to.

Also added alittle touch to the Grille.
